Mayor Bowser's DC 2050 plan to improve housing, jobs, and neighborhoods
Mayor Bowser and the DC Office of Planning launched DC 2050, a plan to reshape the city's growth for the first time since 2006.
The plan aims to guide housing, job creation, public spaces, and neighborhood connections by 2050.
Residents are encouraged to participate through surveys and public meetings starting March 22.
DC 2050 will focus on affordable housing, job opportunities, and inclusive growth across all eight wards.
WASHINGTON - What will D.C. look like in 2050?
Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Office of Planning are asking residents to weigh in as they embark on the city's first major Comprehensive Plan rewrite in almost 20 years.
The initiative will serve as a roadmap for shaping D.C.'s growth through 2050, focusing on housing, jobs, neighborhood connections, historic preservation, and public spaces.
Monday's announcement took place at The Strand in Deanwood, a historic Ward 7 landmark revitalized through the city's Food Access Fund.
The site, now home to a restaurant, also features 86 affordable housing units and new job opportunities, serving as a model for community-focused development.
"DC 2050 is our chance to lay out a vision for both current and future residents — one that ensures we have the affordable housing, good jobs, and world-class amenities needed to support a thriving city," Bowser said Monday. "This plan will help us build on our successes, address challenges, and create a roadmap for a strong and dynamic D.C., and we want residents to be involved in the process."
The two-year planning process will involve residents, businesses, community organizations, and elected officials.
Public meetings will begin later this month, allowing residents to share their vision of the city's future.
In the meantime, residents can participate in discussions and take the DC 2050 Vision Survey at DC2050.com.
D.C. is projected to have 845,000 residents and 1 million jobs by 2050, according to Anita Cozart, director of the D.C. Office of Planning.
Cozart emphasized the plan's goal of ensuring growth benefits all eight wards, particularly through affordable housing and job creation.
Public meetings for DC 2050 will be held on the following dates:
Saturday, March 22, 11 a.m. – MLK Library (901 G St. NW)
Tuesday, March 25, 6 p.m. – Barry Farm Recreation Center (1230 Sumner Rd. SE)
Thursday, March 27, 6 p.m. – Virtual Meeting

National Guard vehicle, car collide in DC
A National Guard vehicle collided with a civilian car early Wednesday morning approximately a mile away from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said in a statement that the crash occurred at the intersection of 8th Street SE and North Carolina Avenue SE. The civilian driver was trapped in the car, rescued and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, the statement said. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said officers responded to reports of the crash at 6:18 a.m. EDT and 'upon arrival officers discovered a two-car accident involving a government vehicle.' The driver was 'conscious and breathing' when taken to the hospital for 'non-life-threatening injuries,' MPD said. The military vehicle was a D.C. National Guard Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle and was part of a five-vehicle convoy and an MPD cruiser, the National Guard said in a statement reported by local news outlets. The National Guard is investigating the incident, the statement said. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) was asked about the incident at a press conference later Wednesday and said, 'I actually haven't gotten a readout on that collision yet, other than I know we had a person, I believe one person transported for medical attention. So I can't really say more,' NewsNation reported. The incident comes after President Trump ordered hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., in an effort to crack down on crime in the nation's capital. Several Republican governors have joined his effort, bringing the total number of troops in the city to nearly 2,000.

JD Vance and Pete Hegseth visit National Guard troops amid D.C. protests over Trump's crackdown
WASHINGTON — Bringing prominent White House support to the streets of Washington, Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday visited with National Guard troops at the city's main train station as protesters chanted 'free D.C.' — the latest tense interlude from President Trump's crackdown in the nation's capital. 'We brought some law and order back,' the vice president asserted. 'We appreciate everything you're doing,' Vance said as he presented burgers to the troops. Citing the protesters whose shouts echoed through the station, Vance said 'they appear to hate the idea that Americans can enjoy their communities.' The appearance, which also included White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, was a striking scene that illustrated the Republican administration's intense focus on the situation in Washington and its willingness to promote an initiative that has polarized the Democrat-led city. An estimated 1,900 troops are being deployed in D.C. More than half are coming from Republican-led states. Besides Union Station, they have mostly been spotted around downtown areas, including the National Mall and Metro stops. The intersection of life in the city and a military presence produced another striking scene early Wednesday when an armored vehicle collided with a civilian car less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol. One person was trapped inside the car after the accident and had to be extricated by emergency responders, according to D.C. fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo. The person was taken to a hospital because of minor injuries. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. A video posted online showed the aftermath of the collision, with a tan-colored armored vehicle twice the height of the civilian car with a crushed side. 'You come to our city and this is what you do? Seriously?' a woman yelled at the troops in the video. Atty. Gen. Pam Bondi said more than 550 people have been arrested so far, and the U.S. Marshals are offering $500 rewards for information leading to additional arrests. 'Together, we will make DC safe again!' Bondi wrote on social media. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, trying to balance the constituency that elected her and the reality in front of her, acknowledged the changing situation in the city as she attended a back-to-school event with teachers and staff. 'This is not the same time, is it, that we experienced in opening school last year,' she said. Bowser said she would worry about the politics and told school employees that 'your job is to love on the kids, teach them and make sure that they are prepared and to trust that I'm going to do the right thing for all of us.' Despite the militarized backdrop, Bowser said it's important that children 'have joy when they approach this school year.' Public schools around Washington reconvene Monday. The skewer-everyone cartoon TV show ' South Park,' which has leaned into near-real-time satire in recent years, this week made the federal crackdown fodder for a new episode. A 20-second promo released by Comedy Central depicts the character 'Towelie' — a walking towel — riding in a bus past the U.S. Supreme Court building and White House, where armed troops are patrolling. A tank rolls by in front of the White House. 'This seems like a perfect place for a towel,' the character says upon disembarking the bus. 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently signed a reported $1.5-billion, five-year deal with Paramount for new episodes and streaming rights to their series, which began its 27th season this summer. The season premiere mocked the president's body in a raunchy manner and depicted him sharing a bed with Satan. Whitehurst, Brown and Megerian write for the Associated Press. AP writers David Bauder and Michelle Price contributed to this report.
