NHAI starts process to cancel Bhuni toll agency contract, slaps ₹20 lakh penalty
In a statement, NHAI said it has imposed a penalty of Rs. 20 lakhs on the agency, M/s Dharam Singh, and initiated the process of terminating and debarring the toll collection firm from future participation in toll plaza bids.
'#NHAI strongly condemns such behaviour by the toll plaza staff and is committed to ensuring safe and seamless travel on National Highways,' the agency said.
The action against the agency, which was contracted to manage the toll plaza on the Meerut-Karnal section of NH-709A, comes after outrage over a video clip that showed the 26-year-old soldier, Kapil Singh of the Rajput Regiment, being tied to a pole, kicked, punched and attacked with sticks by a group of toll plaza employees.
Six staffers of the toll collecting agency have been arrested for the assault, said senior superintendent of police Vipin Tanda.
On Monday, angry villagers also vandalised the Bhuni toll plaza. 'Enraged by yesterday's attack on (an) army man, a group of villagers staged a protest at the toll plaza. The situation has been brought under control. Regular movement of traffic continues,' said Meerut superintendent of police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra.
Police said the attack on the jawan took place after he requested the toll plaza staff for a quick passage so that he could catch a flight to rejoin duty in Srinagar.

Patna man ‘abducts' minor relative to pay off unpaid loan
A 12‑year‑old boy was allegedly abducted by his cousin by marriage in Patna's Phulwarisharif Saturday to recover a loan of Rs 12 lakh, the police said. According to Patna City (West) SP Bhanu Pratap Singh, an FIR was lodged immediately at Phulwarisharif Police Station, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under SHO Ghulam Shahbaz Alam. Within six hours, the boy was found safe and the prime accused, Ramesh Ranjan, 43, was arrested. Police also recovered a car, a knife, two mobile phones, and Rs 6,420 in cash from him. 'There was minor assault by the accused during captivity, for which the child received medical attention. Behind the crime was the accused's intent to clear a substantial outstanding loan by seeking ransom,' SP Singh added. The boy allegedly told police that Ranjan called and lured him outside under the guise of visiting his maternal grandparents. 'After placing him in a car, Ranjan attempted to make the child unconscious using chloroform as they drove away,' the officer said. During interrogation, Ramesh Ranjan allegedly revealed that he had earlier taken a total loan of Rs 15 lakh for his beauty shop on Jagdeo Path and that he had 'engineered the abduction' to get the money to pay off the Rs 12 lakh that remained. The suspect 'had initially planned to abduct someone else', but after failing to do so, he resorted to kidnapping the child, the officer said.

Days after he sought action against online betting apps, AAP leader held for gambling
Days after he submitted a representation to the district police seeking action against online gaming and betting apps, the district youth president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Panchmahal of Gujarat was arrested, along with six others, by the Local Crime Branch on Monday in an alleged case of gambling. According to Panchmahal police, the AAP leader, Ashish Kamdar, and six others were arrested during a raid at a house in Vaijnath Society of Godhra, while gambling. Panchmahal district LCB said in a statement, 'After a tip-off from a local source, the house was raided and seven persons were caught red-handed while gambling… A cash of Rs 98,700 was recovered from the accused along with a sum of Rs 11,300 that had already been placed in the bet during the session… Three mobile phones and playing cards were also recovered.' The other accused have been identified as Jigar Shah, Dharmendra Gosai, Ashwin Goswami, Vijay Patel, Mahesh Patel and Vikram Vanzara — all residents of Godhra. After getting bail in the case, Kamdar on Monday took to Facebook and criticised his 'detractors' within the AAP for not standing by him in the 'false case' filed against him. Kamdar, in the video message, said, 'The truth will come out during the trial in the court… A handful people in the AAP in Panchmahal as well as the BJP have passed a judgment and tried to malign my image as if I have committed some heinous crime. This false case against me is a usual mechanism of the ruling party to suppress voices.' On August 14, Kamdar had submitted a representation to the district police, seeking immediate action against online gaming and mobile betting apps, stating that the apps were making youth victims of the 'greed of the mobile app owners'. Gujarat AAP chief spokesperson Karan Barot said, 'We have learnt about Kamdar's arrest on Monday evening. He is the Panchmahal District Youth President of the party… We are awaiting instructions from the party level on the further steps in the case.'
