Oman to host major green hydrogen summit in December
MUSCAT, APRIL 23
MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman will be hosting the fourth edition of the Green Hydrogen Summit Oman (GHSO 2025) during December 1–3, 2025. Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, and in strategic partnership with Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), the summit will be hosted by Birba Energy Services and will attract over 3,000 international delegates, including government officials, investors, and clean energy experts.
At a press conference here on Wednesday, to announce the summit, Dr Firas Ali al Abduwani, Director General of Renewable Energy and Hydrogen, described GHSO 2025 a milestone on Oman's journey toward a green hydrogen economy. "Hosting this summit is an affirmation of our country's objective of carbon neutrality," he said, referencing Oman's strategic advantages including vast land availability, port facilities, and international positioning.
Dr Al Abduwani also added his remarks on the importance of the conference saying, "As a Ministry, we view this conference as a cornerstone initiative and an essential tool in our efforts to establish a culture of green hydrogen. It is also an important platform to measure the market readiness to adopt and invest in green hydrogen technologies."
Dr Al Abduwani further added, "In the context of our net-zero ambition, this event is one of a series of flagship conferences hosted by the Ministry. They each have a different intention—some giving a general overview, while others, like today's, are specialist and specific. This specialist conference is all about green hydrogen, a reflection of the strategic importance we place on its development and future role in the energy policy of the nation."
The conference will be an opportunity to invest, innovate, and partner, supplementing Oman's hydrogen masterplan to provide solutions to energy security, diversification of the economy, reducing emissions, competitiveness, and developing local capacities. Eight projects are already awarded in Duqm and Dhofar.
Eng Abdulaziz al Shidhani, Managing Director of Hydrom Oman, stated, "The Green Hydrogen Summit has become a cornerstone event on the renewable energy calendar of Oman after being hosted in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Although the summit did not take place in 2024, the drive to propel Oman's green hydrogen strategy is intact.'
Over the years, the summit has seen a growing number of stakeholders from all over the world, including policymakers, technical experts, developers, investors, and market watchers. The conference is an important forum for exchange, knowledge sharing, and innovation advocacy across the entire green hydrogen value chain.
Eng Al Shidhani continued, "The officials emphasized Oman's determination to host the summit annually, regarding it as a valuable means of engaging with international stakeholders and promoting the country's experience and success and opportunities in the green hydrogen sector. The following summit will feature technology exhibitions, policy discussions, and business development forums."
'As a nation committed to a green future of energy, we believe that this summit enables us to share our vision with the world, hear our global partners, and collectively shape the future of green hydrogen," he concluded.
Supported strongly by both public and private stakeholders, the summit will consolidate Oman's reputation as a regional clean energy hub that helps drive its Vision 2040 and Net Zero by 2050.

Omani Mountain Destination project moves to design phase
MUSCAT: Plans for the establishment of a landmark mountain destination in Al Jabal Al Akhdar—one of Oman's highest summits—have advanced to the design stage. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has invited qualified international consultancy firms to bid for the master planning and detailed engineering design of the estimated RO 1.2 billion mega development. Known as the Al Jabal Al Aali project, or the Omani Mountain Destination, the development is envisioned as a mixed-use residential, hospitality, and wellness district spanning an 11.8 km² site atop Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliya Governorate. Part of a prestigious portfolio of sustainable cities promoted by the Ministry, Al Jabal Al Aali will feature more than 2,500 homes, 2,000 hotel rooms, a health and wellness hub, as well as biodiversity and sports facilities. Situated at an elevation of 2,400 metres above sea level, the destination promises cooler climes and breathtaking natural surroundings—rugged mountains, deep ravines, terraced farms, and endemic juniper trees. In addition to the overall master plan, the selected consultant will be responsible for the comprehensive infrastructure design, including planning, architecture, engineering, and tender preparation and award for major infrastructure and building components. A key highlight of the development is the Western Wellness Village, an integrated health and ecotourism cluster featuring approximately 500 residential and hotel units backed by RO 200 million in investments. Spanning 630,000 m², the village will underscore the project's appeal as a premier wellness destination. Designed to harmonize with the natural terrain, the new district will include paved walkways, open squares, green spaces, and water features. Mobility solutions will be enhanced by a proposed cable car system, while an extreme sports facility will cater to thrill-seekers with options such as mountain biking, bungee jumping, and rock climbing. Upon full buildout across multiple phases, Al Jabal Al Aali is expected to host a population of around 10,000 residents. The project forms part of Oman's broader urban development vision, which aims to attract billions of Omani rials in investment over the next decade across a suite of integrated tourism and residential projects. Alongside the flagship Sultan Haitham City in Al Khoud (Muscat Governorate), the portfolio includes Al Thuraya City in Bausher, a growing array of integrated neighbourhoods under the 'Souroh' brand, and other smart, sustainable urban developments. Oman a prime location for e-ammonia production: Yamna
MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman's potential to become a regional powerhouse in e-ammonia production has been reaffirmed by a top executive at Yamna, a clean energy investment firm collaborating with major international players to develop a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen project in Dhofar Governorate. Abdelaziz Yatribi, CEO of UK-based Yamna, stated in a recent interview that Oman's natural, infrastructural, geostrategic, and regulatory advantages make it an ideal destination for e-ammonia investment. 'Oman offers exceptional solar and wind resources, resulting in one of the lowest levelised costs of electricity (LCOE) – a critical factor in green hydrogen and ammonia production. Additionally, the Omani government's proactive approach, particularly through Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), provides a supportive framework for green hydrogen and its derivative projects,' Yatribi said in an interview featured in an in-house report of Eiffel Investment Group, a leading European third-party asset manager. Last year, Yamna, along with consortium partners EDF Group and J-POWER, was awarded a 341 km² land block in Dhofar Governorate to develop, build, own, and operate a large-scale green ammonia project with an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes. The project will integrate approximately 4.5 GW of renewable energy capacity and a 2.5 GW electrolyser, supplying hydrogen to an ammonia plant to be established in the Salalah Free Zone. Yamna's strategy, according to Yatribi, centres on producing the world's most cost-competitive green molecules – hydrogen and ammonia – in locations where renewable resources are both abundant and economical. 'Ammonia serves as an efficient carrier for hydrogen, facilitating its transport to global markets. It is a well-established commodity with over a century of production and transportation history, which significantly reduces technology and infrastructure risks. By leveraging existing ammonia infrastructure, we can accelerate the global deployment of green hydrogen solutions, particularly in markets with decarbonisation imperatives and limited domestic access to competitively priced green molecules,' he explained. Traditionally used in fertilizer production and industrial processes, the demand for e-ammonia is expected to grow substantially over the next 5 to 10 years, Yatribi noted. This growth will also be driven by its emerging role as a hydrogen carrier and low-carbon maritime fuel. In countries like Japan and South Korea, government-backed initiatives support the use of e-ammonia in power generation and industrial applications. Likewise, increasing interest in ammonia as a marine fuel is prompting the development of stringent safety protocols, supported by successful bunkering trials and forthcoming guidelines from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), he added. Yatribi also emphasised Yamna's commitment to delivering a global portfolio of export-oriented e-ammonia projects, currently planned in Brazil, India, Morocco, and Oman. 'We envision e-ammonia playing a central role in the global energy transition. Beyond replacing fossil-based ammonia in traditional uses, e-ammonia will serve as a key enabler for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including power generation and maritime shipping,' he said, adding: 'With continued technological innovation and supportive policies, we believe e-ammonia will become a cornerstone of a sustainable, low-carbon future.'

Dialogue session to boost SME involvement in energy, minerals
Muscat – The Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (ASMED) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals will host a dialogue session on June 15, under the theme 'Enhancing Opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises in the Energy and Minerals Sector'. The session is part of ASMED's ongoing efforts to empower small and medium enterprises and highlight emerging opportunities in strategic sectors. The energy and minerals sector, in particular, is seen as vital to Oman's long-term economic growth and diversification agenda. The event will bring together stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to explore ways to strengthen SME participation in the energy and minerals industries. Discussions will focus on unlocking investment opportunities, addressing key challenges, and formulating policies that foster an enabling business environment for entrepreneurs and SME owners. ASMED stated that the dialogue session will reflect the national direction to enhance SME contribution to the GDP and to create new opportunities for innovative ventures in line with Oman Vision 2040.
