Shoaib Akhtar rips into Pakistan batters, calls for mega changes in culture
'We used to have expressive and explosive talent, and we played like that. We were never dependent on one individual, everyone chipped in. No one used to look for escape routes. The environment has changed, and in the last 10–15 years, everyone has started playing for themselves. Everyone is playing for their averages. The intent should be to win matches for your country,' Akhtar said on the Game On Hai show.BIG CHANGE NEEDED: SHOAIB AKHTARPakistan have been heavily criticised for their outdated brand of cricket for a while now. Since reaching the semi-final and final of T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022, Pakistan cricket have been on a freefall. The team was knocked out of the group stages in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024, owing to their defensive style of play.Against India in the 2024 World Cup, the side failed to chase down a paltry total of 120 runs.'We need to change the intent, the mindset, and create that atmosphere. You need to play according to modern cricket. How hard is that to understand?' Akhtar blasted the Pakistan side.Though in the T20I series, Pakistan were able to edge out West Indies 2-1, it still does not hide their vulnerability while playing outside home. They toured Bangladesh and lost 1-2 in July. In March-April 2025, they went down against New Zealand 0-3, vindicating the team's obvious vulnerability on foreign soils.'Halka sa seam hota hai toh musibat pad jaati hai (The ball moves a bit and they are in trouble). Rawalpindi pitch lekar nahi ghoom sakte (You can't carry Pindi pitches everywhere),' said Akhtar. The upcoming matches will provide the side with a chance to respond to criticism and gain confidence ahead of the bigger challenge - the T20 World Cup in 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. A better and comparatively comprehensive show could ease some pressure on the players, at least for the time being.- EndsMust Watch

Jaiswal slightly ahead of Gill for spot in India's Asia Cup squad, says Chopra
New Delhi: Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Yashasvi Jaiswal has a slight edge over Shubman Gill in the race for a place in India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, citing the left-handed batter's game being suited more towards T20 game. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee are most likely to meet on August 19 to pick India's squad for the Asia Cup, to be held from September 9-28 in the UAE. Both Gill and Jaiswal last played a T20I more than a year ago, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson becoming the first-choice opening pair. 'It is important that you keep an opener with you because, while counting the previous 15-member squad, there was no third opener in the Indian team. We never thought that if Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson would lose their form, then who would open. But then, you have to keep a third opener for the World Cup.' 'As per T20 figures, Yashasvi is little ahead of Shubman. The way he plays T20 and the DNA of the team, he also marries that style. Sometimes it also happens that if you pick Shubman as the third opener, who is your Test captain, the ODI vice-captain, now you have him on the bench in T20Is, that will not look very nice.' 'So the selectors will be thinking that if we are going to select Shubman, then we will have to give him a place in the eleven. Though picking Shubman is tempting, but I feel Yashasvi should be slightly ahead in this race,' said Chopra on his YouTube channel on Saturday. It may not be easy for the selectors to leave out either Gill or Jaiswal, but accommodating them in the squad from the outside looks equally challenging. With a settled opening pair of Abhishek and Sanju, followed by Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya, India's batting line-up already looks formidable with proven performers. While there could be a possibility of including one of them, the question is at whose expense. 'But if that third opener is Shubman, do you want him to sit on the bench? If you don't make him sit and play in the eleven, who will he come in for? If that player's name is Sanju Samson, who will keep wickets?' 'That is the problem because we don't see Sanju Samson playing in the middle order. You would want him at the top of the order. Tilak and Surya will play at number three and four. So, Sanju at fifth? That won't be a good story. If you want someone at fifth, then you will have to think about Jitesh Sharma because he has done very well in the IPL,' added Chopra.

There's no rivalry between me and Hardik Pandya: Irfan Pathan
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has recently claimed that back in 2012, he had suggested Hardik Pandya's name to VVS Laxman to be selected for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, SRH could not get the Baroda all-rounder. Hardik would later be brought by the Mumbai Indians in 2015. The pace-bowling all-rounder went on to have immense success for the franchise, winning trophies, and when he moved to the Gujarat Titans, Hardik also managed to win a title as the leader. Clarifying the rumours on Pathan having with Hardik, Pathan said, the former on Lallantop said, 'There's no rivalry between me and Hardik Pandya. There's nothing as such. No player from Baroda who went to the top can say that Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan didn't support them at any specific time. Even VVS Laxman said that I regret that I didn't listen to Irfan in 2012. If I had listened, then Hardik would've played for SunRisers Hyderabad. Laxman said that.' Pathan, ahead of the 2024 World Cup questioned the selection of Hardik in the side. 'What I feel about Hardik Pandya is that Indian cricket needs to make it clear that they should not give him that much priority as they have given him so far, because we still haven't won the World Cup. And if you think you are a primary all-rounder, you need to make that kind of an impact at the international level.' 'As far as the all-rounder is concerned, he hasn't made that impact at the international level; we are only thinking about the potential. We are getting confused between the IPL performances and the international performances. That's a big difference,' he added. 'There is nothing wrong if you criticise a player. If you are playing cricket, you have to face it. It happened with Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. They never made any feel that they were above the game. I am against the derogatory words used against Hardik,' Pathan defended himself.

Shahid Afridi "Had Dog's Meat...": Irfan Pathan's Statement In Pakistan That Stunned All
Irfan Pathan 's emergence in Indian cricket topography was like a breath of fresh air. He could bowl lethal left-arm pace with a great ability to swing the ball and he was also an effective batter. Though he represented India in 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is, Pathan had a special rivalry with Pakistan. No one can forget his hat-trick in Karachi in 2006 or his Man of the Match performance in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup against Pakistan. But among the Pakistan players, Pathan had a rather bitter competition with Shahid Afridi. Pathan got the former Pakistan captain's wicket 11 times, but more than the sporting aspect, it was the off-field antics that riled up Irfan too. He narrated a rather intriguing incident on a flight during the 2006 Tour where he left an irritating Afridi stunned. "During the 2006 tour, we were flying from Karachi to Lahore. Both teams were travelling together. Afridi came and put his hand on my head and messed up my hair. He asked me, 'How are you kid?'" Pathan said on Lallantop. "I thought since when did you become my father. He behaved like a child. I was neither talking to him nor saying anything. After this Afridi said some bad things to me. His seat was near mine. Pathan then said something at Afridi's direction that completely shut him up. "Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq was sitting with me then. I asked him what kind of meat is available here. He told me meat of different animals are available. After this I asked whether dog meat is available. Razzaq was surprised to hear me and said, 'Hey Irfan why are you saying this?" Pathan said. "He (Afridi) has eaten dog meat, he has been barking for so long. After this Afridi could not say anything. If he said anything I would have said look he is barking more. After this he remained quiet for the entire flight. He understood from this incident that he would not be able to fight me verbally. That is why he never said anything to me again."
