iPhone 17 Cameras Will Get Boosted Video Skills. As a Creator, I'm Here for It
The iPhone 16 Pro is already capable of taking stunning still images while offering pro-level video production. But Bloomberg's Mark Gurman -- an Apple commentator with a reliable track record -- writes that for the iPhone 17 Pro line, Apple "will stress improvements to video recording" in a bid to "get the vlogging community away from stand alone cameras." As a YouTube creator, I'm intrigued.
Sadly, Gurman hasn't offered any details on what these video improvements might be. And to be fair to Apple, it's already leading the way with some of its production capabilities. The combination of ProRes recording and Log color profiles on the last couple of iPhone Pro models has made them not just great video cameras for everyday vloggers, but powerful enough to be the primary cameras for Hollywood films. Samsung clearly took note of Apple's video dominance in the creative space as it equipped the recent S25 Ultra with Log color, too.
Given the already top-end video skills of the iPhones, it's difficult to know exactly what Apple might do to make its devices even more appealing to content creators. I produce videos for CNET, but I also operate a YouTube channel and so I spend a lot of my time shooting video and vlogging on a variety of equipment from mirrorless cameras like my Canon R5 and BlackMagic Cinema Camera to more mobile options like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Yet I rarely use my iPhone 16 Pro as part of my production. So, why not?
In all honesty, there's no specific reason beyond that I feel I have my bases adequately covered by what's already available. When I want cinematic production quality, I use my main cameras. When I want a lightweight mobile setup for photowalk vlogging, I use my Osmo. So I'm left wondering what Apple would need to do to make me leave my Osmo at home and head out to shoot my YouTube videos using just my phone. I do have a couple of thoughts.
First, it needs to make the main camera app easier to use with Bluetooth microphones. While the iPhone's built-in microphones are decent enough in quiet environments, external mics can offer more professional sound quality with better wind resistance. They allow you to stand further away from your camera while capturing crystal clear sound.
While it's possible to pair the DJI Mic 2 with the iPhone, I've only been able to get it to work when using the BlackMagic Camera app, but not in the iPhone's default camera app. It's possible that Apple will try to push the AirPods Pro 2 as the better option for creators, but I don't like wearing headphones when vlogging, so this isn't a workaround I'd be happy with.
I also want to see Apple offer more editing options for its Log footage on the phone. Log video looks grey and low contrast by default as you typically take that footage into editing software like Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve and adjust the colors and contrast to suit -- a process called color grading. But that adds a lot of time and effort.
If Apple wants its high-level video skills to appeal to fast-paced YouTubers and social media creators, adding color presets (often called LUTs) to the iPhone's video editing workflow would be a welcome addition.
I'm definitely excited to see what Apple has in store for the iPhone 17's cameras. As someone who spends a lot of time producing videos, I'm keen to see whether its new updates will be enough to tempt me away from my own tried-and-tested setup.

Apple Announced New Measures To Protect Teens Online — Including Blurring Out Nudity
Parenting in today's digital landscape is an uphill battle, but tech companies making moves to help. Recently, Apple announced several new updates to help protect teens and younger kids online, including new communication settings, new ways to manage child accounts, and blurring nudity. On June 11, Apple revealed a slew of new measures to keep minors safe when using their devices. These will all be included in Apple's new software update for iPhones, the iOS 26 released sometimes this fall (and iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26 for other devices). More from SheKnows According to Pinterest's New Trend Report, This Is What Your Teen Is Into This Summer 'These new tools build on the parental controls already available in Screen Time and on the App Store, and are designed to help parents navigate the risks of an increasingly complex digital world,' Apple said in a statement. Apple has already had Child Accounts, which must be associated with a parent or guardian account in a Family Sharing group. These are required for children under 13 and can be used for teens up to 18. But if you've ever tried to set up a Child Account on a kid's phone or iPad, then you know how complicated the entire process is. With Apple's upcoming update, the company has streamlined the process and made it easier to set up the account and access the built-in parental controls it offers. When using apps, parents can decide to share their child's age range, which does not include the child's real birth date. This will help app developers provide age-appropriate content, while protecting the child's sensitive information. Teens specifically will get more protections from Apple's new update. Everyone aged 13 to 17 will automatically have age-appropriate protections enabled, even if their account was originally set up as a standard Apple Account and not a Child Account. These include Communication Limits, which gives parents the authority to manage when and who their kids can communicate with via Phone, FaceTime, Messages, and iCloud contacts. Teens and kids must send requests to their parents for approval when they want to communicate with new phone numbers. Once app developers update their technology, kids and teens will also have to send requests with parents to chat, follow, or friend users in third-party apps. This will allow parents to know who their kids are talking to and protect them from communicating with anyone they don't feel comfortable with. There are additional expanded features that'll help protect teens. For example, if parents have age restrictions on their child's phones, the App Store will remove apps that exceed age ratings limit, so they aren't in view. They can also grant an exception to download an app with a higher age rating with the Ask to Buy feature enabled, and they can revoke that permission at any time using Screen Time on iPhones and iPad. Additionally, the Communication Safety setting will intervene if it detects any nudity in FaceTime video calls. It will also blur our nudity in Shared Albums in photos. A Gen Z Harvard student even started an Appstinence movement to help people slowly break their addictions to their phones and shift to a completely smartphone-free life. Other parents allow their kids to have phones, but they still worry about what they are looking at. A March 2025 Common Sense Media Report found that by the times kids are 2 years old, 40 percent of them have their own tablet; by age 4, the percentage goes up to 58 percent. By age 8, nearly 1 in 4 children have their own cell phone. Most parents surveyed in the report (75 to 80 percent) were concerned about screen media, excessive use, potential effects on mental health, and how much inappropriate content their child could stumble upon. New York Requiring Companies to Reveal If AI Caused Layoffs
It's the first official statewide move towards understanding AI's effect on the labor market. New York is taking an unprecedented step by asking companies to disclose whether artificial intelligence is the reason for their layoffs. The move applies to New York State's existing Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system and took effect in March, Bloomberg reported. New York is the first state in the U.S. to add the disclosure, which could help regulators understand AI's effects on the labor market. The change takes the form of a checkbox added to a form employers fill out at least 90 days before a mass layoff or plant closure through the WARN system. Companies have to select whether "technological innovation or automation" is a reason for job cuts. If they choose that option, they are directed to a second menu where they are asked to name the specific technology responsible for layoffs, like AI or robots. At the time of writing, no companies filing WARN notices in the state have said the layoffs were due to AI. So far, no other states have followed New York's lead in adding the AI disclosure to their WARN notices, but some experts suggest "it signals growing concern among regulators," one CEO told Bloomberg. Last month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted that AI would wipe out half of all entry-level, white-collar jobs within the next five years and cause unemployment to rise 20%. In March, Amodei said that AI would take over all coding for software engineers within a year. Meanwhile, Victor Lazarte, general partner at venture capital firm Benchmark, said in April that AI was "fully replacing people" in professions like law and recruitment. He predicted that AI would automate routine tasks and take over entry-level jobs.
