LIV Golf Dallas presented by Aramco is the final tournament prior to determining which LIV Golf player will earn an exemption into next month's Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
In February, The R&A announced its new qualification category, utilizing LIV Golf's season-long Individual Championship standings. The highest-ranked player, not otherwise exempt, inside the top five of the standings after Dallas will receive a spot in the final major of the 2025 golf season.
The top three players in the standings entering Dallas are already exempt — Joaquin Niemann, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm.
No. 4 in the standings is Fireballs GC Sergio Garcia, who is not exempt and will tee off hoping to maintain his status in the standings. Garcia, a two-time LIV Golf winner including victory earlier this year in Hong Kong, is looking to make his 26th start in The Open and 102nd start in a major in his legendary career. Garcia has 10 top-10 finishes in the Open, including runner-up results in 2007 and 2014.
Less than seven points behind Garcia in the standings is Ripper GC's Lucas Herbert in fifth place. Herbert has made four Open starts, including a tie for 15th in 2022. He was instrumental last year at Maridoe in helping Ripper win the Team Championship.
Also within 10 points of Garcia is Torque's Sebastián Muñoz, whose last appearance at the Open was in 2022. Munoz has been one of the league's most consistent players this season, with top-20 finishes in six of eight tournaments. A year ago at Maridoe, he led all players in scoring in the final round, shooting a 64 on a course that he's very familiar with.
With 40 points given to a LIV Golf individual winner, a total of 10 players currently without an exemption remain mathematically eligible to overtake Garcia in the standings — Herbert, Muñoz, Dean Burmester, David Puig, Charl Schwartzel, Anirban Lahiri, Adrian Meronk, Thomas Pieters, Talor Gooch and Abraham Ancer. Beyond the Leaderboard: LIV Golf opens doors for next generation
LIV Golf is taking its global tour to the South, bringing back big names and team competition. However, this weekend in Dallas, the focus is about more than the game itself. While big names like Bryson DeChambeau may grab headlines, the league tells FOX they're just as invested in who's getting a chance to belong in the sport. Through LIV Golf's Potential, Unleashed, students stretched out across the DFW area took part in a day of inspiration and fun through the league's working partnerships with local school districts and charities. The idea behind it all? To increase opportunities for education, employment and training young athletes in the game of golf. "It's allowing them to bring diversity to the game, to teach the game to communities that may not have had the opportunity to do that… But also to show the world that it's not just about a sport and somebody being a winner…but there are a lot of life lessons to be involved when you're playing golf or learning something new," explained Tracey Hardwick, Executive Director of Together We Thrive. On Wednesday, the kids also took part in golf lessons from the pros themselves — opening doors to the leaderboard. "I think trying to break some of those barriers and get golf to… everyone is really important… Not only for the growth of the game, but for…this community here to have a sport, that they can go play and learn," said Cameron Tringale, a LIV Golf player with HyFlyers GC. However, when it comes to the tournament, LIV Golf and FOX Sports Broadcaster Jerry Foltz says the energy is different. "It's easy to say this is not your grandfather's golf tournament … There's world-class golf at the highest level … But there's a relaxed atmosphere for the fans who are here," Foltz said. That culture all shows up in the merch – specially catered to match the location of each individual tournament, while highlighting the unique layers to team play. "You know it's a team following, but it also has a player following, and it's a design following," said Senior Retail Operations Manager with LIV Golf, Andre Williams. But it's not just about what fans wear, it's who they're here to see, and the people who keep the game sharp – like Ben Giunta, otherwise known as the club doctor. A degree or two off? Giunta makes it right and is ready for the game. "A player comes in with some uncertainty. They walk out with a little bit more confidence in what they're actually using so they can go out and perform," Giunta explained.

Aussie Hensby goes on birdie-blitz in US Senior Open
Mark Hensby and Padraig Harrington have both gone on a birdie-blitz to share the first-round lead at the US Senior Open. The Australian made seven birdies while Harrington made four on their way to three-under-par 67s at the Bradmoor on Thursday. Both had contrasting rounds. Hensby spent the entire morning in the lead, though after he signed his scorecard he hardly looked like a player winning a senior golfing major. "Obviously, I felt like I lost some out there," he said. "It's just frustrating. I played like (expletive) the back nine. What else can you say?" Hensby finished with a pair of bogeys, each coming after drives that missed the fairway and landed in rough that is thick, but not Oakmont thick, and not the biggest problem at this course nestled at the base of Cheyenne Mountain. "There's so much slope, and it all comes off the mountain - most of the time," Hensby said. "Sometimes it doesn't. But the greens were softer today, so it kind of made it a little bit easier, and probably not as fast as they can get." Harrington, the 2022 US Senior champion, made all four birdies on the (easier) front nine and was leading by one when he snapped his tee shot on the par-4 15th deep into the woods. The Irishman took a cart back to the tee box for his third shot, then hit that into the right rough. His approach to 20 feet and the ensuing make limited the damage and he made three pars on the way in to stay atop the leaderboard. The leaders are one ahead of a group of six, including Stewart Cink, who hit the first 17 greens before making bogey after coming up short on No.18. It was, indeed, a calm, partly cloudy day less than 36 hours removed from a massive thunderstorm that soaked and softened the course. Even so, only 17 players finished under par with a few in the 156-man field still on the course as dusk approached. But Hensby, who shot 63 in the second round of last year's US Open at Newport Country Club was more focused on the back nine. "I've never been a very consistent player," he said. "I'm hot or cold, and that kind of sucks. Certain shots I keep hitting during rounds, it just (ticks) me off, so to speak. So yeah, the back nine was just kind of a bit of that." Fellow Australians Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling finished even par, with Stuart Appleby, Richard Green, Steve Allan and Scott Hend a shot further back.
