Shanku's biryani wish sparks nutrition policy overhaul in Kerala's Anganwadis
In a move blending policy with empathy, the state has unveiled a revamped model food menu for anganwadis, adding popular dishes like egg biryani and pulao without compromising on nutrition. The new menu is crafted to be both tasty and health-conscious, with reduced sugar and salt and an emphasis on energy-boosting, protein-rich items essential for growing children.
Veena George officially launched the new menu during the state-level inauguration of the Anganwadi Pravesanotsavam in Pathanamthitta. The initiative marks the first unified food plan to be implemented in anganwadis across the state.
Following the viral video, the minister had promised to review the food menu, leading to consultations at various levels. The nutritious meal plan also features enhanced servings of milk and eggs, now offered three days a week instead of two.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up breastfeeding centres in various public places, including railway stations and bus stands, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said here on Wednesday. "We will open dedicated centres for breastfeeding in public places. In the railway stations, a lady attendant will be deployed at the breastfeeding centre so that lactating mothers can breastfeed their babies in a women-friendly atmosphere," Parida told media persons after gracing the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 here. The DyCM, who is in charge of Women and Child Development Department , said there is an emotional and physical bond between mother and child. Breastfeeding brings the child closer to the mother's heart, she said. She stressed the significant health benefits of breastfeeding, both for mothers and infants, including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers in women and improved mental well-being for both during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding. Parida called upon all stakeholders to increase the rate of breastfeeding centres across Odisha and encouraged collective societal responsibility in promoting breastfeeding. She virtually inaugurated the first public breastfeeding room at the office of the Odisha State Commission for Women. The deputy chief minister recommended that similar breastfeeding spaces should be established in all public and private institutions across the state to support working and lactating mothers. Rs 40 for cows, Rs 12 for children: Madhya Pradesh's nutrition budget under fire
The Madhya Pradesh government's spending on nutrition for malnourished children has come under fire from the Opposition, after official figures tabled in the state assembly revealed that only Rs 8 and Rs 12 per day are being allocated for malnourished and severely malnourished children, response to a question raised by Congress MLA Vikrant Bhuria, the Women and Child Development Department disclosed the daily allowance figures in the assembly. The Congress party has slammed the budget as inadequate and questioned how malnutrition could be eradicated with such low to government data, 1.36 lakh children across the state are currently malnourished. Of these, 29,830 are classified as severely malnourished and 1.06 lakh as moderately malnourished. The state's malnutrition rate stands at 7.79 per cent, significantly above the national average of 5.40 per cent. 'The government is spending Rs 8 to Rs 12 per day on malnourished children, but Rs 40 has been allocated for cow feed per day,' Bhuria said in the assembly. 'Milk costs Rs 70 per litre, and officials spend thousands on snacks and dry fruits in a single meeting, but only Rs 12 is available to feed children whose skin is stuck to their bones.'The situation in tribal-dominated districts such as Sheopur, Dhar, Khargone, Barwani, Chhindwara, and Balaghat is particularly alarming. In several districts, reports suggest that one in every four children is severely Kartik from Sheopur, brought by his grandmother to a Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC), is among those severely affected. His frail condition, with bones visible beneath the skin, highlights the gravity of the crisis. Similarly, six-month-old twins Gaurav and Saurav from Bhikhapur village have also been admitted to an NRC due to severe the shortfall, Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Development Minister Nirmala Bhuria admitted that the current provision is inadequate.
