
Carrefour to sell Italy business, reports improving sales growth
The sale of Carrefour Italy, which operates 1,188 stores but made a 67 million euro ($78.85 million) operating loss last year, will help boost Carrefour's growth, profitability and cash generation, the French-based retailer said in a statement.
The deal gives Carrefour Italy an enterprise value of around 1 billion euros, Italy-based NewPrinces Group said in a separate statement, and should close by the end of the third quarter subject to regulatory approval.
Carrefour also reported stronger second-quarter sales as price cuts helped to attract more inflation-weary shoppers particularly in France, its biggest market.
Overall, Carrefour's second-quarter sales grew 4.4% on a like-for-like basis from a year earlier, building on 2.9% growth in the first quarter. In France, like-for-like sales returned to growth for the first time since 2023, up 2.1% compared to a year ago.
"Volumes declined at a historic rate after the wave of hyperinflation in 2022 and 2023, but we are seeing a gradual recovery in purchasing power, which is evidenced by volumes increasing [in the second quarter]," Chief Financial Officer Matthieu Malige told journalists on a call.
Carrefour plans to keep lowering prices in the second half as it tries to keep improving its competitive position, Malige added.
The group's first-half sales totalled 46.559 billion euros, up from 44.863 billion euros a year earlier.
"Carrefour's business saw a clear acceleration in the first half of 2025, driven by the momentum in its three core countries: France, Spain, and Brazil," Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard said in a statement.
However, Carrefour's profitability remained under pressure, with its first-half operating margin falling to 1.6% from 1.8% a year ago.

Powys student's Aries sculpture made from farm machinery
A SCULPTURE of a ram's head – made from steel rods, recycled from old farm machinery by a young Powys arts student – has been unveiled to mark the 180th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural University (RAU). Seventeen-year-old Harlan Beales, who is currently studying for an extended diploma in art, design and creative practice at Hereford College of Arts, designed the sculpture, which has been named 'Aries', in tandem with former RAU student Will Carr, before fabricating it by himself. Aries was recently unveiled by RAU vice chancellor, professor Peter McCaffery, at a special lunch held at the Cirencester-based University which was founded in 1845 as the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world. Harlan, from Hay-on-Wye, said: 'It has been amazing for me to have been involved with this. 'I've made smaller pieces before but this is the first large scale sculpture I've made. 'I'm excited that it will be at the RAU forever. My aunt lives in Cirencester so I can visit the sculpture whenever I come to see her.' He added: 'Will and I worked together on the design; he was able to make 3D projections and I made two paper models to get the scale right. 'I used Will's workshop, getting guidance from Will and his fabricator at key points during the build. 'It is made from 6mm steel rods which Will had on his farm. Our initial plan was to make it using old bits of farm machinery and plough parts, but it looked so beautiful when we'd just welded the rods that we decided to leave it as it was.' Will, who previously studied civil and environmental engineering at Nottingham University, joined the RAU in 2015 to study agriculture, before taking on his family's 200-hectare mixed, arable and beef farm in the village of Weobley, near Hereford. Alongside running the farm, Will has made a successful sculpture business, employing two people, and has sold sculptures across the world, including to the United States and Australia, and public sculptures across the UK. In 2015 he made a barley ears sculpture for the RAU's 170th anniversary which now stands overlooking the university's Bathurst Lawn. He said: 'I felt very honoured to be asked to make another piece for the RAU and it was great to be able to work alongside Harlan; we worked really well as a team. 'The joined metal bars of Aries symbolise the interconnected mesh of human brains coming together, very (much) like at this university, where information is shared making a joint neural network.' RAU vice-chancellor Mr McCaffery said: 'As we celebrate our 180th anniversary we ae immensely proud of the contribution our 17,000+ alumni have made as leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators to agriculture and the land-based sector. 'The Aries sculpture is a fitting tribute to the creativity, ingenuity and commitment to sustainability that characterises our students today.' Originally established in 1845 as the Royal Agricultural College, the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world and with just 25 students, the RAU gained university status in 2013. The university now has around 1,100 students at its Cirencester campus as well as more than 3,000 studying worldwide with its many international partners.

Belgian GP star who raced against Michael Schumacher quit F1 to become aircraft dealer
Thierry Boutsen competed in Formula One for a decade, racing against some of the greatest ever drivers in the sport, but has since made a fortune away from the track Thierry Boutsen once raced alongside Formula One icons, but he is now a multimillionaire aircraft seller. The Belgian competed in F1 between 1983 and 1993, sharing the track in his final years with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Ayrton Senna and Martin Brundle. He raced for teams such as Arrows, Benetton, Williams, Ligier and Jordan across 164 Grands Prix. Boutsen claimed 15 podium finishes and even beat the legendary Senna on his way to achieving three race wins. Now, aged 68, Boutsen's post-racing career as a businessman in the aviation industry has proven even more successful. Over the past 25 years, the Monaco-based former racer has amassed a fortune selling business jets. In a 2020 interview with Monaco Life, Boutsen explained how his passion for aviation began: 'I honestly had no idea that private jets existed until I was 18-years-old. 'A family friend was CEO at Abelag (a private jet operator) in Brussels and he invited me to work there as a mechanic in the aircraft maintenance department. I enjoyed every minute of it – discovering these extraordinary flying machines. 'I was even invited on board to do a post maintenance test flight. That is when I promised myself, should I one day have earned enough money, I would buy and fly my own plane. I had to wait 12 years for that. Since then, flying has been a passion, like driving race cars.' He went on to say: 'I had no intention of starting a company in the beginning. I was always flying my own plane from racing event to racing event, or marketing event to marketing event, for private or business purposes. 'Then I had a request in 1997 from a colleague of mine, former F1 driver Heinz Harald Frentzen, who wanted to buy the same plane I was using at the time but he didn't know how to get it or how to complete the paper work etc. So, I said I would do it for him, and he ended up being my first customer. 'Immediately afterwards, I had a request from Keke Rosberg to buy a similar airplane for him; then I had to buy one for Mika Hakkinen, and then Michael Schumacher came to me and said he wanted to sell his Challenger. I did about 10 transactions, just in the racing world. I was doing the job as if it was for me – with a lot of passion, dedication and attention to detail. People loved it. 'So, we decided to go further and explore Europe. My wife Daniela and I started Boutsen Aviation: she was in charge of the marketing and presentation and I was in charge of the commercial side. 'At the end of 2000 we had our first employee, Dominique Trinquet – who is still with us today and is now president of the company. We have nine people working with us here in Monaco, and we have representatives in India, Russia, northern Europe, eastern Europe and Switzerland.' Reflecting on his business achievements, he added: "We have sold 385 planes to date, and every time we make a sale, we celebrate it as a success for the whole team. Our team in aviation is like a racing team – everyone is working together to get the job done and using their capabilities to 100 per cent, or sometimes even more. It will be a very important milestone when we get to 400, but it is due to the hard work of everybody of the company." 'We have 16 planes for sale on an exclusive basis. We sell all types of business jets, but 70 to 80 per cent of our planes are transatlantic, like Challengers, Gulfstreams, Falcons… big planes that can travel from Nice to Los Angeles, for instance. We also sell biz-liners like the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) and Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ). 'These planes used to sell for between 20 and 35 million. Today, it's between 15 and 25 million for exactly the same airplane. This is because the inventory has increased. 'During lockdown, some people wanted to get rid of their planes because they had no need for them. A plane is expensive to buy and maintain, so if you have one that just sits in a hangar for six months, it's not worth it.' He also runs three other businesses: Boutsen Design, providing decoration services for business jets, superyachts and residences; Boutsen Classic Cars, which sources and sells premium classic road and race cars; and Boutsen Racing Team, which competes all over the world.
