Liverpool transfer collapsed after medical and it left £60m target left stunned
Jurgen Klopp pinpointed Nabil Fekir as a key target for Liverpool in 2018 and despite the Frenchman having agreed to the move, it sensationally collapsed as the midfielder told his side of the story
Nabil Fekir admitted he was baffled as to why his transfer to Liverpool collapsed. The Frenchman was a key target for Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2018 and was looked at by fans as the replacement of Philippe Coutinho who had left for Barcelona earlier that year in January.
With a reported fee of £58.5million having been agreed with Olympique Lyon for Fekir 's services, the attacking midfielder underwent a medical and had agreed personal terms with the Premier League giants.
But in a surprising twist, his impending move to Anfield collapsed with reports suggesting that it was a knee issue during Fekir's medical that caused the transfer to break down.
He had missed a majority of the 2015/16 season after rupturing his right ACL during international duty before suffering two further knee injuries during his time in France.
The 31-year-old ended up staying one more season with his boyhood club before leaving the next summer to La Liga side Real Betis for a signficantly lower price of £18m.
Fekir - who earned 25 France caps between 2015 and 2020 - spoke out on his failed move to the Reds in 2019 as he dispelled rumours that it was the cause of knee that ended his dreams of playing for Liverpool.
"The truth, why the transfer to Liverpool did not work out, I don't even know it myself," Fekir said to French sports paper L'Équipe.
"I passed my medical and after that, they decided not to sign me after all. What was said is not the truth," he insisted.
"My knee is good - I had a quick medical check at Clairefontaine - my knee wasn't even mentioned. But the worst thing is the idea that people could suggest that it's because of my family that the transfer didn't happen.
"It's a lie. But you have to live with it. The attempt to spread this pseudo physical problem into the world of course had an influence on other clubs potentially interested as well."
Following the failed move, Fekir - who joined Al Jazira last year - had cut ties with his agent Jean-Pierre Bernes who claimed that it was the midfielder's knee issues that was the problem.
Fekir would have joined Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri at Liverpool who went on to win the Champions League in their first season in Merseyside.
An attacking midfielder has once again become a key target for the English champions who are closing in on securing Florian Wirtz. They've agreed a deal worth £116m, including add-ons, with Bayer Leverkusen to sign the German superstar.

Milos Kerkez contract details and likely shirt number as Liverpool finalise deal
Milos Kerkez is set to join Liverpool in the coming days after the Reds reached a breakthrough in their talks with Bournemouth, with the Hungary international in line for a bumper contract Milos Kerkez is edging towards a £45million move to Liverpool as the Reds' busy summer window continues. They have already signed Jeremie Frimpong and are closing in on his former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Florian Writz. Frimpong arrives to help replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has joined Real Madrid. But boss Arne Slot has also been keen to add a left-back to his squad this summer to provide better competition for Andy Robertson. Though he has played a key role in two Premier League title wins and the 2019 Champions League win, Robertson's performances have suffered a downturn. His back-up is currently Kostas Tsimikas. But the Greek international has never really convinced that he can be a long-term option. Instead, the Reds are now set to close a deal for Kerkez, who has impressed at Bournemouth. Whether Kerkez comes in as competition for Robertson or to directly replace him remains to be seen, with the Scotland captain the subject of increasing interest from Atletico Madrid. It appears Liverpool certainly see Kerkez as being a long-term player, with iNews reporting he will be handed a five-year contract. The 21-year-old can also expect a major pay bump by joining the champions. Kerkez has made it clear that Liverpool is his preferred destination. Talks have been ongoing for three weeks, with Reds sporting director Richard Hughes taking the lead in the negotiations. Bournemouth have stood firm on their valuation and there is said to be 'growing optimism' a deal will be agreed in the coming days. Liverpool are set to pay £45m to get hold of Kerkez, with the Cherries having already signed a replacement in Adrien Truffert. One matter that does remain to be settled is the shirt number Kerkez will take on at Anfield. The Hungary international currently wears No.3 at Bournemouth, though that is occupied by Wataru Endo at Liverpool. Endo has struggled for game time since Klopp arrived though and could well depart this summer. If he leaves or even moves over to the unoccupied No.6 shirt, then Kerkez could take hold of the No.3 jersey. For his part, Robertson has insisted he is ready to face the challenge Kerkez will bring. He told BBC Scotland earlier this month: "We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. "I back myself, I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward. I've had eight fantastic years at Liverpool in terms of winning trophies, being a mainstay in the team, which I'm incredibly proud of. I'm not getting any younger, I can't change my age. "But I still believe I've got a lot to give and that's what I focus on. I focus on myself - you can't focus on other people or who you're competing with. I still believe I have a hell of a lot to give for however many years I can keep going. My body feels good at the minute."

Fulham also expressed interest in signing Walker but it is claimed Everton have won the race and are now in talks with Man City to discuss whether it will be a permanent move or a 12-month loan. Walker made over 300 appearances for Manchester City following his £50m move from Tottenham in 2017. He has been England's first-choice right-back for around a decade, amassing 96 caps for the Three Lions. More Trending New England boss Thomas Tuchel has continued to show faith in Walker since his appointment but the ex-Spurs star struggled during the recent friendly defeat to Senegal. Kyle Walker 'agrees move to SHOCK Premier League side' bringing an end to 35-year-old's glittering Man City career after eight years
Kyle Walker is thought to have agreed a shock move to Premier League rival, calling time on his eight-year stint at Manchester City, according to reports. The former captain is one of the club's most decorated players, having won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League with the side, among other club and individual honours. But Walker has been on loan at AC Milan since leaving the Etihad in the January window, after admitting that the thought that his career at the club was over made him 'want to cry'. While in Serie A, the defender made just 11 appearances in club colours, but surprisingly won back his play in the England side under new manager Thomas Tuchel. AC Milan are believed to have mulled a permanent move for the 35-year-old, but ultimately declined. However, as per the Sun, Walker is set to stay in the English top-flight after reportedly signing a one-year deal. The England international is thought to be gearing up for a move to Everton, with Man City and the Toffees locked in talks over either a permanent deal or a 12-month loan. Another Premier League side - Fulham - are also thought to have enquired about the availability of the star, but were ultimately unable to afford to secure his services.
