Luca Brecel pulls out of British Open in bizarre start to his snooker season

Metro6 hours ago

Luca Brecel has pulled out of British Open qualifying on the day he was due to play after failing to show up for his Wuhan Open qualifier on Sunday.
The 30-year-old gave no warning on Sunday ahead of his scheduled contest with Haris Tahir, with his opponent eventually being handed a 5-0 win.
On Wednesday he was due to be in Leicester again for British Open qualifying against Alexander Ursenbacher, but pulled out on the day, allowing amateur player Ashley Carty to take his place in the draw.
A brief statement from World Snooker Tour on Wednesday afternoon read: 'Luca Brecel has withdrawn from this week's British Open qualifiers and been replaced in the draw by Ashley Carty.
'Brecel was due to face Alexander Ursenbacher on Wednesday afternoon but has decided to pull out. Carty is the highest available player from the Q School top-up list.'
Whether he will be punished by the snooker hierarchy is yet to be confirmed, but he does face the possibility of a fine unless he gives an appropriate reason for his absence.
Brecel has not given a reason for not playing in the two events at the Mattioli Arena, he has been busy on social media, seemingly enjoying himself.
On Sunday, when he was due to play Tahir, he posted picture on Instagram with his reported new girlfriend Shawney Demuyter and another of pizzas with two glasses of wine.
By Tuesday the Bullet was posting pictures wearing a bizarre mask and an eye-catching hat.
Wednesday saw the former world champ sporting a wig, shortly before he was due to be playing Ursenbacher.
The Belgian Bullet finished last season off impressively as he looked great on a run to the quarter-finals of the World Championship, where he was beaten by Judd Trump in an excellent contest.
They were encouraging signs for the man who had won the 2023 World Championship but had a very quiet time after that, skipping a number of tournaments and struggling for results in the ones he played in.
He has slipped down to number 39 in the world rankings and failing to play in either the Wuhan Open or British Open puts him at risk of falling further down in the rankings in the weeks to come.
His next scheduled matches are on July 17 in the Championship League, but whether he plays in those or not is yet to be seen. More Trending
The Saudi Arabia Masters in Jeddah in August would be the next event for the Bullet after that.
Asked about his fall outside of the top 16 at the World Championship in April, Brecel said he was actually looking forward to qualifiers.
'There's also a good side, less travelling maybe, less extra tournaments so for me it's maybe better,' he said of no longer being in the top 16.
'I enjoy the qualifiers to be honest, I don't need to be on the TV table, I like being on the outside table as well. For me it's all about playing snooker.'

EXCLUSIVE Extraordinary way Lauren Sanchez chose Parisian pastry chef Cédric Grolet to design world's most extravagant cake for wedding to Jeff Bezos

A superstar French patisserie chef is creating 'one of the most expensive wedding cakes ever made' for the Venice wedding of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos to Lauren Sanchez this weekend, can exclusively reveal. Cédric Grolet has won international plaudits and legions of social media fans for his luxury trompe-l'oeil (artistic illusion) desserts, which are sculpted to resemble fresh fruit or flowers. Sanchez, 55, fell in love with the 39-year-old's exquisite creations during her May bachelorette trip to Paris, where A-list friends including Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry joined her for high tea at Le Meurice Hotel. Grolet has been the pastry chef at the five-star institution since 2012. Sources in the French capital have revealed that Grolet has spent weeks designing a wedding cake he hopes will be an 'utterly unforgettable' part of the couple's $20million nuptials. The custom-made cake – which is being created under the strictest secrecy – will be unveiled during their wedding reception on San Giovanni Evangelista Island, in the lagoon city this weekend. Grolet's central role in the wedding was revealed by the Mail on Tuesday after his name was snapped on a local tour guide's clipboard as she collected arrivals at the city's airport. During a fun-filled bachelorette weekend, former journalist Sanchez and her glamorous pals thought Grolet's 'cakes and patisseries were absolutely adorable,' a senior staff member at Le Meurice told Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are tying the knot this weekend in a lavish $20million wedding in Venice 'They especially liked the fact that all of Cédric's creations are light and fresh, making them ideal for celebrities who need to watch their weight. 'Cédric has a fantastic personality, and is a culinary superstar in France, so he loved meeting Ms Sanchez and the gang. 'They got on so well that she actually invited Cédric to fly out to Italy to work at the wedding. The rest of us are very jealous!' It can also be revealed that Grolet has flown out to the lagoon city with his glamorous influencer model girlfriend, Astrid-Olivia Germain, who posts frequent social media updates on their globetrotting. Grolet and Germain enjoy a luxurious life together, with the pastry virtuoso recently revealing that he bought her a Cartier love bracelet worth thousands of dollars. In an interview with the Financial Times last year, he showed off his large collection of rare Nike sneakers – including a Travis Scott-designed pair, which he said are a 'collector's item'. His home also boasts a wine cellar, and he has enjoyed several holidays with friends in Bali, Indonesia, as well as regular snowboarding holidays in the French Alps. Grolet – who has almost 13 million Instagram and 9 million TikTok followers – has legions of fans flocking to his cafes and bakeries around the world to pay eye-watering prices for his pastries. At his Paris venues, a small strawberry pavlova costs €18 ($20) and an apple tart is €80 ($93), with the chef previously criticized for selling Yule Logs for almost $100 each. Asked about the price-tag of his creations, the Mail's source added: 'It's true that Cédric's work doesn't come cheap – I guess this could be one of the most expensive wedding cakes ever made. 'But who knows, maybe they're all such good friends now, that the couple will get the cake as a present.' Another Paris-based colleague of the patisserie chef said: 'Cédric is so excited to be a part of all this – yes, this is all about billionaires, but they're all down-to-earth people who ultimately want to have a bit of fun.' Grolet's extraordinary talent certainly earns him big bucks but the real money to be made is in his custom-designed cakes, including those for weddings, when prices can rocket into the thousands of dollars. 'The sky's the limit if you want a personalized cake,' said a long-term client of the Grolet shops. 'You just hand over your design, and they'll work out the cost'. Sanchez and Bezos are in regal company in securing a custom cake. Later this summer, Grolet – who has filmed social media baking stunts with celebrities including Blake Lively and Zoë Saldana – will unveil an exclusive creation in honor of Prince Albert of Monaco when he becomes executive pastry chef at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. On Tuesday revealed how Grolet's name was seen on tour guide Beatrice Bavato's clipboard under 'staff' for the London-based luxury wedding planners Lanza and Baucina. A note of 'Valentin' next to his name may provide a hint as to the theme he is going for the couple's wedding cake when examined alongside his previous love-themed creations. For this year's Valentine's Day, Grolet shared a video of himself online creating a strikingly life-like bright red toffee apple. His reimagined sculpted fruit had a caramel mousse and apple filling surrounded by Japanese vanilla biscuit and Breton shortbread, encased in a glazed red icing. On a previous Valentine's Day, he crafted a red heart-shaped Vanilla cake, which was iced to resemble a rose. When approached by about his plans for the couple's wedding cake, Grolet refused to comment. Grolet moved to Paris in 2006 and honed his craft at the renowned bakery 'Fauchon'. After six years at Fauchon, he joined the two Michelin-starred restaurant of Le Meurice under the tutelage of expert chef Alain Ducasse, where he became executive pastry chef in 2013. His extraordinary talent for desserts was quickly recognized by gourmets and he was showered with a slew of awards including best pastry chef in France in 2015 and best pastry chef in the world in 2018. Grolet's success initially saw him open several locations in his name, with the first two in Paris: Le Meurice Cédric Grolet in 2018 and Cédric Grolet Opera in 2019. In 2022, he opened Cédric Grolet at the five-star Berkeley hotel in London's Knightsbridge before conquering Singapore with a pastry shop in the high-end Como Metropolitan hotel. He is also an author, with several books of his cakes and desserts published between 2017 and 2022. The pastry star previously spoke openly about undergoing a hair transplant, saying he wanted a 'straighter, squarer hairline like Kylian Mbappé', the France international soccer player. He also had a beard transplant and told social media followers at the time: 'I'm really happy I had this transplant. It doesn't hurt that much, and if it can make you feel better, don't hesitate.'

Snooker chiefs reveal Ding Junhui and Seniors champ hit with fines

The latest update to the WPBSA's record of disciplinary cases reveals fines for Chinese superstar Ding Junhui and World Seniors champion Alfie Burden. While some disciplinary outcomes are published individually, snooker's governing body periodically updates their list of cases, unveiling some more punishments. Ding was hit with a fine for 'publicly criticising snooker parties in social media posts' at the 2024 Scottish Open. The former world number one criticised the tables at the Edinburgh event on Chinese social media site Weibo after losing 4-3 to Luca Brecel. 'I have never played on a s*** table like this – the bounce on the cushion was the same as that of a spring. How can one control the cue ball on such a table?' Ding wrote, via the South China Morning Post. 'A bunch of amateur table installers packed up a pile of s*** for the professional players to play with, and you dare call yourself a professional event.' WST responded in a statement, which read: 'All the tables provided by Xingpai around the world have always been the best. We have a rigorous table-testing programme to provide the best playing conditions for all events. 'We also employ the best table installation team in the world. With their excellent skills and vast experience, they are able to overcome various challenges in every game to ensure that the game conditions are optimal. 'Ding made some negative comments this week after his loss to Brecel, which we strongly oppose. These comments are isolated as we have not received any negative feedback from other players this week regarding the playing conditions.' Ding was fined £4,000 for his comments, although £2,500 of which was suspended to March 13, 2025. He also had to pay £975 in costs. Burden was hit with a £1,500 fine and given a formal warning as to his future behaviour due to 'inappropriate behaviour' in a World Seniors Championship qualifying match in April. The 48-year-old went on to win the World Seniors Championship at the Crucible in May and remembers the incident as 'punching the table a couple of times and swearing.' The list of disciplinary outcomes also included Matt Selt's £10,000 fine and suspended three-month ban for aggressive and abusive behaviour, which has previously been reported. It was also confirmed that Mark Allen was fined £4,000, of which £2,500 suspended until March 5, 2026 and he had to pay costs of £1,753 for 'publicly criticising snooker parties in TV interview and live newspaper interview.' More Trending This was regarding Allen hitting out at table fitters at the 2024 British Open and saying the tables should be burned. 'The conditions out there are absolutely embarrassing,' Allen told ITV after beating Gary Wilson 4-3 at the British Open. 'It's some of the worst weather outside and they've left the massive transport doors open. It's so cold, it's so humid out there. 'There's new guys doing the tables this year and they're clearly not up to it. The cushions are unplayable, uncontrollable. It was heavy. The table needs to be burned.' WST said in a statement: 'Our table-fitting team has been consistent for some time and works to the highest standards. The weather in the area has seen unprecedented rainfall over the last couple of days which can negatively influence the conditions. We have raised the issue of an open door with the venue.' The iconic company has opened a new pop-up store in Westfield White City, in West London. The store opened last Friday, June 20. However, it is set to have a ceremonial Grand Opening on Saturday, June 28 at 12pm. The festivities will begin with a traditional Disney lock and key ceremony - opening the doors to a day of family fun. The lucky first 200 guests for the occasion will receive complimentary Disney ears and flags to help get the party mood going. The celebratory day will feature special stands and staff, including temporary tattoo stations and roaming balloon artists. There will also be early access to Disney Store's Once Upon a Story Dolls - inspired by the company's rich history of Disney Princess storytelling. Further treats for those in attendance will include surprise giveaways lasting throughout the weekend, and special gifts with purchases over £20. Fans of the new Lilo and Stitch film are in luck, as the store will include exclusive Disney Store range for this production. This will become the third Disney store in the UK and Ireland. The other two remain open in Oxford Street, London, and in Dublin, Ireland. Four years ago, Disney announced that it would be closing all but the above two stores. Some of the stores which were shut included the Westfield Stratford, East London, and Sunderland branches in June 2021. These were followed by the Marlands Centre, Southampton, and the York store, the following month. Then in September 2021, Disney announced that every UK and Ireland store would close, apart from its two flagship Oxford Street and Dublin shops. In response to the new Westfield White City store's opening, Disney said: "We are launching the Disney Store Westfield store now in response to strong fan demand for more ways to experience Disney in-person beyond the Parks. "It's the right moment to reconnect with guests in a physical space and offer a destination where they can shop, explore, and celebrate the stories they love. "The priority target audiences are Disney fans and families seeking authentic, high-quality products that bring their favourite characters and stories to life. "By launching the pop-up at Westfield London, the largest shopping centre in Europe with over 27.9 million visitors annually, Disney Store is perfectly positioned to engage a broad and diverse audience in a high-footfall, family-friendly environment. "Disney Store is home to authentic and high-quality products across all Disney brands and franchises: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, that help bring a touch of Disney magic into the everyday. "Our Westfield store will offer fans a flavour of the full collection of these names."
