Al-Ahli downs Kawasaki Frontale to lift Asian Champions League title

Japan Times03-05-2025

Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli beat Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 to win the Asian Champions League Elite title for the first time at a raucous King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Saturday.
Brazil winger Galeno broke Kawasaki's resistance in the 35th minute when he bent an unstoppable strike into the top corner to send the home side on the way to its first Asian title, with Franck Kessie heading in the second seven minutes later.
The victory makes Al-Ahli the third Saudi club to win the competition in its various guises, joining city rivals and two-time champion Al-Ittihad and Riyadh's four-time champion Al-Hilal.
"We are so proud," said Al-Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. "Once we knew the final eight would be played in Jeddah it was our goal to be champions in front of our fans. Since I came here 18 months ago, they have supported us so much.
"As I said when I signed here, it's to make history, to continue to win trophies and make this club as big as it was before."
Al-Ahli was the heavy favorite with a lineup featuring an expensive array of foreign talent that includes UEFA Champions League winners Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino.
Twice inside the opening six minutes, Louis Yamaguchi denied the home side, with the Kawasaki goalkeeper blocking Ivan Toney's viciously struck right-foot effort before making a point-blank block at the resulting corner from Ziyad Al-Johani.

Frontale almost silenced the crowd in the 11th minute with a moment of individual skill from Marcinho. The Brazilian glided beyond Ali Majrashi to bear down on goal only to shoot across the area and past the far post.
Toney fired wide and Roger Ibanez was just off target with a curling effort from the edge of the area as Al-Ahli increased the pressure, but a disciplined Kawasaki held firm.
However, the opener eventually came with 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Kawasaki gave away possession close to its own goal.
Firmino fed Galeno in space 25 meters out and, as midfielder So Kawahara made a late, vain attempt to close the Brazilian down, the former Porto man bent a perfectly measured right-foot strike into the top corner.
Al-Ahli doubled its lead soon after when the Saudi side capitalized on its opponents being temporarily down to 10 men with left back Sota Miura off the field injured.
Firmino was heavily involved again, bursting through on the right side of the area to clip a cross into the 6-yard box that the quickly arriving Ivorian Kessie rose to head home.
Substitute Sai van Wermeskerken nodded wide as Kawasaki sought a way back into the game and substitute Tatsuya Ito, the hero of Kawasaki's semifinal win over Al-Nassr, shot just wide with 15 minutes remaining.
Ito flashed another strike across Mendy's goal and Ibanez denied Shin Yamada a late opportunity as Al-Ahli celebrated victory in its third appearance in the final after runner-up finishes in 1986 and 2012.

Paris to deploy 5,400 police for Champions League final

FILE PHOTO: A Police officer stands guard on the Champs Elysees avenue, next to the Arc de Triomphe, in Paris, France, April 26, 2025. REUTERS/Abdul Saboor/File Photo soccer Paris will deploy 5,400 police officers for Saturday's UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, police chief Laurent Nunez said on Friday in an interview with French broadcaster Cnews. Although the match will be held in Munich, a PSG victory would be expected to spark celebrations in the club's home city which could escalate into disturbances. In light of the incident in Liverpool earlier this week in which a car ploughed into soccer fans, Nunez said traffic around the Arc de Triomphe - one of the city's best-known landmarks - will be blocked from midday Saturday, with the Champs-Élysées boulevard and nearby streets also closed that evening. PSG's win over Arsenal earlier this month, which secured their place in the final, sparked a night of unrest in Paris, with 47 people arrested and three others injured after being hit by a car. "From 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) this Saturday, there will be no more traffic on the Champs-Élysées and in the perpendicular streets," Nunez said. "Individuals who come solely to commit vandalism and loot businesses, that's a pattern we're obviously working to systematically put an end to. That will also be the case on Saturday evening," he added. "We will obviously be extremely firm. As soon as there is damage, attacks on law enforcement, there will be interventions." © Thomson Reuters 2025.

Man Utd booed off after friendly loss in Malaysia

A fan sits in the stands before the friendly between Manchester United and Asean All-Stars soccer Manchester United suffered fresh embarrassment and were booed off as they lost 1-0 to a Southeast Asian XI in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday in front of 72,550. Ruben Amorim's side, who finished 15th in the Premier League for their worst season since 1974, looked lethargic and devoid of ideas in the grueling heat. Some fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium left before the end and there were boos at the final whistle. United have struggled for goals all year and it was more evidence why they are reportedly prepared to shell out £62.5 million ($85 million) on Brazilian international attacker Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Amorim, who was clearly frustrated during the match and shook his head at times, refused to confirm the Cunha deal. The Portuguese coach was happy though to leave the Malaysian capital and head to Hong Kong with no new injuries and had no issue with fans booing his team off. "We were slow and we still don't have it in us to win every exercise in training, every game," he said. "The boos from the fans, it's something that we need." He added: "These people believe in Manchester United no matter what the context. It's our duty to improve the team and to improve the team next season. For me, we need to have that belief, that hunger to win every game, that is important." In their first of two post-season games in Asia, United started with several regulars including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Andre Onana. In temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) at kickoff, it was the ASEAN All Stars who looked more threatening in the first half. They shot just wide in the 16th minute and Onana was then called into action with a low save that endeared him to the pro-United crowd. Mainoo provided the first real threat for United with a 25-yard effort that was turned behind for a corner, before the young midfielder saw his shot cleared off the line in the 38th minute. Captain Bruno Fernandes came on in the second half and his half-volley lit up a drab restart. Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, on the trip despite looking like he is headed for the exit at United, made a lively cameo off the bench. United were better in the second half but the Southeast Asian side stunned the visitors in the 71st minute when Burmese attacker Maung Maung Lwin found himself clean through on goal before firing into the top corner past Tom Heaton. Soon after Heaton came to United's rescue to prevent further embarrassment. United play the Hong Kong team on Friday. © 2025 AFP

Football: Marinos stun Antlers as bottom beat top in J1 classic

KYODO NEWS - 3 hours ago - 21:20 | Sports Bottom side Yokohama F Marinos stunned leaders Kashima Antlers 3-1 in the J-League first division on Sunday, the home team ending their record-worst seven-game losing run and 11-game winless streak. The only two "original 10" inaugural J-League members in 1993 who have never been relegated could not have had a more contrasting opening to this season, with Kashima flying high under new manager Toru Oniki while Marinos already parting ways with Steve Holland after a disastrous start and replacing him with Patrick Kisnorbo. But it was Kashima who came away empty-handed at Nissan Stadium, seeing their seven-game winning run come to an end and stay on 37 points as their lead at the top was narrowed to three points after second-placed Kashiwa Reysol drew 1-1 at Yokohama FC. "It feels great. I think it's down to all the players," Kisnorbo said at Nissan Stadium. "The last couple of weeks we've been building and building on our performances and today it shows that. But we can't stop now, we'll keep training hard and keep working." Marinos went in front after just four minutes as Kashima failed to clear the ball in the box, with left-back Katsuya Nagato arriving to strike the ball on a bounce to find the far bottom corner. Their dream start continued with Yan Matheus capping a flowing one-touch move from the left in the 13th minute. Takuya Kida's pass was laid off by Anderson Lopes and Riku Yamane to set up the Brazilian, who swept the ball into the left bottom corner. Lopes set up Marinos' third in the 27th minute after skipping past two challenges to feed compatriot Matheus, whose accurate curling effort from 20 meters out went in beyond a diving Kashima keeper Tomoki Hayakawa. Kashima got one back in the 36th minute in an unexpected manner when Ryotaro Araki passed inside the box to striker Leo Ceara, who was trying to get back up to his feet following a tangle and totally unaware as the ball bounced off him and looped into the net. The visitors failed to turn their dominance into chances after the break, however, and it was Marinos who had a golden opportunity in the 71st minute when Ren Kato had a shot saved at the near post, leaving an unmarked Lopes -- who was waiting for a tap-in -- furious. But it mattered little in the end as Marinos hung on to claim their first win since March 16, moving up to 11 points and eight points off safety. Elsewhere, Sanfrecce Hiroshima beat FC Tokyo 3-0 away for their fifth straight win to move up to 32 points, while 10-man Kyoto Sanga suffered a late 1-0 loss at Tokyo Verdy to remain on 31 points. Shimizu S-Pulse saw off Vissel Kobe 3-2, Fagiano Okayama drew 2-2 with Machida Zelvia and Albirex Niigata came from behind to beat Shonan Bellmare 2-1 to move up to 16 points, five points above Marinos. Kawasaki Frontale and Gamba Osaka drew 2-2.
