CM Naidu to plant saplings today
Guntur: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K Pavan Kalyan will plant saplings during 'Vana Mahostavam' at Eco Park of Ananthavaram village under Tulluru police station limits on Thursday on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Later, they will address a public meeting. AP Forest Department and AP Pollution Control Board are jointly conducting the programme.
Guntur district in-charge collector A Bhargav Teja and SP S Satish Kumar on Wednesday reviewed the arrangements for the CM's visit. They inspected the dais which was under construction for VVIPs, barricading roads leading to the venue.
SP Satish Kumar directed the police officials to take steps to check traffic jams and solve traffic problems. Additional SP Ravi Kumar, RDO Srinivasa Rao, Tulluru DSP Murali Krishna were also present.

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to take immediate steps to ensure irrigation water for the Krishna and Godavari Delta regions to support timely Kharif crop cultivation. During a review meeting of the Water Resources Department at the State Secretariat on Friday, Naidu emphasised the need to advance the crop season to avoid cyclone-related losses and ensure crops are harvested before the cyclone season. He stressed three key priorities, which include increasing groundwater levels, filling reservoirs, and optimising water resource management. He urged officials to maintain green cover across agricultural lands year-round by promoting three-crop cycles. Expressing dissatisfaction with non-functional piezometers and AWS sensors used to monitor groundwater, he allocated Rs 30 crore for the immediate procurement of new equipment to enable scientific water auditing.

Bharat Mata row: CPI hits out at Raj Bhavan, to hoist Tricolour in protest
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Coming out against the Raj Bhavan over the Bharat Mata row, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam on Friday said all branches of the party will hoist the national flag and plant saplings on Saturday to underscore the message that Bharat Mata is truly represented by the Tricolour. He said the saplings will be nurtured by the party branches as symbols of national unity. 'The events that unfolded in the past 48 hours in the Raj Bhavan, culminating in the sanctification of an image associated with the RSS in the official residence of the constitutional authority, cannot be condoned by anyone who celebrates the idea of India and honours the Constitution in letter and spirit,' Binoy said. Elaborating on the circumstances that led to the controversy, he said on World Environment Day on June 5, the agriculture department headed by Minister P Prasad decided to distribute and plant saplings with the participation of the honourable Governor at the Raj Bhavan. 'On June 4, the minister's office received a 'revised' schedule of programme in which 'prayer' was replaced with 'lighting of the lamp' and paying 'floral tributes to Bharatamba' (image of Bharat Mata allegedly used by the RSS at its functions),' he said. Binoy said Prasad called the official in charge at Raj Bhavan and enquired about the changes. 'He was told floral offerings would be made to a portrait of Bharatamba. The minister said details of the portrait should be shared as it is a government event and unprecedented changes, for both the government and Raj Bhavan, are now being incorporated,' he said.

Andhra Pradesh government approves 10-hour daily workday; workers' unions protest
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh's TDP-led govt has decided to amend labour laws to increase mandatory work hours from nine to 10 a day in all private firms and factories. The move is aimed attracting more investments and industries but has drawn fire from trade unions who argue that the move will turn workers into "slaves". The N Chandrababu Naidu-led cabinet has cleared the latest amendments to the labour code. "Govt has decided to amend these sections as part of its Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) policy. The relaxation of rules will help attract more investments," said information and public relations minister K Pardhasaradhi. CPM state secretary V Srinivasa Rao condemned the move and demanded its withdrawal. "The state is under pressure from central govt to amend rules to appease big industrialists. These amendments will only make the workers slaves," Rao alleged. He pointed out that the Andhra govt had taken this "unfortunate decision" when the entire workforce in the country was getting ready for a strike on July 9 against amendments to labour laws. Under Andhra Pradesh Factories Act, no adult worker shall be subject to work for more than nine hours in a day. The Act prescribes a half-an-hour interval after continuous work for five hours in the total slot of nine hours. Unions fear workers would end up putting in over 12 hours daily if the factory managements confine them two hours past the scheduled time. The Naidu-led cabinet has also decided to amend the rules related to overtime (OT) and night shifts. Women workers are now allowed night shifts. According to rules, employees are entitled to an additional paid holiday in lieu of the night shift. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the facility will now be granted at the discretion of the management. The overtime schedule has also been increased to 144 hours from 75 hours. This means workers will be entitled to get additional wages in the form of overtime only after working 144 hours. The existing laws prohibit working in overlapping schedules to reduce the burden on the worker. However, Andhra govt has left the decision to the management. "Increasing work hours will impact overall health of workers and ultimately performance. It is not a wise move to force a human being to work more than the prescribed eight hours a day," Dr T Seva Kumar, a general physician, said.
