Match of the Day returned in the most gentle of ways

Match of the Day returned in the most gentle of ways

Telegraph2 days ago
Mark Chapman got in there right from the kick-off with, dare one say it, a Lineker-esque, self-deprecating, gentle quip.
'Evening. The Premier League is back, and Match of the Day is back. Now you may have seen and heard that there is a big change to the show this season and that is… Wayne Rooney has joined us as a regular pundit. Some things don't change though: Alan [Shearer] is still here.'
And with this sensible five-iron off the tee, the new triumvirate Match of the Day era began.
Rooney was given centre stage straight away to deliver a segment of analysis about Sunderland ripping apart West Ham's defence; it was alright if a little halting. Early days. He and Shearer didn't particularly interact with each other throughout the show, it felt like Chapman had to guide and encourage one of them at a time. Something more cohesive and free-flowing might develop.
Rooney seems like a good bloke, a shy person with a sense of humour. Nothing in his managerial CV speaks to any sort of tactical or analytical genius so maybe his BBC handlers can find a way to utilise him in a way other than 'errrrm, the full-back's gone wide here' etc?
His unusual playing status of being a legitimate Premier League great who nevertheless did not quite squeeze everything he could have from his talent makes him a more human and relatable figure than many others of his elite level. I'd like to hear from him about the mental and emotional side of playing in the Premier League: the most natural and interesting section on Saturday night's programme was when Rooney and Shearer gave their opinion on the Alexander Isak situation.
There was an interview with Rooney after Match of the Day, and they've also got him doing a podcast series with Kelly Somers. 'Blimey, you're taking over,' joked Chapman. Wazza is reportedly getting £800,000 a year from the BBC so you'd hope they can get value one way or the other.
As for the new Match of the Day, at the end of the day, Gary, it was what it always should have been: a football highlights show with a skilled, unobtrusive host getting some chit-chat about the key moments from a couple of ex-players who hopefully occasionally say something mildly interesting.
The issues with Lineker had never been about his warm, gracious TV presenting, which was never controversial or provocative. It wasn't like he was introducing the football dressed as Che Guevara or saying 'Micah, never mind about that offside: do you think Zelensky should cede territory in the Donbas?' It was on social media, not the box, that all the problems lay, and given that Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan are all far too prudent to get involved in that nonsense, you'd imagine this should be smooth sailing with no further posturing nor self-inflicted wounds.
Cates, for instance, had told Telegraph Sport: 'There's a tendency to believe that if somebody isn't talking about something, they don't care about it. I think it's perfectly possible to care about something and keep quiet and let experts talk about it.' How refreshing.
So we can predict with confidence that Cates and Logan will follow suit with Chapman and slot in with unshowy excellence. Which isn't to say that there have been no changes: the Match of the Day 2 Sunday show has now been rebranded to simply Match of the Day. Gabby has first use of the facilities for that one this Sunday. Caring about that minuscule piece of reframing really does seem a bridge too far for even the most committed telly addict.
Perhaps slightly more surprisingly, the BBC is now putting short Premier League highlights up on its website at 8pm on Saturdays: a whistle-stop seven minutes with all the day's goals and key moments. You might reasonably wonder if the BBC is cannibalising its own product by scooping MOTD by two and a half hours, but then again, BBC Sport could rightly argue that anyone who wants to have seen the goals will have watched them clipped up on social media nearly live anyway. There's not many Likely Lads around these days.
In terms of any new editorial direction for Chapman and company, BBC Chairman Samit Shah has said that MOTD 'should not be built around highlights. It should be built around analysis'. Apparently Shah is a Manchester United fan, so you can understand why he might not want to see too much on-field action at the moment. And only a top media executive could argue for less televised football on a football TV show but that's why they – or rather, you – pay him the big bucks I guess.
Chapman, pointing to wins for Manchester City and Liverpool, signed off by saying: 'I suppose you could say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.' Indeed so. It'll probably all be fine and with the new presenters, both the BBC and the viewers are in safe hands.

BBC spends £61,000 on 10,000 pin badges, 7,000 mugs and 6,000 lanyards for it's 'Call It Out' campaign - in bid to stamp out bad behaviour after string of scandals

The BBC has spent £61,000 on office accessories to encourage staff to call out bad behavior in the wake of recent scandals. The corporation has bought 10,000 pin badges, 7,000 mugs and 6,000 lanyards for the new 'Call It Out' campaign, according to a Freedom of Information request by Sky News. The campaign was launched by director general Tim Davie in April, in response to its Workplace Culture Review. The review was commissioned in the wake of the Huw Edwards scandal and found that there were 'powerful figures' at the BBC who made their colleagues' lives 'unbearable'. The new initiative hopes to 'encourage open feedback, celebrate positive behaviour and deal promptly with concerns', as well as help staff to raise workplace concerns. In the past year the BBC has been engulfed in multiple scandals including its highest paid presenter Gary Lineker being forced out of Match of the Day after he shared an anti-semitic social media post. Last month, Gregg Wallace and John Torode were axed as MasterChef judges after allegations of misconduct and racist language against them were upheld. Strictly Come Dancing has come under repeated scrutiny after Ammanda Abbington's bullying claims last year. A video later emerged of professional dancer Graziano Di Prima kicking his celebrity partner Zara McDermott, and he was sacked. Opera singer Wynne Evans lost his job at BBC Radio Wales after he was found to have used a vile sexual slur during the Strictly tour. In February, the BBC apologised for DJ Tim Westwood's 'bullying and misogynistic behaviour' while he worked as a presenter on Radio 1. Announcing the Call It Out initiative in April, Davie said: 'We're rolling out a new 'Call it Out' campaign: This is designed to be highly-visible, high-impact and we're all going to be seeing a lot of it in the coming weeks. 'We want to build confidence and that really came through in the staff survey. And we want that confidence throughout the organisation to call out bad behaviour and challenge whatever falls short of our standards, and to play their part in building a positive culture that we are proud of. 'That includes recognising exemplary behaviour – an important part of the report's recommendations. ' 'And we'll be asking everyone to download our 'Call it Out' guide to help them flag the good, call out the bad, and encourage a more open and transparent discussion around our culture. Dare I say we need to be a little less British sometimes and speak in a way that is a little less British sometimes.' Almost £20,000 has been spent on branded 'Call It Out' mugs, while more than £6,000 worth of pin badges and lanyards have been purchased, and are now available across 72 BBC sites in the UK.

Rangers boss Martin dismisses reports star asset Raskin has handed in a transfer request

RANGERS boss Russell Martin has dismissed any suggestion that star midfielder Nico Raskin has asked to leave the club. Reports emerged online over the weekend claiming that the Belgian international had formally handed in a transfer request amid ongoing interest from abroad. Martin spoke last week about how Raskin's head may have been turned earlier in the summer, whilst also praising his attitude and the way he has since knuckled down. But the Ibrox boss was emphatic in shooting down reports that Raskin had apparently informed the club of his intention to leave. Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Champions League play-off showdown with Club Brugge in Glasgow, Martin said: 'I've loved working with Nico, I think he'll get better and better. 'The only reason he wasn't in the squad on Saturday (against Alloa) was for a rest. But he's trained really well. I think he's going to be a big player for us. 'I said that from the beginning. I've also said it's been a difficult summer for him and all that, but really, the last few weeks, I've loved the energy that Nico's brought. 'He's been really good. We analysed his clips, me and him together, from the game against Plzen last Tuesday. 'He is going to be really important for us. He will play tomorrow night and he'll be a good player for us. 'So, no, I've not heard anything (about him asking to leave). Not at all. He's been brilliant. I'm pretty sure Kevin (Thelwell, sporting director) and Patrick (Stewart, chief executive) would have told me if we'd heard that sooner.' Knowing that a £40million windfall is at stake if Rangers can secure Champions League football, Martin and his players will go up against a Brugge side who reached the last 16 in last season's competition. Whilst Rangers will be rated as underdogs by most observers, Martin doesn't want his team to approach the match with that sort of mentality. He also believes qualifying for the Champions League would be transformational for the club, both in terms of finances and also accelerating the development of his new-look team. Urging his players to seize the opportunity, he continued: 'I don't think we'd ever go into any game considering ourselves underdogs, for sure. 'If we can qualify, I think the belief it would give the players would be massive. I think what it would do for the football club financially would be huge. 'So I think if we were able to do it, which I really believe we can, if we can do it and qualify for it, I think it would be brilliant. 'Someone asked me if we've got the squad depth and all that to sustain it, if we need to worry about it, I think let's try and get in there first and qualify. 'Then we're building a squad that has to compete in Europe, whether it's Europa League or the Champions League. So I think it would be incredibly exciting. It would help us a lot as a football club moving forward. 'Not just financially, but what it would do for the players and their belief. And to then pit yourself against some of the best teams in the world would be a brilliant opportunity for us. 'So we're here to try and attack it as much as we can. I want the players to really seize the opportunity. 'Rather than feeling the weight of it (pressure and expectation), look at the other side. Look at how brilliant it would be if we can achieve this together.' The main issues in terms of team selection will come up front and at left-back. Cyriel Dessers is rated as touch and go as he recovers from a knee injury, meaning that Danilo will probably get the nod. Rangers are hopeful of pushing through the paperwork in order for new signing Jayden Meghoma to start at left-back, with Max Aarons also an option. 'We think he (Meghoma) is going to be registered in time for tomorrow's match,' added Martin. 'We hope so anyway, so we'll have to wait and see. But yeah, that's the hope, that he can be in the squad. We will see, today and yesterday he trained, so we'll see if he's ready to go. 'Big Cyriel is probably the only concern. He'll be touch and go. He's responded really well to treatment. It was nowhere near as bad as we first feared. So if it's not tomorrow, we expect him to be back for the weekend and next week.'

Jamie Vardy lined up for major shock transfer to Champions League team - in what could be a dream move for wife Rebekah

Jamie Vardy has emerged as a surprise target for Napoli. The free agent former England international has been taking his time considering offers with a number of top clubs showing interest. Italian champions Napoli have now added the 38-year old to their list of options after Romelu Lukaku was ruled out for three months with injury. Chelsea 's Nicolas Jackson is another target but could prove too expensive. Vardy left Leicester City at the end of the season after a glittering spell that saw him score 200 goals in 500 appearances and win the Premier League and FA Cup. His fitness, professionalism and mentality mean he is still an attractive proposition to top tier sides despite his advancing years. Celtic, Rangers and Everton are among the other sides to have shown levels of interest in recent weeks. Napoli have previously asked about Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and that was prior to Lukaku's injury. The 32-year old Belgium international may need surgery after tearing a thigh muscle in his left leg against Olympiacos during a friendly last week.
