McDonald's Japan ends Pokemon card Happy Meal promotion early amid reports of food wastage, scalping
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Photos of piles of Happy Meals dumped haphazardly outside McDonald's outlets are circulating on social media. A promotional deal in Japan involving McDonald's and Pokemon ended prematurely on Aug 9, as reports of card resales and food wastage poured in from disgruntled social media users. From Aug 9 to 11, those who bought the fast-food chain's Happy Meals – a set meal targeted primarily at children – were to also receive a pack of exclusive Pokemon cards. Such collectible cards have seen a global resurgence of interest since the Covid-19 pandemic, with new launches sometimes accompanied by scenes of chaos. Each Happy Meal was bundled with a pack of two random picks from a pool of cards exclusive to the promotion. PHOTO: POKEMON Following the start of the promotion, pictures have surfaced online of bags of food left unclaimed in McDonald's Japan stores, or left haphazardly outside them. 'We regret to inform you that the distribution of Pokemon cards to customers who purchased the Pokemon Happy Meal, which was scheduled for three days only from Aug 9 to Aug 11, has ended at many stores due to higher than expected sales,' said McDonald's Japan in a statement on Aug 9. 'We sincerely apologise for not being able to meet the expectations of our customers who were looking forward to the product due to the early end of distribution.' The statement did not address criticisms of McDonald's Japan's lack of crowd management or the improper allocation of stock, or the incidences of food wastage that had risen from the promotion. Many social media users denounced those who bought the Happy Meals only for the cards while leaving the food behind, sharing images of rows of unclaimed bags of meals lined up on tables at the stores, with only the card packs taken out. Others shared photos of piles of Happy Meals dumped haphazardly outside the outlets they were bought from and stuffed into the baskets of parked bicycles nearby. 'Early morning chaos in Shibuya. McDonald's burgers and fries scattered on the streets, turning into a feast for pigeons. We ask customers to take responsibility for the food they buy and properly dispose of trash,' said an X user. The post was accompanied by a video of flocks of pigeons pecking at presumably food scraps next to crumpled McDonald's bags. 'I don't know if you want to resell Happy Meals, but isn't it a bit much to keep buying them all up like this every time? And throwing away the burgers is just way too immoral, seriously, I wish something could be done about it. What a waste,' said another X user, posting a video of two individuals dumping bags of Happy Meals into rubbish bags. Happy Meals cost slightly more than 500 yen (S$4.35) per set, with an order limit of five meals per person during the Pokemon promotion. However, this did not appear to deter some buyers, who reportedly circumvented the limit by using multiple mobile accounts to place orders. The cards have been put up for sale on e-commerce platforms for several times the price of the meal.

National Day face-off: Which fast-food chain nailed its limited-edition offering?
Every year, fast-food restaurants put their own spin on local flavours for National Day. This year, it seemed like everyone was spinning their take from the same thread - or maybe chilli crab sauce suppliers were offering an irresistible deal. The New Paper tried limited-time offerings from five fast-food restaurants, from laksa fish to chilli crab prawn. Guzman y Gomez: Burrito Bowl with Laksa Barramundi TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Guzman y Gomez is serving up a new limited-edition filling this National Day - the Laksa Barramundi. This new addition features pan-seared barramundi fillets topped with a laksa sauce made from dried shrimp, candlenut, laksa leaves, spices, and coconut milk from The Coconut Club. We tried it in a Burrito Bowl, which came with fragrant white rice, black beans, salsa, and corn chips. Maybe it's the Singaporean in us, but the whole thing gave off major cai png (mixed rice) vibes - like the lovechild of a cai png stall and a Mexican taqueria. The laksa sauce added a flavourful, coconut-rich depth to every bite of the barramundi, which was tender and generously portioned. The black beans had a soft and creamy texture, and the chips provided a nice crunch. Overall, it was an inoffensive fusion with each element complementing the others, although we did raise an eyebrow at the cheese sitting on top of the laksa barramundi. Rating: 4/5 McDonald's: Chilli Crab Sauce Prawn Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE You could say McDonald's pioneered the trend of controversial National Day specials - from the iconic Nasi Lemak Burger to interesting inventions such as the Crispy Hainanese Chicken Burger and the Laksa Delight Burger. This year, the chain was the first among many quick-service restaurants to bring chilli crab sauce burgers to the table. The Chilli Crab Sauce Prawn Burger comes stacked with fluffy scrambled eggs, chilli crab sauce, a prawn patty, lettuce, and coleslaw dressing, all packed into a bun. For some reason, the chilli crab sauce leaned much sweeter than spicy - almost reminiscent of Thai sweet chilli sauce. Perhaps they're continuing the Thai theme after last year's Thai Milk Tea Frappé. Though the sauce did taste a little like chilli crab sauce, it felt like a watered-down, family-friendly version that lacked a kick to it. The brioche bun was a bit questionable, too, giving the burger an odd buttery finish. We did enjoy the scrambled eggs, though, but we think we'll stick to having them in our breakfast burgers instead. Rating: 2/5 KFC: Chilli Crab Mantou Zinger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Swapping out the usual sesame buns for a fried mantou, this new Zinger burger pairs the brand's signature fried Zinger fillet with chilli crab sauce and lettuce. The chilli crab sauce here was much more flavourful than the version from the Golden Arches - sour and spicy, without being overly sweet. The fried mantou was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. However, that also meant that the burger felt extremely sinful and a tad bit salty. The few slices of lettuce were not enough to balance it out. Then again, it's fast food, so no one's expecting heaps of greens. Rating: 3.5/5 Long John Silver's: Chilli Crab Alaska Pollock Mantou Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE With lettuce, tomato slices, cheese, and battered Alaska pollock tucked between a fried mantou, the Chilli Crab Alaska Pollock Mantou Burger turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This unassuming burger ended up being our favourite as the fried mantou was perfectly crisped, with a crunchy top that made every bite extra satisfying. The vegetables also helped cut through any greasiness, which we appreciated. That said, the chilli crab sauce tasted more like a mildly spicy generic sauce than what it claimed to be. So even though we enjoyed it a lot, we were left a little puzzled by what we had eaten. Rating: 4.5/5 Burger King: Rendang Tendergrill Chicken Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Though Burger King's rendang series isn't new, it was a welcome break from all the chilli crab-themed burgers this National Day. The Rendang Tendergrill Chicken Burger came with a juicy, grilled chicken thigh patty and onions that were lathered with a generous amount of nutty, spiced rendang sauce. We felt that it was a little too jelak (cloying) after a few bites. Some greens besides just onions would've helped cut through the richness. Overall, nothing mind-blowing - they played it safe here. Rating: 3.5/5 Conclusion There were a few hits and misses - as expected each year. We just hope the chilli crab sauce craze sits the next one out.

Broadway's Gypsy revival, starring Audra McDonald, will close
NEW YORK – A boundary-breaking Broadway revival of Gypsy starring American actress Audra McDonald will end its run on Aug 17, much earlier than its producers had hoped. The run was originally open-ended, meaning that no closing date had been set, and tickets were on sale through Oct 5. But on July 16, the production announced the new closing date; at the time of its final performance, it will have played 28 preview and 269 regular performances at the Majestic Theatre in New York. The show is the sixth musical to announce a closing date since the Tony Awards in June (following Boop!, Cabaret, Dead Outlaw, Real Women Have Curves and Smash), reflecting Broadway's difficult financial dynamics (non-musical plays have been faring much better). Gypsy was nominated for five Tony Awards, including as Best Musical Revival and for McDonald's performance, but won none. The revival, directed by George C. Wolfe, was highly anticipated because McDonald, with six Tony Awards, is Broadway's most-honoured contemporary performer, and the 55-year-old is the first black actress to play on Broadway the lead role of Rose, the ur-stage mother whose daughter becomes a stripper. The musical, with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, was inspired by the memoirs of striptease artiste Gypsy Rose Lee; it first opened in 1959 and is generally considered one of Broadway's best golden age musicals. When the revival opened in December 2024, it received overwhelmingly positive reviews. In The New York Times, chief theatre critic Jesse Green named the show a critic's pick and wrote of McDonald, 'doing a psychological striptease, showing more of the character's rage than her predecessors, she is stupendously affecting'. At the box office, the show seemed to be selling well for much of its run, grossing well over US$1 million (S$1.3 million) most weeks in its early months and peaking at US$1.9 million during a week in mid-January. Gypsy also lost a substantial amount of potential revenue over the normally lucrative Christmas holidays when illnesses forced the cancellation of seven performances. Its weekly grosses have been heading in a troubling direction – last week, the show sold only 61 per cent of its seats and grossed US$816,086. And musicals have been fetching much lower ticket prices than starry plays. For example, during the week that ended June 1, when all three shows were running, the average ticket price at an Othello revival starring American actors Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal was US$425, and at Good Night, And Good Luck, starring Hollywood star George Clooney, it was US$339. The average ticket price for Gypsy was US$114. NYTIMES
