HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Drake State Community and Technical College hosted a ribbon-cutting for its new Leidos Advanced Training Complex on Friday.
Several notable community members spoke, like Drake State President Dr. Patricia Sims and Leidos CEO Tom Bell, as well as elected officials and community leaders.
City of Huntsville continues plan to expand Maple Hill Cemetery
The ribbon cutting marked the opening of the new 50,000-square-foot facility on campus. It will support education and training for fields like aerospace and advanced manufacturing industries. It will also house programs like welding and precision machining.
The complex will house the new cohort of Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education students.
'The Leidos Advanced Training Complex represents a transformative investment in workforce education and regional economic growth,' said Dr. Sims. 'This state-of-the-art facility will allow us to expand training opportunities in high-demand industries such as precision machining and welding, preparing our students for the careers of tomorrow while strengthening the talent pipeline for our local and national partners. I want to thank our state elected officials, the Alabama Community College System, and Leidos for supporting this transformative project.'
The complex was marked as a key initiative through the Alabama Community College System's ASPIRE 2030 plan. It was made possible by a statewide bond issue passed by the state legislature in 2020 to assist with facility upgrades and new construction.

'The facility here will effectively serve Drake State students and North Alabama for a long time,' said ACCS Chancellor Jimmy Baker. 'We are in the business of making life better for everyone. It's our job and mission to make sure every area of this state has the resources needed to provide training and support economic development. The innovation and talent that will be produced at this training complex will be among the best in the state.'
Leidos announced a $1.75 million donation to Drake State in November 2024. The donation went toward the college's advanced manufacturing and IT programs, student apprenticeships, campus technical and infrastructure upgrades, a new scholarship endowment and faculty development opportunities.
They broke ground on the building on June 9, 2023, and it features 10 laboratories, seven classrooms, multiple offices, a multipurpose room, specialized tools and storage areas, to name just a few new features.

Will JPMorgan take a bigger bite of Apple?

This story was originally published on Payments Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Payments Dive newsletter. Banking giant JPMorgan Chase may have more than just cards in mind if it's bidding to take over tech behemoth Apple's credit card portfolio. The nation's largest bank is likely looking to make inroads in servicing other Apple products, and market in other ways to Apple Card users as it tries to wrest control of the card portfolio from rival Goldman Sachs, according to consultants who follow the credit card industry. "This could be an opportunity for them to have a really compelling digital bank solution that appeals to the users of Apple Pay and the Apple card base [which is] more of a younger millennial target market," said Tom Bell, senior advisor at the consulting firm AlixPartners. David True, a partner at the consulting firm PayGility, agreed. 'All of a sudden, they'll have a much bigger customer base that they can pitch their products to,' he said. JPMorgan is in advanced talks to become Apple's new credit card partner, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 29, citing unnamed people familiar with the negotiations. No deal has been finalized, according to the Journal. Goldman Sachs holds about $20 billion in Apple Card balances, the newspaper reported. Spokespeople for Goldman Sachs, Apple and JPMorgan declined to comment. Apple's annual revenue from its card business amounts to $50 million, according to analysts at Baird. That's equal to a comparatively small portion of New York City-based JPMorgan's annual revenue, which was $177.56 billion for 2024, according to its annual report. But if JPMorgan succeeds in taking over the Cupertino, California-based tech giant's credit card business, it will have access to demographic data on millions of Apple Card users, True suggested. The bank could then use that information to market its banking products to a slew of potential new customers, he said. Apple has data on its customers that a new partner could use to better pitch new products and services, True explained. The tech company said in January 2024 that it had 12 million Apple Card users. "The Apple demographic is pretty well-known," True said. JPMorgan has "myriad products, and now they've got many millions more customers who have Apple iPhone demographics and they can see what else those customers would be interested in." JPMorgan is likely eyeing other parts of Apple's business, such as the digital wallet Apple Pay, said Richard Crone, chief executive of the payments advisory firm Crone Consulting. "Winning the Apple card portfolio would give Chase a back door to Apple Pay's wallet rails," he said. That's a potentially lucrative piece of business considering the hundreds of millions of people who use the digital wallet, Crone said. Apple Pay had an estimated 65.6 million users in the U.S. and 616 million globally in 2024, according to research from bank card issuer Capital One. Snap downgraded, Leidos upgraded: Wall Street's top analyst calls

The most talked about and market moving research calls around Wall Street are now in one place. Here are today's research calls that investors need to know, as compiled by The 5 Upgrades: Jefferies upgraded Leidos (LDOS) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $205, up from $185. The firm cites the potential for Leidos to benefit from Department of Defense priorities such as FAA, Maritime, and Golden Dome as well as the company's position as an "AI beneficiary" and upside from valuing Defense Systems on a Defense Tech multiple. Wells Fargo upgraded Incyte (INCY) to Overweight from Equal Weight with a price target of $89, up from $67. The firm believes the company's Phase 1 update for myelofibrosis in Q4 will be positive. Baird upgraded (MNDY) to Outperform from Neutral with a price target of $310, up from $280. The firm cites valuation for the upgrade following the recent pullback. Stephens upgraded BellRing Brands (BRBR) to Overweight from Equal Weight with a price target of $50, down from $68, after the company posted Q3 sales and EBITDA ahead of expectations. Wells Fargo upgraded Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) to Overweight from Equal Weight with an unchanged price target of $460. The firm views the pullback in the shares as providing a good entry point. Top 5 Downgrades: Citizens JMP downgraded Snap (SNAP) to Market Perform from Outperform without a price target following the Q2 report. Snap's advertising revenue grew just 4% year-over-year in the quarter, suggesting a loss of market share to other scaled ad platforms, the firm tells investors in a research note. UBS downgraded Gartner (IT) to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $270, down from $480. The firm cites the company's contract value growth for the downgrade. Jefferies downgraded CACI (CACI) to Hold from Buy with a price target of $535, down from $570. The firm forecasts 5% revenue growth for FY26, decelerating sharply from 9% organic growth in FY25, with further deceleration risk on EITaaS. Piper Sandler double downgraded Kemper (KMPR) to Underweight from Overweight with a price target of $50, down from $75. The company's Q2 results were below expectations as policy-in-force growth for the private passenger auto business decelerated along with a material unfavorable reserve development in its commercial insurance business, the firm tells investors in a research note. Canaccord downgraded Vivid Seats (SEAT) to Hold from Buy with a price target of $23, down from $80. The firm cites estimates meaningfully and downgraded the shares citing Vivid's competitive pressure and limited near-term catalysts. Top 5 Initiations: Goldman Sachs reinstated coverage of Shift4 Payments (FOUR) with a Buy rating and $104 price target, which offers 20% upside, following the close of the Global Blue acquisition. The firm views Shift4 as a top growth story and is constructive on the company's approach to acquisitions. Wells Fargo resumed coverage of Alcon (ALC) with an Equal Weight rating and $93 price target. The firm notes that the cataract market was likely weak in Q2 and potential growth acceleration from new product cycle may take longer to materialize. Raymond James initiated coverage of Palvella Therapeutics (PVLA) with an Outperform rating and $54 price target. Given the validated activity of rapamycin, proof-of-concept data in Phase 2, and the high unmet need and patient demand as seen in the over-enrolled SELVA Phase 3 study, QTORIN rapamycin has the potential for blockbuster launch in microcystic lymphatic malformations, with a second potential blockbuster in cutaneous venous malformations, the firm argues. H.C. Wainwright initiated coverage of Indivior (INDV) with a Buy rating and $27 price target. The firm sees a favorable risk/reward at current share levels, saying the durability of Sublocade revenue in the growing long-acting injectable market for opioid use disorder is underappreciated. Leerink initiated coverage of Xilio Therapeutics (XLO) with an Outperform rating and $72 price target. The firm believes Xilio is among the industry leaders of developing protease-masked biologics.
