Five nabbed, over RM4mil in untaxed ciggies, booze seized
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the raids were carried out by Bukit Aman's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence together with the Sarawak General Operations Force under Ops Taring 1 and 2.
In a statement, Azmi said the suspects, aged between 19 and 30, include four locals and one foreign national. They were detained at storage facilities and premises believed to be used for illegal distribution activities.
Among the items seized were three lorries, 31,740 litres of various types of alcohol, 280,000 sticks of white cigarettes and 6,000 sticks of clove cigarettes, all suspected to be untaxed, with a total estimated value of RM4.03mil.
Azmi said so far this year, 153 raids have been carried out nationwide by WCB/PSK, leading to 233 arrests and total seizures valued at over RM433mil, while urging the public to share information to help combat such crimes.- Bernama

Zara Qairina case: Takiyuddin questions need for inquest with probe still ongoing
KUALA LUMPUR: Questions have been raised why an inquest is being conducted before the police investigation into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir is completed. Opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said an inquest is usually held only after investigations are completed. "What if the findings of the inquest goes against the findings of the police investigation?" he asked. Takiyuddin said the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) appeared to have acted hostility when ordering the inquest. "Let the investigation finish first – if there is no conclusion, refer it to the magistrate and if the magistrate feels there is a need, only then can the inquest be held," he said. He then said it is peculiar why the police did not convince Zara Qairina's mother into requesting for an autopsy given the suspicious nature of the 13-year-old's death. Takiyuddin pointed out that Subsection 330 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) states that the police have a duty to inform a government medical officer of any suspicious deaths. "The question here is if Zara Qairina's mother understand the repercussions of not conducting a post-mortem examination. "The police must explain this (procedural) non-compliance by the police themselves," he said. On Aug 18, coroner Azreena Aziz announced that an inquest into Zara Qairina's death would take place on Sept 3, 4, 8 to 12, 17 to 19 and 22 to 30. Zara Qairina was found unconscious at a drain at 4am on July 16 near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. She was later pronounced dead at Hospital Queen Elizabeth on July 17. Her body was later exhumed for a post-mortem examination on Aug 10 and her body was reburied at the Tanjung Ubi Islamic Cemetery in Sipitang on Aug 11. On Aug 13, Bukit Aman revealed that there was procedural non-compliance by the police by failing to conduct a post-mortem examination.

Fahmi: Don't turn Zara Qairina's death into a populist cause
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil urged the public not to make the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir a populist cause. Fahmi was responding to public rallies and online calls for justice as National Day on Aug 31 approached. "Don't build a palace above a grave. Don't take advantage to popularise yourselves. We want justice and the law must take its course." He said Bukit Aman had taken over the probe and that it was investigating three officers over alleged procedural lapses during the initial investigation. Fahmi added that he wanted justice for Zara; Reserve Officers' Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died last month: and tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago. He also said bullies could face legal action. The Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code were amended in Parliament in December last year, and the new provisions came into force last month, strengthening the scope for prosecution.
