Lake regulars raise questions on absence of lifeguard at pool, lack of maintenance
"Poor maintenance, absence of a lifeguard, no check on whether people entering the pool are swimmers or not, low dissolved oxygen and high sedimentation with unwanted aquatic plants and weeds could have all combined to lead to lead to the young boy's tragic death," said environmentalist Somendra Mohan Ghosh, a regular at the Lake. "KMDA needs to address these issues to create a safer environment for pool users."
Some pointed out that that the condition of the public swimming pool had deteriorated over the years.
"The pool could have been better maintained. I visited the place nearly after 30 years on Sunday. Its condition has worsened," said Aparupa Saha, a Siliguri resident, who used to live in Dhakuria.
"Earlier, a lifeguard would be posted at the public pool. But now, no one, other than regular swimmers in the pool, is there to watch out for the others in the water. The boy could have been saved had there been a lifeguard," a Lake regular said.

"Also, the pool is filled with algae and weeds, which have not been cleaned."
Ghosh demanded regular maintenance and inspection, along with proper supervision by lifesavers. "Those coming for a swim should meet the qualifications required," Ghosh said.
KMDA authorities conceded that there had been no lifeguard to keep a constant watch on the pool for the past few years. "The earlier lifeguard's tenure ended in 2017-18. After the Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) merged with KMDA, no new post for a lifesaver or lifeguard was created. It is a policy matter, which has to be decided by the higher authorities," a KMDA official said. "At the same time, it's practically impossible to find out if each and everyone entering the pool knows how to swim or not.
" The official claimed they had been conducting regular clean-up of the water body. "Some measures will be taken after a discussion," said a govt official.

3 electrocuted in 2 accidents during Ganeshotsav prep in city
Hyderabad: Three men died in two electrocution accidents during Ganeshotsav preparations in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The twin tragedy came a day after five persons were electrocuted during a Janmashtami chariot procession in Ramanthapur late Sunday. In Bandlaguda, two men — tractor driver Dhoni alias Toni (19) and Vikas (21), a labourer — were electrocuted and their associate, Akhil (23), was injured when the Ganesh idol they were transporting in a tractor-trolley came in contact with a high-tension power line on Tuesday. The injured man was hospitalised. According to Bandlaguda police, about 15 youths from Chandrapuram near Puranapul had gone to Laxmiguda in Jalpally to bring a 22-ft Ganesh idol for installation at their pandal under Hussainialam police station limits. The idol was loaded onto a tractor-trolley driven by Dhoni. There were about 15 youngsters in the trolley at the time of the incident. Three of them, including the driver, suffered a jolt and collapsed. Dhoni and Vikas were declared dead at a nearby hospital," said Bandlaguda inspector R Devender. Following the incident, police shifted the idol back to Laxmiguda. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo A case under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing death due to negligence) was registered against the organiser of the pandal and others. Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials inspected the site on Tuesday and clarified that the idol had not touched the line directly. "There is a 33 kV high-tension line at 23 feet above the road, which means there would have been a gap of about one foot between the idol and the wires. We suspect induction shock. The idol wrapped in a plastic sheet came very close, and those who were in contact might have suffered a jolt. Witnesses said there were sparks, but the line did not trip since there was no direct contact," said TGSPDCL superintending engineer Devarakonda Sreeram Mohan. In the second accident, 18-year-old Ramcharan, a labourer, was setting up a Ganesh pandal in Amberpet late Monday when he accidentally touched an overhead electricity line with a bamboo stick while standing on the pandal structure. "The bamboo was raw, and Ramcharan suffered a jolt. He fell 15ft below, sustaining a severe head injury. Locals rushed him to a private hospital in Kacheguda. He succumbed during treatment on Tuesday evening," Amberpet inspector T Kiran Kumar said. Police registered a case under BNSS Section 194 (suspicious death) based on a complaint from Ramcharan's kin and sent the body for post-mortem. Cops relax loudspeaker timings for festivals, but put volume cap
Nagpur: The Nagpur city police announced exemptions for extended loudspeaker use from 6am to midnight on August 27 (Ganesh Chaturthi), August 29 (Gauri Visarjan), September 5 (Eid-e-Milad), and September 6 (Anant Chaturdashi). "These exemptions, however, are strictly conditional on compliance with the high court's noise pollution guidelines," said CP Ravinder Singal. According to the high court's orders, permissible sound levels are capped at 55 decibels in residential areas and 50 decibels in silence zones, such as areas near hospitals, schools, colleges, and courts. The use of loudspeakers and musical instruments require prior permission and are generally allowed only between 6am and 10pm, except on exempted days. During processions, organisers must comply with these limits, particularly in silence zones, and avoid using loudspeakers or raising slogans near religious places during prayer times, cops said. Violators face fines, equipment seizure, and legal action under the Maharashtra Police Act and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. The Bombay high court's January 2025 ruling, declaring loudspeakers non-essential to religious practices, has bolstered enforcement measures. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The police have urged Ganesh Mandals to utilise sound-measuring apps to monitor decibel levels and avoid penalties, emphasising the need for responsible celebration to maintain public tranquillity. The police stations, under zonal DCPs, have already started organising meetings with the Ganesh mandals to inform about the noise decibel guidelines, traffic norms, and other rules to be followed. As the Ganeshotsav approaches, the Nagpur city police have intensified efforts to enforce noise pollution regulations, aligning with the high court's directives. The police have mandated strict adherence to noise limits for loudspeakers and musical instruments. Last year, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) processed 1,246 permission applications for Ganeshotsav, approving 917 and rejecting 329 due to non-compliance. This year, 305 Ganesh Mandals have applied for permissions so far. The city police have also stepped-up anti-crime measures, especially preventive actions. Over the past fifteen days, preventive action was taken against 127 criminals to ensure law and order during the festive season. Man kills wife with axe in Khandwa, arrested
Indore: A man allegedly killed his wife with an axe after she refused to sleep with him while they were visiting his family in Kudalda village in Khandwa district late on Monday night. The man, Dharmendra, was found sitting next to his wife's body when he was arrested by the police. The victim was identified as Malti. According to her sister-in-law, Gayatri, the couple, who usually resided in Singot, had come to the village for Raksha Bandhan. They stayed on for funeral and other rituals of Dharmendra's elder brother, Tarachand, who had died on August 15. Gayatri said that late on Monday night, Dharmendra asked Malti to come to their own house to sleep. Malti refused, saying that she would sleep on a mat with the other family members, including her son and Gayatri. While the family was asleep, Dharmendra returned and allegedly struck Malti twice with an axe near her ear and neck. Her screams woke up Gayatri but by the time she could react, Malti had died. Gayatri said that Dharmendra showed no signs of remorse and even sat next to Malti's body while their eight-year-old son cried. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo When family members confronted him, he admitted to the crime, saying he killed Malti due to their argument.
