West Bengal at bottom of performance on solid waste management
NEW DELHI: West Bengal has recorded the lowest performance in solid waste processing under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, with just eight percent of its daily waste being treated.
The state's progress has dropped by two percent in four years. It was treating 10 percent of the garbage produced each day in 2021, when the second edition of the mission was launched.
According to data available on the SBM-U dashboard, solid waste processing in Nagaland and Mizoram are still in their infancy. Nagaland is processing just one percent of its daily waste while the latter's performance is nil.
The dashboard states West Bengal generates 7,875.55 tonnes per day (TPD) of solid waste daily but processes only 588.65 TDP. This slow pace of progress was recently flagged during a review meeting held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), which expressed concern over the state's inability to scale up its solid waste treatment capacity.
There is decline in door-to-door garbage collection.
In 2021, 100 percent door-to-door collection was reported in 2,527 out of 2,939 municipal wards. However, the latest figures show a drop, with 2,317 out of 3,008 wards currently reporting full coverage.
Arunachal Pradesh and Bihar have also reported poor waste processing rates. The latest figures show that Arunachal Pradesh generates 177.78 TPD and processes just 22 percent of it. In 2021, the state was treating 25 percent of the total waste generated on a daily basis. Bihar, with a daily generation of 6,638.19 TPD, processes only 32 percent. No immediate response on performance of states from the ministry was available.
In contrast, several states and union territories have achieved remarkable success. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli have reported 100 percent daily processing of solid waste.

UPI's acceptance in the world has also increased and it is live in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, France, Mauritius, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. India also stands as the world's cheapest mobile data provider, with more than 94 crore broadband connections and more than 120 crore telephone subscribers. A total of 2.18 lakh gram panchayats have been connected through optical fibre networks under the Bharat Net scheme and 6.92 lakh km of fibre cable has been laid. The Union Government has also showcased interest in Artificial Intelligence with three AI Centres of Excellence to be set up in top educational institutions. India is also working on the development of AI models such as BharatGen, Sarvam-1, Chitralekha and Hanooman's Everest 1.0. 'Our resolve to take PM Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission to every street': Uttarakhand CM Dhami announces cleanliness drive
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced an innovative initiative under which, wherever he goes on tour or where he stays overnight, a cleanliness campaign will be run compulsorily adding that the drive will help in spreading the message of "social awarness" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission to every street and village in the state. Chief Minister Dhami has given strict instructions to all municipal bodies and gram panchayats, including the District Magistrates, to take this initiative in mission mode and give priority to cleanliness at the local level. He has also appealed to common citizens, youth, and voluntary organisations to participate enthusiastically in this campaign. The Chief Minister said that it is our resolve to take Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission to every village and every street. "Wherever I go or stay overnight, a pledge of cleanliness will be taken there. This is not just cleanliness, but a movement of social awareness." In addition, the Chief Minister also made it clear to the District Magistrates that he could suddenly reach any Tehsil Diwas in the state to assess the ground-level functioning of the administration and ensure a quick solution to public problems. The formation of the Uttarakhand State Allied and Healthcare Council has been approved under the National Allied and Healthcare Professions Commission Act 2021. The cabinet has decided to operate the fund from the cess on foreign liquor/beer under the Chief Minister's Women and Child Multipurpose Assistance Fund (Corpus Fund). It will be used for assistance in schemes run for women and children, the operation of innovative schemes, and support to orphaned children, destitute people, and old women in disaster.
