Arunachal town wins Swachh Survekshan award
Agency: PTI Itanagar, Jul 17 (PTI) Jairampur town in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district has been declared a 'Promising Swachh Shehar' in the government's annual cleanliness survey, an official said on Thursday. The 'Swachh Survekshan' awards were presented by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal during a ceremony in New Delhi in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries. State Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja and Urban Affairs Commissioner Vivek Pandey received the award on behalf of the state, an official release said here. The recognition is a testament to the relentless work of Jairampur's urban local body, sanitation workers, and the active participation of residents, it said. It also marks a proud moment for the state's urban development efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U), the release said. Ahmedabad was named the cleanest big city, followed by Bhopal and Lucknow in the survey, even as Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai and Vijayawada were elevated to a newly formed 'Super Swachh League Cities' category for demonstrating exceptional performance in sanitation. Following the awards ceremony, a meeting of urban development ministers was held in the national capital where Raja urged the Centre to revise funding policies for hilly and northeastern states. He recommended lowering the population eligibility criteria to 5,000 for small towns and district headquarters, citing the exclusion of many deserving areas under current per capita-based models like SBM-U and AMRUT, it said. Noting that Arunachal Pradesh has over 80 per cent forest cover, Raja emphasised the need for equitable urban development in frontier regions. He also called for a separate, flexible funding mechanism for the northeast, the release said. Mysuru in the ‘Super Swachh League' among clean cities
The city has performed well in the clean city rankings, within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh, announced on Thursday. It made its way to the 'Super Swachh League' which is a newly introduced category under the Swachh Survekshan framework of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (SBM-U). The 'Super Swachh League' or SSL includes only those cities that have consistently demonstrated top performance in past Swachh Survekshan editions. Other cities within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh (as per 2011 census) that are included under SSL cities are Chandigarh, Noida, Ujjain, Gandhinagar, and Guntur. Though Mysuru is reckoned to be ranked 3rd under SSL cities, the MCC authorities said there is no ranking for SSL cities but only criteria for their inclusion is consistently high performance. In 2023, Mysuru had slid to national ranking of 27thwhich had drawn widespread flak from the citizens. The authorities from the Mysuru City Corporation authorities said that Mysuru, known for its consistent excellence in urban cleanliness, has once again made the city proud by performing exceptionally well in the Swachh Super League 2024-25, a initiative under the Swachh Survekshan conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). It is essentially a prestige league of cities that have consistently performed well in the Swachh Survekshan rankings over the years. The idea is to create a 'Champions League' environment where the best cities compete with each other to achieve excellence beyond compliance, according to the authorities. ''The inclusion of Mysuru among SSL cities reflects the dedicated efforts of MCC, sanitation workers, and citizens in upholding the city's legacy of cleanliness, sustainability, and public participation,' said the authorities. The rankings and survey, said the authorities, is designed to encourage healthy competition among top-performing cities and further shore up the standards in urban cleanliness, sanitation, and waste management. Mrthyunjaya, nodal officer of MCC for Swachh Survekshan, said that the along with senior officials from the Urban Development Department and the MCC, a few pourakarmikas too were in Delhi for the presentation of awards. In all, 4,589 urban local bodies were assessed and out of 12,500 marks, 80 per cent was allocated for data provided by ULBs, documents assessment, and field assessment. Remaining 2,500 marks was for garbage free cities (GFC) ratings, Open Defecation Free, processing, door to door segregation, etc. A few other cities in Karnataka within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh, and are not in the SSL category, have been ranked. This includes Davangere with a national ranking of 32, Hubli-Dharwad is ranked 34, Kalaburgi (57), Belagavi (72), Bellary (73), Shivamogga (81), Bijapur (83), Mangaluru (86), Tumakuru (92). BBMP is ranked 36th among cities with a population of more than 10 lakh.
