Mysuru in the ‘Super Swachh League' among clean cities

The city has performed well in the clean city rankings, within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh, announced on Thursday. It made its way to the 'Super Swachh League' which is a newly introduced category under the Swachh Survekshan framework of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (SBM-U).
The 'Super Swachh League' or SSL includes only those cities that have consistently demonstrated top performance in past Swachh Survekshan editions.
Other cities within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh (as per 2011 census) that are included under SSL cities are Chandigarh, Noida, Ujjain, Gandhinagar, and Guntur.
Though Mysuru is reckoned to be ranked 3rd under SSL cities, the MCC authorities said there is no ranking for SSL cities but only criteria for their inclusion is consistently high performance. In 2023, Mysuru had slid to national ranking of 27thwhich had drawn widespread flak from the citizens.
The authorities from the Mysuru City Corporation authorities said that Mysuru, known for its consistent excellence in urban cleanliness, has once again made the city proud by performing exceptionally well in the Swachh Super League 2024-25, a initiative under the Swachh Survekshan conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
It is essentially a prestige league of cities that have consistently performed well in the Swachh Survekshan rankings over the years. The idea is to create a 'Champions League' environment where the best cities compete with each other to achieve excellence beyond compliance, according to the authorities.
''The inclusion of Mysuru among SSL cities reflects the dedicated efforts of MCC, sanitation workers, and citizens in upholding the city's legacy of cleanliness, sustainability, and public participation,' said the authorities.
The rankings and survey, said the authorities, is designed to encourage healthy competition among top-performing cities and further shore up the standards in urban cleanliness, sanitation, and waste management.
Mrthyunjaya, nodal officer of MCC for Swachh Survekshan, said that the along with senior officials from the Urban Development Department and the MCC, a few pourakarmikas too were in Delhi for the presentation of awards.
In all, 4,589 urban local bodies were assessed and out of 12,500 marks, 80 per cent was allocated for data provided by ULBs, documents assessment, and field assessment. Remaining 2,500 marks was for garbage free cities (GFC) ratings, Open Defecation Free, processing, door to door segregation, etc.
A few other cities in Karnataka within the population range of 3 lakh to 10 lakh, and are not in the SSL category, have been ranked. This includes Davangere with a national ranking of 32, Hubli-Dharwad is ranked 34, Kalaburgi (57), Belagavi (72), Bellary (73), Shivamogga (81), Bijapur (83), Mangaluru (86), Tumakuru (92). BBMP is ranked 36th among cities with a population of more than 10 lakh.
