Mysore MP promises swift resolution of logistics park issues

Mysuru: Mysore MP Yaduveer Wadiyar on Tuesday said he will take swift action to address the operational challenges faced by the Multi Modal Logistics Park, an inland container depot in Kadakola, which was developed by Container Corporation of India (CONCOR). The depot, inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024, was built at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore but remained underutilised due to the absence of a customs clearance facility. Suresh Jain, general secretary of the micro, small and medium enterprises council, Mysuru, highlighted the issue, stating, "Without a customs clearance facility, industries are forced to rely on ports in Chennai, Mangaluru, or Kochi, rendering the depot idle." Responding to the concerns, Yaduveer told reporters that he was unaware of this issue. "I will work to resolve it at the earliest," he said. Meanwhile, Yaduveer announced plans to commemorate Mysuru Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar's birth anniversary on Wednesday, uniquely by making the Mysuru Palace plastic-free. "We will install a water vending machine on the palace premises. This will end the problem of water bottle menace," he said. "It is our duty to support the civic workers who serve the society. Our aim is to provide ration for a month," he said. Addressing the issue of Kamal Haasan's controversial statement, which was perceived as anti-Kannada, Yaduveer stated that only the public can teach a lesson by boycotting the actor's films until he apologises. "Languages naturally influence one another, but claiming one language gave birth to another is unacceptable," he remarked. The MP also called on the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and police to devise a strategy to prevent miscreants from defacing statues in the city, emphasising the need to protect public monuments.

Mysuru civic body to use women SHGs to collect property tax

MYSURU : Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is set to use the services of women self-help groups (SHGs) to collect property tax and water dues from defaulters. Among the 20 women SHGs that applied for the job, the civic body has finalised eight groups. MCC has provided the necessary training to them and will soon give permission to these groups to start collecting taxes. Only women self-help groups registered under the DAY-NULM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission) scheme, who have digital literacy, computer knowledge, education and qualifications, were selected and trained. MCC will give a 5 percent commission of the amount collected from property tax and water cess payers to the SHGs. The women will not only visit door-to-door for the collection of the water and property cess but also help them in pay via both online and offline after calculating the amount. Among the 8 SHGs that were finalised in all the 65 ward limits, five of them will collect property tax and the rest the water cess. The following were the 5 SHGs selected for the collection of property tax: Chamundeshwari Women SHG, Alanahalli; Daneshwari Women SHG, Vidyaranyapuram; Sharathy of Saraswathipuram; Angalaparameshwari of Janatha Colony; and Arora Women SHG of Agrahara. Meanwhile, Spoorthy Women SHG of Azeezsait Nagar, Mallige of Kuvempu Nagar and Sanjeevini Women SHG of Rajiv Nagar were entrusted with the responsibility of collecting water cess. MCC also selected another six women self-help groups in the city for maintaining parks after cancelling the contract system of awarding contracts to contractors and agencies for its maintenance. They are Annapoorneshwari, Lakshmi Saraswathi, Sammathi, Ya Abeeb, Gulshan and Noor-like women self-help group organisation members of the city. MCC will pay Rs 2 to 10 lakh for the maintenance of parks for each organisation. Speaking to TOI, MCC deputy commissioner (revenue) Somashekhar Jigani said MCC has roped in the services of women self-groups to achieve 100 percent tax collection, as property tax and water cess are the two major sources of its revenue. This initiative also helps SHGs to earn revenue, he said.

MCC questioned for levying property tax at twice the standard rate for building bylaw violations

The current practice of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) imposing property tax at twice the standard rate for building bylaw violations has come under criticism. Former mayor Sandesh Swamy has stated that imposition of property tax at twice the standard rate in cases where there is a violation of the building bylaw was not legally tenable. He has written to the MCC stating that double taxation can be levied on owners who have constructed residential or commercial buildings in violation of approved plans only for the first year. 'From the second year onward, only the regular prescribed tax should be collected,' Mr. Sandesh Swamy said, terming the current practice of officials of levying tax at double the rate for every year as wrong. 'Officials must take seriously the State gazette notification that came into effect in 2024, which amended the Karnataka Municipalities Acts of 1964 and 1976,' he said. The MCC also came in for flak for imposing additional burden on property owners who pay taxes regularly and said there were many government buildings within the MCC limits and no property tax was being levied on them. 'The MCC should initiate measures to regularly collect taxes from government offices as this would increase the municipality's revenue,' said Mr. Sandesh Swamy. On the need to increase revenue generated through property tax, the former mayor said there were tens of thousands of commercial establishments in Mysuru including shops and business fronts of which only about 17,000 have obtained trade licences. The MCC revenue could be further augmented if a drive was conducted to issue trade licence to every business establishment in the city, he added. Though the MCC was providing civic amenities to many revenue layouts in the city, it was not collecting property tax, Mr. Sandesh Swamy said, underlining the imperatives of widening the tax net and bringing all revenue layouts under it to mobilise additional resources. Incidentally, the MCC budget for 2025-26 expects ₹252.60 crore to be collected by way of property tax.

Tree felling in Mysuru: inquiry clears officials of wrongdoing

An official inquiry ordered by the Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre into the felling of 40 trees on the Hyder Ali Road in Mysuru, has cleared the officials of any wrongdoing. A copy of the report, submitted on May 14, 2025, and accessed by The Hindu, states that 'in summary, for the purpose of widening Hyder Ali Road in Mysuru from Kaalikamba Temple to SP Office Circle over a length of 360 meters and width of 30 meters, permission was granted under Section 8(3) of the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act, 1976, for felling 40 government trees (38 Peltophorum pterocarpum, one Samanea saman, and one Vachellia nilotica). This action by the Forest Department does not violate any regulations', says the report in conclusion. A perusal of the report indicates that the focus of the inquiry was whether the officials adhered to the legal requirements to be complied with, while according permission for tree-felling and whether the user agency, in this case the Mysuru City Corporation, met all provisions under the law, including making the requisite payment. Sources said that the inquiry did not address the issue raised by the Minister whether tree-felling was warranted and whether the road widening was required at all. The Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Planning and Recruitment), Bengaluru, visited Mysuru on April 22, 2025, to conduct an on-site investigation and review after consulting the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mysuru Territorial Division. The permission for tree-felling was sought on June 15, 2024, and the local officials, including the range forest officer, conducted a mahazar, marked the tree identified for felling on both sides of the road, and submitted the report to Deputy Conservator of Forests on July 22, 2024. The species include 38 Peltophorum pterocarpum, one Samanea saman (Rain Tree), and one Vachellia nilotica (Gobli Tree) and on January 15, 2025, the Assistant Conservator of Forests submitted a valuation report. A demand notice was issued seeking a payment of ₹7,76,223 to the government, on payment of which permission to fell the trees were issued, as per the report. But the moot point raised by environmentalists, whether the traffic density merited road-widening, exploring other options like declaring the stretch as a one-way, etc. was not inquired into. Each of the tree was over 40 years old and their role in carbon sequestration was immense. Though the Forest Department has claimed that 10 saplings will be planted for every tree felled to compensate, their survival rates are questionable, according to activists.

MCC to fine contractors for blocking tree percolation space

Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is contemplating imposing a heavy fine on individuals for blocking the percolation space around trees while carrying out any construction work . Even contractors are being directed to rectify the wrongs. MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif told TOI that the MCC council decided to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 for any violations in this regard. This comes after activists voiced their concern about protecting trees within Mysuru city and following directives from the Green Tribunal . The commissioner said a new clause is being added to the work orders sanctioned to contractors to ensure adequate percolation space is left around the trees while executing civil projects. Regarding previous projects, contractors are being asked to make corrections to ensure space is left around trees for water absorption, Tanveer Asif explained. Meanwhile, in its second correspondence, Mysuru forest officials have also written to the authorities of the MCC, asking them to ensure that adequate space is left around trees for water absorption while carrying out developmental works, including road asphalt, laying of footpaths, and construction of stormwater drainage. The forest department has identified eight roads, including Vinobha Road, Nelson Mandela Road, Sayyajirao Road, and Bengaluru Nilgiri Road, where trees have been left with inadequate spaces. On these stretches, contractors failed to maintain the mandated one-metre percolation space around every tree. According to foresters, they observed that in about 12 kms within Mysuru city where development works were carried out, no space was left around trees. The forest department claims that civic authorities were informed about it and asked to instruct field staff to take immediate corrective action. Deputy conservator of forests (territorial) KN Basavaraj said that in the jurisdiction of MCC, it was observed that during the execution of development works related to pedestrian pathways, drainage, and other infrastructure development projects, the growth of trees was hindered in some areas by not leaving adequate percolation space around them. The National Green Tribunal, in the case of Sahil Garg v/s State of Punjab & others, issued certain directives regarding the protection of trees during such infrastructure development works. Accordingly, the forest department conducted an inspection to assess the impact of ongoing projects on trees within the MCC limits and found that at eight locations, roads were constructed without providing at least one metre of space around trees for rainwater absorption. The DCF told TOI that the commissioner of MCC was informed about it, and the corporation authorities assured to rectify and take necessary measures for the protection of trees. *** CAPTION time to act: The forest department conducted an inspection and found that at eight locations, roads were constructed without providing at least one metre of space around trees for rainwater absorption Box Trees choked at 8 locations - Bengaluru-Nilgiri Road (Five-light Circle to Fountain Circle) - Millennium Circle and KR Hospital - Dewans Road - Vinobha Road - Irwin Road - Bogadi Road - Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Circle to Anikethana Road - Vishwamanava Double Road
