GTD urges govt to fulfil demands of MCC employees

Time of India09-07-2025
Mysuru: Former minister and JD(S) MLA GT Devegowda on Wednesday urged the state govt to fulfil the demands of the employees of the Mysuru City Corporation.
He asked the govt to fulfil the demands of pourakarmikas, civic workers in various divisions of civic bodies, including UGD, drivers, and others on priority.
He was speaking after extending support and participating in an indefinite strike undertaken by members of Mysuru City Corporation Pourakarmika Federation members held outside the office of MCC in the city.
As the cleanliness and removal of garbage across the city will aggravate if the pourakarmikas continue their protest, he appealed to the govt to respond immediately to their demands. Chief minister Siddaramaiah, DyCM DK Shivakumar, and state urban development minister Byrathi Suresh must consider their demands, he said.
Welcoming Siddaramaiah's announcement of direct recruitment of pourakarmikas working in all civic bodies, the MLA also asked the govt to set right the disparity in wages as well as bring all civic workers, including those working in underground drainage work, drivers, and other workers involved in the disposal of waste activities in civic bodies, under the direct recruitment process.
The state govt must also extend govt benefits, including KGID, insurance cover, and other facilities for all pourakarmikas recruited under the direct payment system in line with its employees.
Meanwhile, JD(S) MLA K Vivekananda also extended his support and participated in the protest.

Govt to set up task force for next-generation reforms, says PM Modi

The government will set up a task force for the next-generation reforms aimed at overhauling laws, rules, and procedures governing economic activity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day address on Friday. The Prime Minister said the task force would complete its work within a set time frame. 'Current rules, laws, policies, and procedures must be re-drafted to suit the 21st century, fit the global environment, and align with the vision of making Bharat a developed nation by 2047,' Modi said. As a result of these reforms, the Prime Minister said, start-ups, small and cottage industries, and entrepreneurs would see a significant reduction in compliance costs. Changes in logistics and systems would also give a major advantage in the field of exports. 'These reforms will give courage to all those who wish to shape their future,' he added. He noted that the government had already abolished more than 40,000 unnecessary compliances and 1,500 outdated laws, and, in the latest parliamentary session, over 280 provisions were removed. During his address, the Prime Minister said that global rating agencies constantly praised India, expressing growing confidence in the Indian economy. 'Today the entire world is confident about India's economy and economic condition. Amid so much instability, India's financial discipline, the energy of India's finance, remains a ray of hope,' he said. On Thursday, S&P Global Ratings raised India's long-term sovereign credit rating by a notch to 'BBB' from the lowest investment grade of 'BBB-' with a stable outlook. The upgrade came after a gap of 18 years, citing the country's economic resilience, sustained fiscal consolidation, and improved quality of public spending. Modi also stressed that India's inflation was under control, foreign exchange reserves were healthy, and macroeconomic indicators remained strong. 'We are making new efforts in this direction so that the benefits of this growing economy reach the poor of my country, the farmers of my country, the women power of my country, the middle class of my country, and it becomes a source of strength for the development of my country,' he said in his Independence Day speech.

Karnataka faces discrimination in distribution of resources from Centre: CM Siddaramaiah

BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister on Friday said that the state is facing discrimination in the distribution of resources from the Centre. He also said that there is growing concern that Constitutional bodies like the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and others are not working to uphold the true values of democracy and cooperative federalism as enshrined in the Constitution. He said, every responsible citizen must raise their voice in this regard. The Chief Minister made these observations while delivering his address at the 79th Independence Day celebrations here. Siddaramaiah said his government has built its own development model, which is widely recognised as the "Karnataka Model of Development", and that its 'guarantee schemes' have got global recognition. "The Basavadi Sharanas of the 12th century firmly believed that one must live by one's word. Guided by this principle, our government has built its own development model, now widely recognised as the Karnataka Model of Development," he said. "It is a matter of pride that even Philemon Yang, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, visited Karnataka and wholeheartedly praised our Guarantee Schemes, giving them global recognition," he added. Noting that surveys by leading national institutions have revealed a stark truth that the wealthiest 10 per cent of our population hold 80 per cent of the nation's wealth, yet they contribute only about 3 per cent of the GST collected, he said, the remaining 90 per cent ordinary people who work daily for food and clothing shoulder nearly 97 per cent of GST payments. "How can any economy sustain itself under such circumstances? How can we fulfil the spirit of our Constitution? How can we reduce this growing inequality? These questions troubled us deeply. It is with the intention of finding answers to these questions that we launched the Guarantee Schemes and other welfare programmes," he added.
