Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga was present at the occasion, along with Prof. Lalnilawma, Minister of Rural Development, and H. Ginzalal, Technical Adviser to the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction at the new initiative under the National Bamboo Mission, describing it as a major development in bamboo-based industrial activity. He emphasized that bamboo is a valuable resource in Mizoram, one that can be utilized efficiently and sustainably. With the advancement in bamboo processing, it can become a key driver of the local economy and create a significant number of jobs.
He noted that charcoal is mostly produced from wood, and it takes years for trees to regenerate once harvested. However, bamboo regenerates fully within one to two years, and because of this rapid growth cycle and resilience, bamboo-based charcoal production is much more sustainable. He asserted that
bamboo charcoal production
will help protect our forests and natural environment.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of proper operation and maintenance of the factory and processing plants. He urged workers to manage the new units efficiently and responsibly to ensure their long-term success.
Lalsawivunga remarked that this marks a new era in bamboo processing in Mizoram. He noted the state is rich in bamboo resources and that proper utilization of these resources will continue in a sustainable manner.
Director of Horticulture and Missions Director of the State Bamboo Mission, C. H. Lalmuanpuia, presented a technical report. He stated that the Bamboo Treatment & Seasoning Plant is a crucial facility for increasing the utility and durability of bamboo, with the potential lifespan of treated bamboo reaching up to 50 years. The
Bamboo Depot and Godown
serve as essential storage and supply units.
The Activated Charcoal Unit can produce three tonnes of charcoal per day, aiming for an annual output of around 900 tonnes. Approximately 670 bamboo culms are required daily for operation. Additionally, around 100 litres of vinegar will be produced each day as a byproduct, and following proper distillation, up to 54 litres of refined vinegar can be extracted daily.
Three bamboo clusters — at Chhingchhip, Baktawng, and Saiphal villages — have already been established to supply bamboo to these units.
The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) is providing technical support for these projects, and they will also be conducting training programs to ensure effective implementation and management.

Fish boom: Local entrepreneurs thrive as output triples in state
Patna: Women and small-scale entrepreneurs in Bihar are reaping the benefits of the state's fisheries initiatives with fish production tripling over the past two decades. Jyotsna Singh from Pura village in Samastipur district has become self-reliant through fish seed production and now employs 20 people. She received a grant of Rs15 lakh in 2023 from the fisheries department to set up a hatchery, which proved highly successful. Similarly, Laxmi Sahni, Sheela Devi, Pramod Kumar Sahni, Rani Kumari and Seeti Devi from Raipur village in Sarairanjan block are engaged in fish farming over approximately eight hectares. They produce 10-15 tonnes of fish annually, earning Rs13 to Rs18 lakh. A state govt report released on Friday revealed that fish production in Bihar rose from 2.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2005 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24, a threefold increase over 19 years. Officials said this growth was driven by several schemes under the state's agriculture road map, including the Chief Minister Integrated Wetland Development Scheme, Reservoir Fisheries Development Scheme, Private Pond Renovation Scheme, the River Restoration Programme and the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. After Dreamliner Crash, Insurance Cost May Raise Airfare By 2-5%
New Delhi: The aviation insurance industry may consider raising the premium paid by airlines in the next cycle, following the crash of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad. A mix of expanding exposure to international routes, regulatory scrutiny, and high-value claims is expected to make the price of premium more expensive than it is now. An expert told NDTV Profit if the aviation industry passes on the rising cost of insurance premium to consumers, airfare may see a rise of up to 2 to 5 per cent. Air India and IndiGo have already renewed their policies for the year, said Sourav Biswas, business head - aviation insurance at Alliance Insurance Brokers. However, there could be a marked rise in premiums in the next billing cycle, Mr Biswas said. The loss of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner along with the deaths of 241 people who were on board and 10 at the doctors' hostel where the plane crashed comes at a time when a multi-billion-dollar court ruling in the UK ordered global reinsurers to compensate for aircraft seized by Russia due to geopolitical tension. The timing of the UK court order and the crash, one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India, would add more strain on reinsurers who deal with hull insurance, which covers the aircraft itself, and liability insurance, which includes both passenger legal liability and third-party liability. The sum total of all these factors and India being one of the fastest growing markets for the aviation industry will likely raise the premiums. India's aviation industry's insurance premiums have been around Rs 1,000 crore historically, but it may get disrupted and the figure could change drastically. Aviation insurance for big airlines such as Air India are given on a fleet basis and reinsured across global markets like London and New York, said Narendra Bharindwal, President, Insurance Brokers Association of India. A single insurer does not take responsibility for the entire risk coverage; it is distributed among global reinsurers, with shares ranging from 1.5 per cent to 2 per cent. A lead reinsurer usually takes up to 15 per cent risk. "This incident, along with others in recent months, will likely result in a hardening of the aviation insurance market, not just for the airline involved, but across the entire aviation sector," Mr Bharindwal said. The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) today announced immediate measures to ease the financial burden on the families of those who died in the plane crash. The insurer said that it would expedite claim settlements and offer concessions to support the affected families.
