Fish boom: Local entrepreneurs thrive as output triples in state
Jyotsna Singh from Pura village in Samastipur district has become self-reliant through fish seed production and now employs 20 people.
She received a grant of Rs15 lakh in 2023 from the fisheries department to set up a hatchery, which proved highly successful.
Similarly, Laxmi Sahni, Sheela Devi, Pramod Kumar Sahni, Rani Kumari and Seeti Devi from Raipur village in Sarairanjan block are engaged in fish farming over approximately eight hectares. They produce 10-15 tonnes of fish annually, earning Rs13 to Rs18 lakh.
A state govt report released on Friday revealed that fish production in Bihar rose from 2.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2005 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24, a threefold increase over 19 years.
Officials said this growth was driven by several schemes under the state's agriculture road map, including the Chief Minister Integrated Wetland Development Scheme, Reservoir Fisheries Development Scheme, Private Pond Renovation Scheme, the River Restoration Programme and the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
Under the Wetland Development Scheme, 461 hectares have been converted for fish farming.

No toll plaza at Pachgaon if underpass not built: Locals
Gurgaon: Fresh uncertainty looms over the long-delayed relocation of the Kherki Daula toll plaza. A mahapanchayat has resolved that work on the proposed toll plaza at Pachgaon would not be allowed to proceed until construction of a promised underpass begins. The meeting came just days after locals halted work at the Pachgaon site on Thursday, accusing authorities of going back on earlier commitments. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon According to villagers, the toll plaza would severely affect local traffic movement if built without an alternative crossing. "We were first promised a flyover and later an underpass, but nothing has been delivered. More than 63 villages are being affected by this delay. Our stand is clear — the underpass must be built first. Only after that will we allow toll work to move forward," said Hoshiyar Singh Subedaar from Kharkhari village, under whose leadership more than 60 villages were represented at the gathering, which was held on Sunday. "This is one of the key links connecting Rohtak to Jamalpur to Tauru and Nuh. The crossing here is accident-prone and a serious safety hazard," Subedaar told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Saw Two Bikers Mocking A Fat Truck Driver, But They Regretted It When They Discovered Who He Really Was Plays Star Undo The Kherki Daula toll plaza relocation to Pachgaon has been on the cards for years to ease congestion at the existing location and provide relief from toll charges, which is a sore point for the residents of new sectors and those working in Manesar industrial areas. The toll plaza sees heavy traffic from commuters and commercial vehicles. However, repeated delays in shifting plans have slowed the project. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said the administration has received a memorandum from villagers and said the issue is under examination. "We have formed a committee comprising officials from NHAI, HSIIDC, GMRL and NCRTC along with district administration. They will study the proposal from all angles and submit their assessment to the govt for action. Multiple departments are involved," he said. Local MLA from Pataudi Bimla Chaudhary met the leaders at the mahapanchayat and assured them the underpass would be built. Villagers say the highway authority initially planned a flyover at the location, which was later scrapped. They were then assured that an underpass would be constructed, but no work has started so far. According to protesters, the district administration has told them a committee has been formed to examine the matter and will submit its report within a week. "We have been given assurances before, but nothing has materialised. We will wait for the report, but if work on the underpass does not start, our protest will be intensified. This time, we will not back down," said Mahavir Singh, a resident of Pachgaon. DC Kumar added, "We have asked the villagers not to stop the works and their demand is being examined. We are coordinating with them and working to resolve the matter amicably." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Air India widebody fleet upgrade delayed again, likely to be done by October 2028
NEW DELHI: Air India's upgrade of its legacy widebody fleet has been delayed again. The airline now hopes to complete the task by October 2028, about a year longer than the five-year plan announced earlier. Supply chain constraints since Covid have delayed Tata's $400 million fleet retrofit programme for "delivering a world class flying experience and enhancing operational reliability across its legacy fleet". The airline said it had finally started the upgrade programme for its legacy widebody fleet with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The work is now expected to finish by October 2028, "with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays". In its last few cash-starved state-owned years, Air India had no funds for cabin maintenance or upkeep, and poor in-flight experience on those planes remains among the biggest irritants for passengers on long-haul routes on which these aircraft are deployed. "Air India has commenced the widebody retrofit programme for its legacy B787-8 aircraft, with the first of 26 aircraft (VT-ANT) having flown to a Boeing facility in Victorville, California, in July. A second aircraft is scheduled to depart for the same facility in Oct, with both expected to return to service in December. Retrofit programme for Air India's B787-8s, now on a steady schedule for completion by mid-2027, will introduce brand-new interiors featuring a three-class configuration," the airline said in a statement. Starting early 2027, the airline will additionally retrofit 13 of its legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, aiming for completion by Oct 2028, with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays. As part of a reliability enhancement programme, Air India said it would upgrade the avionics and other critical components of the 26 legacy B787-8 aircraft. "This is intended to reduce operational disruptions." Additionally, seven of the 26 B787-8s will undergo heavy, scheduled maintenance (D-checks) in Victorville. The airline said the retrofit programme for 27 legacy narrowbody A320neo aircraft commenced last Sept. It is "progressing per schedule".
