'Karma: The Dark World': Trust no one in 1980s East Germany

BERLIN: Karma: The Dark World is a psychological thriller set in East Germany in 1984, now out for PS5, Xbox and Steam.
In this horror game the Leviathan Corporation brings to life an alternate version of this surveillance state, one where control is exercised through a class system and mind-altering drugs. And one where you can't trust anyone, not even yourself.
Players slip into the role of Daniel McGovern, an investigator in the so-called Thought Office of the Leviathan Corporation. To solve crimes, you naturally also rely on traditional methods: such as analysing evidence at crime scenes or interviewing witnesses and suspects.

But there's also a special investigative method: a journey into the consciousness of the accused. However, there's a problem: the mind doesn't always reflect reality. Events are influenced by emotions and things get mixed up. This complicates the search for the truth.
The game not only impresses with its storytelling, but also with its detailed visuals, which convey an oppressive, dystopian world. From gloomy alleys to surreal landscapes of consciousness, everything is convincingly portrayed.
The year the game's set in is, of course, no coincidence. The game is inspired by George Orwell's novel 1984 , but also by the filmmaking techniques of game developer Hideo Kojima and the narrative style of director David Lynch.
Karma: The Dark World is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Series X/S consoles, as well as on Steam for around €25/$25. – dpa

Xbox drops work on 'Contraband' video game after four years

Xbox has said little about Contraband since the game was announced in 2021 with a vague teaser. It was described on the company's website as 'a co-op smuggler's paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan'. — Photo by Sam Pak on Unsplash Microsoft Corp's Xbox gaming unit is cancelling Contraband , a multiplayer video game that was in development for years at the Swedish company Avalanche Studios Group. "Active development has now stopped while we evaluate the project's future,' Avalanche said Thursday in a statement on its website. "We're thankful for the excitement we've seen from the community since we announced and will give an update on what's next as soon as we can.' NAFAS boosts agro-food networking at HPPNK 2025 in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The National Farmers' Organisation (NAFAS) is reinforcing its role in Malaysia's agro-food sector by actively participating in the 50th National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025. The event, set to take place from Aug 1 to 3 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors. NAFAS, a key sponsor, is supporting the event through four strategic focus areas: Agro Millenia, Sufficient and Guaranteed, Sejahtera Madani, and Agro MADANI Sales. The organisation is collaborating with the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) to host an e-sports tournament under the Agro Millenia segment. A total of 32 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang teams will compete for a RM10,000 prize pool. 'Entry is free, with winners set to take home cash prizes, plaques, participation certificates and exclusive T-shirts,' NAFAS stated. The tournament will feature live commentary by gaming influencers Ikuto, Kuro Sensei, and Sunfrost. Attendees can also enjoy interactive activities such as Kahoot games, arcade machines, PlayStation 5, and VR experiences. At the HPPNK Pavilion, NAFAS will showcase the padi industry chain, including technical aspects, fertiliser types, and farmer support services. A CASE machinery demonstration will highlight advancements in agricultural mechanisation. Two NAFAS subsidiaries—NAFAS Bajakimia Sdn Bhd and NAFAS Agri Services Sdn Bhd—will offer fertiliser sales and technical advisory services. Visitors can participate in the Jawab dan Menang contest and Lucky Draw, with prizes including motorcycles, PlayStation 5 units, gold wafer coins, and electric scooters. Review: A turn-of-the-millenium road trip in 'Keep Driving'

First buy some stuff – a tent for the festival would be good. — Photos: Y/CJ/Y/dpa BERLIN: Cruising around, good conversations, loud music and some distant destination. Road trips can be wonderful. But they can also be exhausting. PC game Keep Driving manages to capture both aspects. At the beginning, players can choose from several vehicles, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. A pickup truck, for example, has more cargo space for useful items, while a saloon will accommodate more people. Players must use their ability cards to neutralise certain symbols that can cost resources. The selected vehicle is always in the centre of the screen and a dashboard at the bottom shows various information such as how much fuel is left, how much energy the main character has and the car's condition. You have to keep a close eye on these resources. If one runs out, the road trip ends and you have to start again. The main destination is marked on a map: a festival on the other side of an unnamed country, clearly inspired by the US. First you have to buy a ticket and possibly a tent. It's the 2000s, there's a festival in another corner of the country, you're young and set off on a road trip. On the way there are various places that serve as intermediate destinations and offer different opportunities to replenish resources, buy items or improve the car. On the roads in between, there are events that can best be compared to turn-based battles. In these events – which can be potholes or traffic jams – you have to neutralise certain symbols, which can cost resources. This is done with skill cards that you place on the symbols. Which important items still need to go from the shop to the boot? You'll also meet hitchhikers along the way. If you pick them up, they'll not only share entertaining stories and their own goals, but they can also be helpful at events using their own skills. The real feeling in this game comes from the beautiful indie music on the soundtrack. A nice detail: You can choose which songs play using your own playlists. The game also features atmospheric pixel graphics. Keep Driving is available on Steam for around €18/US$18 (RM45 in Malaysia). The game is suitable for players aged 14 and older. – dpa
