UAE: 2,400 couples undergo premarital genetic screening; 92% found compatible
Around 2,400 couples have undergone premartial genetic screening so far with 92% found to be compatible, as part of the UAE's Genome Programme, it was announced on Friday.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, chaired a meeting of the Emirates Genome Council, and the council approved programmes for newborn genetic screenings, expanded genetic screening for adults in the UAE Genome Programme, personalised fertility and cardiovascular genetic screening..
The Premarital Genetic Screening Programme was implemented from January 1, 2025 by the Ministry of Health and Prevention, in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Emirates Heath Services, Dubai Health Authority, and strategic partners.
To date, it has supported 2,428 couples, finding more than 92 per cent genetically compatible through comprehensive genetic screening of 570 genes linked to more than 840 genetic disorders. Couples who required additional support were provided personalised genetic counselling to assess and diagnose risk factors and offer potential solutions to support family planning decisions.
The programme aims to safeguard community members from hereditary diseases and empower couples to utilise genetic data to make informed decisions in family planning, preserving the health and wellbeing of community members and ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
New population screening programmes
The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince endorsed new population screening programmes that expand the utilisation of genomic data and accelerate genome-driven personalised healthcare in the UAE. The programmes include newborn genetic screenings, enhanced screenings of adult participants in the Emirati Genome Programme, provision of personalised fertility programmes, and cardiovascular genetic screening.
The newborn genetic screening programme will assess genetic conditions with available treatments and early intervention options for infants, assessing 733 genes to test for more than 800 conditions.
Population disease screenings, for adults participating in the Emirati Genome Programme, aim to further identify actionable and relevant conditions for UAE nationals, by assessing 94 genes linked to more than 50 genetic conditions.
The personalised fertility programme assesses 186 genes linked to more than 130 genetic conditions, to provide personalised medicine recommendations and treatments for couples.
Cardiovascular screenings will provide genetic diagnosis and treatment, as well as early prevention, for cardiovascular related conditions through the assessment of more than 800 genes linked to more than 100 genetic conditions.
T2T Emirati Reference Genome study
Sheikh Khaled was briefed on the completion of the landmark Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Emirati Reference Genome study aimed at advancing precision medicine for communities in the UAE. The study, by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with Khalifa University and M42, bridges critical gaps in genomic data and provides a vital resource that enhances the ability to compare with other reference genomes, supporting the advancement of disease research, pharmacogenomics and the development of Emirati-specific targeted therapies.
Emirati Genome Programme progress
The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince was also updated on the progress of the Emirati Genome Programme, which has collected more than 700,000 genetic samples from citizens across the nation, marking significant progress towards the overall target of 1 million.
In addition, the Emirati Genome Programme has completed the collection of 100,000 samples from participants from different nationalities for a new initiative that leverages the UAE's advanced genomic capabilities. The project, in collaboration with M42, helps reduce gaps in genomic data globally by providing insights into genetic mutations affecting over 2.5 billion people across different ethnicities, with the aim to drive further collaboration on precision medicine research and solutions.
The Emirati Genome Programme is a key project under the National Genome Strategy and will support the transformation of healthcare services in the UAE by providing high-quality genetic data that enables researchers, physicians and scientists to identify the causes of genetic diseases, understand the type of genetic mutations, anticipate susceptibility to some diseases, and develop effective personalised healthcare plans.

British Palestinians have described the challenges that their families in Gaza are going through to get food as part of a plea for tougher action by the UK government on Israel. Wafaa Shamallakh, who works as a medical interpreter in London, described how her sister Maysa in Gaza, spent hours yesterday waiting for her husband and son to return from an aid distribution point on the Netzarim border. Maysa's husband and son Joud, 15, walked for more than an hour to reach the aid distribution point, but were forced to turn back owing to the chaos they found there. 'Thousands of people were there, coming from the north and the south of Gaza, desperate to find a bag of flour, a little sugar, maybe some pasta. It was chaos. A quadcopter flew overhead shooting at crowds,' she said. Fire and smoke bombs made it difficult for them to see. Her cousin Khaled was injured. The pair returned empty-handed that day. 'My twin nieces, Dima and Rima cried when they saw their father return with nothing. But my sister Maysa was relieved, because at least they came back alive,' she said. 'This is what it means to survive in Gaza. This is their daily life, fetching food has become a battle of survival,' she said. The family were living in tents, with 'no insulation, no water, no electricity', where they cook over fires from wood collected from the rubble. 'My sister spends hours just trying to find enough work to earn a piece of bread.' The family may have two meals on a 'lucky' days, having lentil soup for breakfast, or sharing a piece of bread in the evening. Often they 'go hungry so their children can eat'. Israel has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip since March. A US and Israeli attempt to introduce their own aid distribution mechanism through US security contractor the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation last week has backfired. The GHF closed its distribution centres on Wednesday after several deadly shooting incidents killed scores of Palestinians and drew sharp UN condemnation. It then delayed the reopening of its aid sites on Thursday, without clarifying when they would resume service, as starvation looms in the war-ravaged enclave. People were journeying for days from different parts of Gaza to get access to food the distribution points in Rafah – but were forced to turn back owing to the scenes of chaos when they arrived. Bassem Farajallah, a British Palestinian, described how his nephew Nour travelled from Gaza city to Nusayra, from which he was then forced to walk to Rafah owing to an Israeli prohibition of vehicles there. On arrival, he found 'nothing, only danger and gunfire'. 'In the end, he managed to buy a small amount of flour for nearly 100 dollars,' he said. He was gone for three days, and Mr Farajallah described the huge emotional toll on his sister, Nour's mother, as she waited for him to return. The family has not seen meat or chicken in more than a year, and his sister a diabetic with high blood pressure, survives on bread that is stretched with salt and pasta. UK urged to take action UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer changed his tone on Gaza this week, describing the humanitarian crisis as 'intolerable' during a press conference in Scotland. Reiterating his comments in Parliament, he said on Wednesday: 'We will keep looking at further action along with our allies, including sanctions, but let me be absolutely clear: we need to get back to a ceasefire.' Though he met British Palestinians in October last year, there was a prevailing sense from the community that they were being ignored. 'I want them to look genuinely at us, to sit with us and listen and consider our demands. Listen to that community, which has families back in Gaza,' Mr Farajallah told The National. Ms Shamallakh said she felt let down by the British government's response to the conflict, which until recently supported Israel's military campaign in Gaza. The new Labour government said it would be guided by international law in its response to the conflict. Last month, it suspended new trade talks with Israel, imposed a new round of sanctions of Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, and summoned the Israeli ambassador to the UK. But those measures were undermined by the UK Trade envoy's visit to Israel the following week. Ms Shamallakh called on the UK government to impose a full embargo, political and economic sanctions, and assert 'real pressure to bring an end to the genocide' and ensure unhindered humanitarian aid access. 'Let this be a turning point where Britain stops whispering about international law and starts upholding it, because the people of Gaza are not waiting for your sympathy, they are demanding your courage,' she said.

MoHAP launches 'Hajj Safely' to support pilgrims at UAE's airports

MoHAP Launches Digital Sick Leave Attestation to Streamline Healthcare Services
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has rolled out a fully digital system for issuing and attesting sick leave and medical reports, marking a key step in the UAE's Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme. The move is designed to cut transaction times, boost efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction by allowing individuals to manage sick leave attestations through MoHAP's website or smart app using the UAE Pass. Fees are paid electronically, and the process has been tailored to reduce delays and paperwork. Under the new system, sick leaves of up to five days are attested automatically. Requests for longer periods are reviewed by a medical committee, with decisions issued within one working day. Leaves extending beyond one month require approval from the Supreme Medical Committee, while those between six and thirty days are assessed by a subcommittee. All attestation requests must be submitted within one month of the sick leave being issued. The service covers both private and government healthcare providers and applies to sick leaves issued inside or outside the UAE. For documents from abroad, prior attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is mandatory. Abdullah Ahli, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Support Services, said the platform reflects the Ministry's push toward smart, customer-centric healthcare solutions. 'We aim to eliminate procedural complexities and deliver credible, fast-track services,' he said. Amal Al Marzooqi, Director of the Customer Happiness Department, highlighted that the system is built for speed, flexibility, and transparency. 'Our priority is to build trust in digital healthcare services and meet future expectations through innovation,' she said.
