‘Several days of strikes' at Irish fave Spain tourist destination as thousands of workers threaten fresh holiday blow

IRISH holiday makers have been warned "several days" of fresh strike action on the Canary Islands could ruin holiday plans.
It comes amid new walk out plans by hospitality workers as part of an ongoing

Spanish hotel chiefs have offered workers whopping wage rises - but got the knock-back from unions who are threatening further strikes this summer.
Union bosses in the Balearic Islands are promising 'several days of strikes' in July and worker demos from the end of this month unless their pay demands are met.
And in Tenerife and three of the other
Overnight the possibility of walkouts in both popular holiday destinations moved a step closer as employers upped their pay offers but got short shrift from union chiefs who labelled the proposed rises 'crumbs.'

Balearic Islands' hotel chiefs increased a wage rise proposal that was already on the table to 9.5 per cent over three years - but were warned to expect a 'no' from worker representatives set to demand more than double that at a key meeting this afternoon.
UGT union spokesman Jose Garcia Relucio described the offer ahead of the meeting as 'more crumbs' and claimed hotel bosses wanted their workers to survive on tips.
Referencing a demo five days ago by around 300 union members outside the Palma HQ of the Majorca Hotel Federation, he told local press: 'It sounds like hotel owners are clueless about what happened last Friday.'
Further south, the likelihood of strike action this summer also looks more likely after hotel association Ashotel's offer of a 13.5 per cent pay rise over three years received a lukewarm response from unions.

Ashotel revealed its new wage rise proposals late yesterday, saying they would affect more than 33,000 workers in Tenerife and the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

It said in a statement: 'This increase is broken down as follows: seven per cent in the first year from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, 3.25 per cent from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and the remaining 3.25 per cent from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2028.'
A spokesman for the hotel association added, describing a previous Easter hotel strike in the area as 'unfair':
They said: 'Ashotel has always been open to negotiate, even with a collective agreement in force until 2026 and with a strike held at Easter, which it considers was unfair.
'But these negotiations must take place within the framework of the collective bargaining table, which is the body with which the business and trade union parties have been legally equipped to reach agreements.
'The proposal put forward by the hotel employers' association focuses on wage increases, given the specific interest of the trade unions.
'Ashotel has never refused a wage increase, as shown by the increases year after year, even in the tough
EXCACT TIMEFRAME
Union sources responded by claiming the Ashotel proposal had 'small print' and would lead to the loss of working rights.
Union members are set to vote on possible strike action next Monday in Tenerife and the western Canary Islands.
If they end up going ahead, the first strike would take place on July 4 before a repeat of industrial action every Friday thereafter for the rest of that month and August.
Unions are also expected to launch protests outside the doors of hotels.
'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH'
Just last month some 23,000
Crowds held banners with messages such as :"Mass tourism is killing our economy and culture".
Similar movements have been seen across Spain with protestors blocking tour buses and blocking access to popular landmarks.
Demonstrators were heard shouting "Canarias No Se Vende", meaning "The Canary Islands Are Not For Sale," and "Enough is Enough" as they proudly held Canary Island flags in the sky during the protest.
Some banners called for a stop to excessive tourism whilst others said: "There's not enough beds for so many foreigners."
Activists were also heard blowing whistles, banging on drums and blowing through huge shells to make a loud horn-like noise.
'STAY CLEAR' OF PROTESTS
IRISH tourists should make sure to stay up to date with their hotel details and pay attention to local developments
The Department of Foreign Affairs do detail some general advice for
They state: "Public gatherings and demonstrations can at times take place with little or no warning.
"We recommend that you stay clear of demonstrations and follow the advice of the local authorities.
"Protests may cause disruption to transport and other services. Be prepared to adjust your travel plans at short notice if necessary, and allow yourself extra time for your journey.
"You should also check for travel updates or transport delays before and during your trip to Spain."
And the
New action promised for July is just the
Workers staged a disruptive action during the busy Easter period in April. Action took place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife over April 17 and 18.
The strikes followed the rejection of a proposal from the employers' associations.
These included a six per cent pay increase, implementation of adjustable beds, and the establishment of a negotiation table before the end of the month to address other concerns.
The strikes have involved approximately 80,000 hotel industry employees in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.

How Rachel Reeves will RUIN British horse racing for millions of fans in her desperation to increase taxes

The Racing Tax will put the sport's British success story in grave danger NICK TIMOTHY How Rachel Reeves will RUIN British horse racing for millions of fans in her desperation to increase taxes AFTER increasing spending by EIGHT times more than she promised, Rachel Reeves has created a huge, £51billion black hole in the public finances – and she's going to make YOU pay the price for her failure. In the Budget this year, we are going to see record tax rises — and among the ideas in the Treasury is a new Racing Tax. 3 Horseracing supports rural communities and towns all over Britain Credit: Alamy 3 Chancellor Rachel Reeves has created a huge, £51billion black hole in the public finances Credit: Reuters 3 A bookmaker pictured at Royal Ascot in 2022 Credit: Getty Horseracing is the second-largest spectator sport, with five million people watching every year across 59 courses. It generates £4.1billion for the economy and backs 85,000 jobs. We have the best horses, the best trainers and four of the top ten races in the world. It supports rural communities and towns all over Britain, including West Suffolk, home to the Newmarket racecourses, which I'm proud to represent in Parliament. But the Racing Tax will put this British success story in grave danger. Right now, bookies pay a 15 per cent tax rate on racing, but Labour's plan to combine all online gambling taxes into a single rate could increase it to 21 per cent. 'Mindless free-for-all' Because racing is also subject to the Betting Levy, ministers would put racing at a competitive disadvantage against the most addictive kinds of online gaming. It could mean £330million of lost revenue for racing in just the first five years, and put 2,752 jobs at risk in the first year. This would lead to higher prices and less racing because of lost income. This proves Labour doesn't understand racing at all. Punters who follow the horses, on the whole, tend to be more selective and use their knowledge, judgment and skills when placing their bets at the bookies, on the course or online. British Horse Racing to Strike for the First Time: Industry Unites Against Betting Tax Hike Plus there are only so many races that you can put money on. But online gambling is a mindless free-for-all and incredibly addictive. There is simply no reason why horseracing should be treated in the same way. Yet, in the desperation to increase taxes, racing — and millions of racing fans — will suffer. Some assume racing has the cash to spare, but this is not true at all. While the industry is very valuable to the economy, its profit margins are tight for breeders and trainers. They invest a lot, but don't always see a return. We are already at risk of falling behind global competitors — such as France — because we are breeding fewer thoroughbred horses. But our racing industry isn't taking this lying down. On September 10, the day before the St Leger festival at Doncaster, no races will take place in Britain. Everyone in the industry knows the financing of horseracing needs reform. Nick Timothy The four race meetings at Lingfield Park, Carlisle, Uttoxeter and Kempton Park will be cancelled. The industry is taking a financial hit to prove its point. Usually, races are only cancelled because of awful weather, equine virus outbreaks or national crises. But the whole industry, from owners to trainers to jockeys, is standing together to protest against Labour's plans. It will be the first time in the sport's modern history that the industry will voluntarily refuse to hold races. Together, they will head to Westminster and make their voices heard. Everyone in the industry knows the financing of horseracing needs reform. Australia and France give horseracing a lot more government support through direct funding or betting taxes than us. Private investors have deeper pockets in the USA and Japan. Prize money is more modest in Britain — which means races in places like the Middle East might become more appealing to owners and trainers than races at home. But the industry keeps getting punished. No progress has been made on reforming the Horserace Betting Levy, which provides a third of the industry's income. 'Nobody has any fun' Affordability checks have been introduced for anyone betting more than £150 on racing within 30 days, driving customers away and costing £3billion in lost turnover in just two years. Labour ministers keep offering us warm words, but fail to deliver. The Racing Tax is the last straw. Opposing Labour's tax plans does not mean we don't want change. The Horserace Betting Levy can be improved by applying it to bookies' total turnover rather than just their profits. It could cover bets placed on overseas races so long as the bookies are based in Britain. The rate could be raised above ten per cent. This would be done to the benefit of the industry and punters alike. There is also more the sport can do to modernise and increase revenue. But the Racing Tax is classic Labour — faceless bureaucrats interfering with people's lives, undermining a successful industry and making sure nobody has any fun. They just don't understand how the economy works, which is why they are killing it with more tax and regulation. We should all stand with horseracing to protect this vital but endangered industry.

Five transfer targets Arsenal could move for including Rodrygo and Lookman if they offload £100m worth of flops

Scroll down to see how realistic each target could be for Arsenal GUNNER GO FOR IT Five transfer targets Arsenal could move for including Rodrygo and Lookman if they offload £100m worth of flops MIKEL ARTETA has been backed to the tune of over £200m this summer already, but Arsenal are still open to bringing in another fresh face before the transfer deadline. The Gunners appear to still be in the market for another attacking option, with a left winger most likely, but it's clear they will have to sell before they can buy. 8 Mikel Arteta could still add another new face this summer Credit: Getty 8 The Gunners have spent big on players like Viktor Gyokeres Credit: Getty Advertisement 8 Leandro Trossard and Reiss Nelson are two stars that could be sold to raise funds Credit: The Times Despite having a lot of headroom regarding PSR regulations, Arsenal are tight on Uefa Financial Fair Play rules. Arrivals of players like Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke have meant the Gunners' net spend is the second highest in the league this summer. Title rivals Liverpool, who have been spending for fun, find themselves in a far better position despite spending over £315m since the window first opened. Advertisement That's because The Reds have sold well, shifting on the likes of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah and Ben Gannon Doak for big money. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL HE'S A KEEPER Man Utd have obvious solution to goalkeeper crisis, and it's not Donnarumma Arsenal will need to do the same with their pool of deadwood if they are to raise the funds to dip back into the market. Fabio Vieira, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Reiss Nelson all seem to be available for the right price. Should Arsenal manage to sell all six of those players for their current transfer value it could take their outgoings to well in excess of £100m, allowing them to re-enter the market. Advertisement Here, SunSport breaks down five potential targets the Emirates outfit could make a move for if they are able to raise the funds to re-line their pockets.... RODRYGO Real Madrid star Rodrygo has been linked with Arsenal for most of the window. The 24-year-old Brazilian would be seen by many as a big upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli if he is able to replicate his form for Madrid over the years. However, he has been short on minutes in the Spanish capital and actually scored less league goals that Martinelli last term. That said, Arsenal have picked up players hiding in the shadows of La Liga's superteams before and had great success. Advertisement Arteta would be hoping that Rodrygo can be a Martin Odegaard or Alexis Sanchez, and not a Dani Ceballos or Denis Suarez. 8 ANTHONY GORDON Arsenal are known to have a long-held interest in Anthony Gordon and Arteta is always fond of a Premier League ready arrival. Gordon has become a crucial part of Newcastle's rebuild under manager Eddie Howe but could be ready to take the next step in his career. The England international hasn't been in the greatest patch of form recently and new surroundings could be exactly what he needs. Advertisement However, the chances of Newcastle letting Gordon go are very low given the likelihood that they will already be waving goodbye to star man Alexander Isak before the window closes. 8 ADEMOLA LOOKMAN Arsenal were first linked with Ademola Lookman last summer and the winger has been exceptional for Atlanta since. His exit from the Serie A club looks likely, with the 27-year-old submitting a transfer request earlier in the window to try and force through a move to Inter Milan. Reports now claim that Inter have walked away from the deal after Atalanta rejected their £38m bid, potentially opening the door for Arsenal to swoop in. Advertisement Lookman has previous Premier League appearances from his brief spells with Leicester City, Fulham and Everton. 8 RAFAEL LEAO Rafael Leao has become one of the most consistent top performers in Serie A over the past five years. His versatility would mean that he could play anywhere across the front three for Arsenal and would offer even more depth to Arteta's side. He's still tied down to a contract with AC Milan until 2028 and so won't be a cheap option if the Gunners try to make a move. Advertisement But with Milan out of Europe altogether this season, the temptation of Champions League football could potentially turn Leao's head. 8 BRADLEY BARCOLA Admittedly this one seems unlikely, but if Arsenal can raise over £100m from player sales then it could tee them up for a marquee signing. Barcola, 22, is one of the most highly-rated wingers in Europe at the moment, having a hand in seven of PSG's goals on their journey to Champions League glory last season. And while a switch to Arsenal may not seem realistic, Barcola would be given the chance to be one of the stars in North London, rather than staying in the shadows of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia in Paris. Advertisement He's already been linked with a Premier League switch this summer, with Liverpool reportedly sniffing around. But if Arsenal could get their hands on one of Europe's best gems it would go a long way in finally getting them over the line for a league title. 8
