MBPP cracks down on illegal entertainment outlets, foreign-run stall
The city council said both premises were subjected to enforcement action during a special operation last night.
It said the operation, conducted by the Licensing Department and the Enforcement Department of the MBPP, involved the seizure of broadcasting equipment from both premises.
"The enforcement action (seizure) was carried out based on a notice issued for conducting unlicensed entertainment business activities under Section 6(1) of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998.
"All seized broadcasting equipment was taken to the MBPP Enforcement Department's storage for safekeeping, documentation, and further action," it said in a Facebook posting.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the city council, through the Licensing Department, Enforcement Department, and Municipal Services Department, carried out a demolition operation yesterday morning on an unlicensed stall that had been rented out to foreign nationals for business purposes.
It said the seizure of business equipment was also carried out based on the notice issued under the Penang Island City Council (MPPP) Street Hawker By-Laws 1979.
"We are thankful to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) for their assistance in ensuring the smooth execution of this operation.
"We will continue to monitor and take strict enforcement action against any business premises, especially food stalls rented out to foreign nationals for conducting business," it added in another Facebook entry.

QuickCheck: Are claims of a ‘new, faster' way to get a driving license legit?
FOR some, getting a driver's license is a necessity, while for others, it is a rite of passage. It can also be a hassle due to the numerous processes and procedures. Recently, a TikTok user posted a video claiming to offer a new and faster way to obtain a driver's license that circumvents much of the red tape others have had to go through in the past. Is the claim legitimate? Verdict: FALSE The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) says that the content of the video is considered illegal because it offers services to obtain licences without following the proper legal process and procedures. 'We would like to clarify that the individual involved has never been given authority, approval, or recognition by the department in any official matter,' said the department in a Facebook post on July 29. It also warned the public not to be deceived by any offer that promises a shortcut, cheap or easy way to obtain a driving license. 'Any official complaint can be channelled to the JPJ through the JPJ Official Complaints Portal - it said in the post, adding that legal action would be taken against any party who tries to deceive the community for personal gain. Zuckerberg shares AI superintelligence vision as Meta posts results
SAN JOSE: Meta is stepping up its push to become a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg unveiling ambitions to build "personal superintelligence for everyone in the world." Zuckerberg made the remarks as the company reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter results on Wednesday, driven by a booming advertising business on Facebook and Instagram. He said Meta has begun to see early signs of AI systems capable of self-improvement - an important step toward what the company defines as superintelligence, or AI that exceeds human capabilities across the board. "The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable. Developing superintelligence is now in sight," he said. Meta, which has long used AI to personalise user feeds on Facebook and Instagram, said improved recommendation algorithms drove a 5% increase in user time on Facebook and 6% on Instagram last quarter. The Facebook parent announced it expects to make investments of at least US$66bil (RM280.6bil) this year, primarily in AI data centres, maintaining an upper limit of US$72bil (RM306.1bil). Three months ago, the company's projected minimum investment was US$64bil (RM272.1bil). Zuckerberg has been aggressively courting top AI talent and is seeking to surpass rivals including ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Google, and Elon Musk's xAI. Robust financial results are expected to power Meta's AI ambitions. In the second quarter, Meta's revenue rose 22% year-on-year to US$47.5bil (RM207.9bil), while net income jumped 36% to about US$18.3bil (RM77.8bil), beating market expectations. For the current quarter, Meta forecasts revenue between US$47.5bil (RM207.9bil) and US$50.5bil (RM214.7bil), above market expectations of around US$46bil (RRM195.5bil). Meta shares rose almost 12% in after-hours trading. – dpa
