Palestinian author Yasmin Zaher wins Dylan Thomas prize with ‘audacious' novel The Coin

The Guardian15-05-2025
A novel about a Palestinian woman who participates in a pyramid scheme reselling Birkin bags has won this year's Swansea University Dylan Thomas prize.
Palestinian journalist Yasmin Zaher took home the £20,000 prize – awarded to writers aged 39 or under in honour of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who died at that age – for her debut novel The Coin. She was announced as the winner at a ceremony in Swansea, Thomas's birthplace.
The Coin, chosen in a unanimous decision by judges, 'is a borderless novel, tackling trauma and grief with bold and poetic moments of quirkiness and humour', said writer and judging chair Namita Gokhale. 'It fizzes with electric energy', with Zaher bringing 'complexity and intensity to the page through her elegantly concise writing'.
Born in 1991 in Jerusalem, Zaher studied biomedical engineering at Yale University and creative writing at the New School, where she was advised by the novelist Katie Kitamura.
Kitamura described The Coin as a 'brilliant, audacious, powerhouse of a novel. A story of obsession and appetite, politics and class, it is deliciously unruly. An exceptional debut by an outrageous new talent.'
The novel follows a wealthy Palestinian woman as she tries to set down roots in New York, teaching in a school for underprivileged boys. However, she begins to feel stifled in the US, and develops an obsession with cleanliness and purity.
In an interview last July, Zaher said that she had 'very mixed feelings' about her novel coming out at this time. 'Publishing a novel is a dream come true for me, but the joy is muted by grief. Deep inside, I also know that current events are driving some of the interest in the book, and I feel very uncomfortable with that, because I never considered myself as speaking in the name of my people.
'But I tell myself that identity is not pure, that life is messy, and, maybe most importantly, that literature is at its best when it resists the boxes.'

Alongside Gokhale on the judging panel were the writer Jan Carson, poet Mary Jean Chan, critic Max Liu and academic Daniel Williams.
Previous winners of the prize, launched in 2006, include Max Porter, Bryan Washington and Patricia Lockwood. Last year, Caleb Azumah Nelson won the award for his novel Small Worlds.
'Zaher is an extraordinary winner to mark 20 years of this vital prize,' said Gokhale.

Jackson and Ashley were spending time together two years after his divorce from Jodie Turner-Smith, with whom he shares his five-year-old daughter Juno. Ashley more recently got out of a relationship, as she revealed in February of this year that she and Constantin Klein had split after nearly three years together. Her meet-up with Jackson was particularly intriguing, as it appears to be the first time that the two have been pictured together. They spent time together amid Jackson's reunion with his Dawson's Creek costar Katie Holmes. The two have been spotted filming scenes for their upcoming feature Happy Hours around the Big Apple in recent days. Ashley looked cool and collected in a gray satin crop top with a white lace border, which she paired with a gray midi skirt featuring a scale-like pattern. She added a splash of color with a large yellow mesh bag, and she completed her low-key ensemble with chunky white trainers and slim tortoiseshell cat-eye sunglasses. Although Ashley showed off a wide smile, and Jackson was also seen beaming at other points along their route, neither actor displayed any PDA. The actress is best known for her role as Kate, Viscountess Bridgerton, who enters the historical romance after moving to England from India. The actress, who was born in England to Indiana Tamil parents, is also known for starring on another Netflix series, Sex Education. Her past roles have included supporting parts on Broadchurch and The Sister, but Ashley has lately been establishing herself as an in-demand film star. I, Robot star hints at drama on Will Smith film after claiming his cyborg role 'tested higher' with audiences

A former costar of actor Will Smith insinuated that the actor used his clout to minimize his presence in a film more than two decades back - impacting his career in the process. Alan Tudyk, 54, portrayed the role of Sonny in the 2004 film iRobot, in which Smith, 56, starred as Del Spooner. Tudyk said that he was unceremoniously dumped from promotional materials when his character began testing higher than Smith's with trial audiences. Tudyk, appearing on Toon'd In with Jimmy Cummings, explained the course of events that led to him being minimized in the promotional rollout of the motion picture. 'They were doing test audiences with the movie,' Tudyk said on the June 15 edition of the podcast, which has begun to go viral. Tudyk continued: 'They score the characters and I got word back, "Alan, you're testing higher than Will Smith."' 'And then I was gone - I was gone,' Tudyk said. 'There was no publicity and my name was not mentioned.' Tudyk said he was 'so shocked' and concerned moviegoers weren't 'going to know' he played a key role in the motion picture. This is not Smith's first time publicly clashing with a costar: In 1993 he had a well-publicized feud with his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air castmate Janet Hubert, which ultimately resulted from her dismissal from the show. Hubert did reunite with Smith and the cast during a 2020 reunion that aired on HBO Max. Smith in the special admitted that he 'wasn't sensitive' and 'wasn't perceptive' to struggles Hubert was dealing with, as she was pregnant at the time of their row. 'Now that I've had three kids I've learned some things that I did not know at the time,' he said, 'and I would do things very differently - but I can see where I made the set very difficult for Janet.' The Academy Award-winning King Richard star continues to try and rebuild his reputation more than three years after he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Smith's infamous slap of Chris Rock came on March 27, 2022, after the comedian made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The joke was about her shaved head, saying, 'Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it!' in a reference to the 1997 movie which featured Demi Moore with a shaved head. (Pinkett Smith has diagnosed with alopecia, which causes hair loss.) Smith then walked onstage and smacked Rock, then returned to his seat and shouted at him twice, 'Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!' to a stunned audience. Later in the evening - in his acceptance speech after winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role as tennis patriarch Richard Williams in King Richard - Smith apologized to the Academy and other nominees, but made no reference to Rock. Smith subsequently apologized on multiple occasions over the incident, and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ahead of being issued a 10-year ban from the Oscars. In an apology he issued in July of 2022 over the incident in an online clip, Smith said his spouse 'had nothing to do with' his attack on Rock. 'I made a choice on my own from my own experiences, from my history with Chris,' he said. 'I want to say sorry to my kids and my family for the heat that I've brought on all of us.' He added: 'I've reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he's not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk.'
