Ex-servicemen's Association celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas in Mysuru

The Hindu26-07-2025
The Mysore Armed Forces Ex-servicemen's Association celebrated the Kargil Vijay Diwas here on Saturday.
It is an annual affair which is celebrated on July 26 every year. The members of the Association made floral offerings to the statue of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa to mark the event.
The Association members attended the programme along with their family members and carried placards displaying the images of some of the martyrs of the Kargil war, like Vikram Batra, Sanjay Kumar, Manoj Kumar Pandey, and Jinto Gogoi among others.
They also submitted a memorandum addressed to MLA for Chamaraja Harish Gowda, and sought 10% reservation in educational institutions for children of former servicemen. They also pointed out that the State government used to allot land for former servicemen, but the practice was dispensed with more than 10 years ago. Though the previous government and the present government in the State had promised to allot sites in cities or villages, it was yet to be implemented, according to the association.
They also expressed regret that although the Mysuru Dasara is celebrated in a grand manner every year, no government had thought it fit to appoint them into any of the committees that are constituted to organise the festival.
The government was also urged to issue fee bus passes to former servicemen across the State.

Minister Khandre flags off Dasara elephants with call for wildlife conservation

Bengaluru: The ceremonial Gajapayana—the grand journey of the Dasara elephants—officially commenced today at Veeranahosahalli in Hunsur Taluk, heralding the start of preparations for the Mysuru Dasara festivities. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre performed the traditional puja to the first batch of nine elephants out of the 14 chosen to participate this year. After being offered sugarcane, rice, and jaggery, the elephants set off on their journey to Mysuru. Addressing the gathering, Minister Khandre emphasized the need for stronger wildlife conservation efforts. 'It is not enough to admire animals during safaris or the decorated elephants during Dasara. We must commit ourselves to preserving their habitats,' he said. He expressed concern over recent incidents where elephants were killed by illegal electric fences and leopards died in traps. He also referenced a poisoning case at the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. Khandre stressed that all living beings have the right to life and said humans, having encroached upon forest lands, must not harm the creatures who inhabit them. He urged people to take a vow to protect wildlife instead of eliminating them. He pointed out that cattle from neighboring states grazing in Karnataka's forests are affecting the availability of food for wild animals. The government, he said, has initiated measures to curb such practices. To reduce human-animal conflict, especially with elephants, the minister highlighted the state's initiatives such as solar fencing, tentacle fencing, and elephant trenches. He revealed that when he assumed office, only 312.918 km of railway barricades were installed. Since then, 115.085 km have been completed, and an additional 193 km has been approved. Over the next two years, a total of 500 km of railway barricades will be laid at a cost of 500 crore. Khandre also reiterated the government's support for forest-dwelling and tribal communities. He assured that those cultivating or residing on forest land prior to 2015—particularly on plots less than three acres—would not be evicted. Joint surveys will be conducted to ensure their protection. Touching on the cultural significance of Dasara, the minister said it symbolizes the victory of good over evil and called upon citizens to shed negative habits and join the celebration with a positive spirit.

₹500 crore set aside for laying railway barricades in remaining forest areas: Eshwar Khandre

Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar Khandre on Monday said that ₹500 crore will be spent on laying railway barricades in remaining forest areas in the next two years in the State. 'Before I became the Forest Minister in 2023, 312.918 km of railway barricades had been installed in the State. But, in the last two years, after I became the Minister, railway barricades have been laid in 115.085 km, and approval has been given for laying the barricades in an additional 193 km to address the human-elephant conflict,' the Minister said. Speaking at the flagging off event of Gajapayana of the Dasara elephants at Veeranahosahalli in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve near here, the Minister said the State government has taken several measures including installation of solar-powered fencing, tentacle fencing, and maintenance of elephant trenches to address the conflicts involving elephants. He informed about the issue of cattle being brought from other States and allowed to graze in the forest areas of Karnataka, resulting in a shortage of fodder for wild animals. Therefore, steps have been taken to prohibit grazing by cattle from outside the State, the Minister said. In memory of Arjuna On the occasion, the Minister announced the award instituted in the name of famed Dasara elephant Arjuna, which died in a tussle with a wild elephant in Hassan two years ago, in memory of the pachyderm and to recognise the services of mahouts, kavadis, and the forest staff, showing excellence in the operations to capture wild elephants, training, and wildlife management. The Minister presented the maiden Arjuna award to Gunda and Nanjundaswamy, the mahout and kavadi of Bheema, the Dasara elephant. The award carries a cash prize of ₹10,000 and a certificate. Mr. Khandre announced that a committee will be constituted to identify suitable persons for the award every year, and it will be presented on the occasion of Gajapayana, which marks the symbolic march of the Dasara elephants, in remembrance of Arjuna, which majestically carried the golden howdah during Mysuru Dasara procession for many years. A memorial for Arjuna was inaugurated recently at the Balle elephant camp in H.D. Kote taluk.

Mango farmers plan ‘signature campaign' seeking ₹12 per kg MSP for Totapuri

The Chittoor district unit of Mango Farmers Welfare Association has decided to intensify agitation in support of the demand for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹12 per kg for Totapuri mangoes. The district committee meeting, led by its president T. Janardhan, at the UTF office here on Sunday (August 3, 2025), announced a massive signature campaign with 50,000 farmers, which would be submitted to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The panel members stressed the need for a continued struggle till the demand was approved. They deplored that despite the assurance of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu about the MSP and the subsidy, local pulp industries and operators of the procurement ramps were issuing bills as low as ₹4 per kg. Expressing concern over the 'exploitation' of the farmers by the pulp units, the association members urged District Collector Sumit Kumar to initiate steps for the implementation of government orders. The Association will conduct the signature campaign from August 4 to 10 across the district, besides organising gram sabhas and passing resolutions in support of the demand. On August 11, mango farmers would participate in a black badge protest at the Gandhi Bomma Centre in Chittoor.
