Russia earthquake: China and Taiwan issue tsunami warnings after almost a million evacuated in Japan

Independent2 days ago
China's eastern coast braced for rising waves on Wednesday after authorities issued a tsunami warning in the wake of a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia 's Kamchatka Peninsula earlier in the day.
The quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, hit at a depth of 20.7km and was centred about 119km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, seismological agencies confirmed.
China's Tsunami Warning Centre said waves between 30cm and one metre were expected to reach parts of the country's eastern coastline by evening, including densely populated regions such as Shanghai.
The natural resources ministry raised a "yellow tsunami alert", signalling moderate risk, and cautioned people in affected areas to avoid beaches, harbours, and low-lying coastal districts through the evening.
The alert for Shanghai and Zhejiang was lifted in the afternoon, however.
Emergency services were deployed in anticipation of potential flooding and to assist with possible evacuations. Local authorities issued instructions urging people to move to higher ground while maritime operations in some ports were temporarily suspended.
No casualties or significant property damage had been reported in China as of late Wednesday morning.
The tsunami threat came the same day as Typhoon Co-May made landfall in Zhejiang province at around 4:30am local time, delivering strong winds of up to 83kmph and torrential rain.
Authorities had already relocated more than 280,000 people in Shanghai and surrounding regions. Hundreds of flights and ferry operations had been cancelled and speed limits imposed across roads and railways.
Ports and public attractions were temporarily shut as Shanghai braced for additional impacts, with forecasters warning of another possible landfall closer to the financial hub later in the day.
The storm brought heavy rainfall and localised flooding to the port city of Zhoushan, prompting emergency management officials to raise the response status to 'Level III' as some urban districts and coastal villages saw waterlogging and power outages.
The earthquake also triggered tsunami warnings and precautionary measures in Taiwan as well as the Philippines, Indonesia, and other Pacific Rim nations and territories from Russia to the US and Peru.
Japan 's Meteorological Agency said that tsunami waves of up to 3m could reach large coastal areas in the northern Pacific, though initial assessments suggested only small surges outside the epicentral region.
Japan evacuated more than a million residents across 133 municipalities along its Pacific coast as the meteorological agency issued advisories.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, said all workers had been evacuated, adding that there were no abnormalities reported so far. The power plant suffered a nuclear meltdown in 2011 following an earthquake and tsunami disaster.
In the US, tsunami warnings and watches were activated for the Hawaiian archipelago, vast stretches of Alaska's coastline, and the Pacific coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington states. Authorities in Hawaii and Alaska advised residents to take urgent action to protect life and property.

The world's most stressful city to visit revealed - with millions of people filling its streets every year

Holidays are supposed to be relaxing, fun and an opportunity to make amazing memories. But they can often be very overwhelming too. New research has revealed which destinations are the most stressful to visit, after analysing the 51 most-frequented cities in the world. The study looked at a variety of factors to determine the rankings, including weather discomfort, reviews, crime data and tourist density. And it was Paris that proved to be the most stressful city to visit, cramming more than 47.5million tourists a year into just 105km² - making it ten times busier than New York. Though the popular destination scored averagely in regards to weather discomfort and crime, the amount of people filling the streets earned it the crown. It was followed by Hanoi, in Vietnam, which ranked second. The Vietnamese capital scored the highest in humidity, meaning it was the most physically uncomfortable destination. To top things off, it placed fourth highest for reviews mentioning stress and it left tourists feeling both overwhelmed and too hot. In third place was Shanghai, in China. With 300million tourists each year, it crams in 47,318 visitors per km². The city also placed in the top 20 for reviews describing it as stressful, and crime. For those hoping to avoid the crowds and holiday somewhere with a more comfortable climate, Dubai ranked as the most relaxing city to visit. With an expansive layout, the 17.1million tourists it attracts each year are more spread out and it has the second lowest crime rate out of the destinations analysed. Interest in the luxurious location has fallen recently, meaning there's even fewer people to crowd the top attractions. Munich, Germany, followed in second place with low crime, comfortable weather and not too many tourists. It's a much calmer destination compared to other European cities. While Melbourne, Australia, ranked third with the second-lowest tourist density of just 1,265 visitors per km². It attracted few reviews describing it as a stressful place, too. To top things off, Melbourne had a comfortable humidity level, meaning those visiting won't have to worry too much about the weather. For a major city, there's plenty of space for tourists to relax while also enjoying the views.

Animation reveals how tsunami, triggered by 8.8-magnitude earthquake, surged across Pacific Ocean

New animation shows the moment a massive earthquake struck Russia and triggered multiple tsunami alerts across the world. An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the country's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday (July 30), causing flooding in the coastal town of Severo-Kurilsk. The powerful tremors also raised tsunami alarms in regions such as New Zealand, Chile, Japan, Hawaii, and the US west coast, prompting evacuation orders for millions of people. A video released by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Research on Thursday captures tsunami waves surging through the Pacific Ocean as a result of the seismic activity. Several people were injured in the earthquake. However, no major damage was reported.

Southern California rocked by 4.4 magnitude earthquake

California has been rocked by a preliminary 4.4 magnitude earthquake that sent shockwaves through Los Angeles. The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected the tremor at 9:32am PT (12:32pm ET), about three miles west of Muscoy in San Bernardino County. A 3.1 magnitude quake hit just four minutes later near Rialto, with smaller quakes under magnitude 2 also detected around the epicenter. 'I felt it in Garden Grove, in my apartment on the 7th floor,' Gregory Christison said on Facebook . 'It was a rolling sensation.' The earthquakes likely occurred along the southern segment of the San Andreas Fault, which runs near Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County. This area is one of the most seismically active in Southern California and also lies near the San Jacinto Fault Zone, another major fault system contributing to regional quake activity. The USGS detected 3.0 and 2.8 magnitude earthquakes in the same area roughly an hour before the strongest quake struck. Chris Jensen, Rialto Fire Department interim fire chief, told the LA Times : 'There's no reportable damage but it's still pretty early.' People reported feeling shaking in many areas including Jurupa Valley, Eastvale, Ontario and even as far as Redondo Beach. Many locals described it as a jolt or sudden movement. Cindy Hecht Sedbrook said she was on the 11th floor of a building in Irvine when she felt the quake. Susan McDiarmid, a resident of Oak Hills, said her 'whole house shook.' Ashely Loren, who recently moved to the area, shared online: 'Earthquake in San Bernardino County! Stronger than the one a few months ago, but not too bad. 'The cabinets moved and then snapped back into place. I'm from Florida, y'all, this will always feel new to me.' The USGS reports a 49 percent chance of a magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquake striking the same area within the next week, and a 10 percent chance of a magnitude 4.0 or greater event. The temblor comes just days after a massive earthquake struck off Russia's sparsely populated eastern coast, unleashing powerful waves that battered buildings in Siberia and northeastern Japan. With a magnitude of 8.8, it ranks as the sixth most powerful earthquake ever recorded. (USGS) showed the earthquake struck about 84 miles east-southeast of Kamchatska, Russia at around 7:24pm ET.
