Woowa Brothers agrees to waive commissions on small orders

Yahoo7 days ago

South Korea's Woowa Brothers and vendor associations have reached an agreement to waive all commissions for orders under Won10,000 (around $7.27) and to provide tiered support for delivery fees.
The move is part of a broader plan to offer up to Won300bn in backing to vendors up to 2028.
Woowa Brothers announced the agreement, mediated by the Democratic Party's Euljiro Committee, with the Korea Franchisee Union and the Association of Fair Platform Business Owners.
It is in response to concerns that vendors have been disproportionately affected by high costs for smaller orders, which could result in them bearing more than 40% of the order amount in delivery fees and commissions.
It also includes a waiver of commission for the vendor-funded part of the discount coupons issued by franchise HQ.
Online delivery platform Baedal Minjok (Baemin) is operated by Woowa Brothers.
The delivery platform had excluded discounts funded by restaurants or franchisees from commission calculations, and this new agreement expands these exemptions.
The support will extend to orders between Won10,000 and Won15,000, with certain methods of support to be determined later.
According to Woowa Brothers, the agreement incorporates further measures including creating a specialised centre to handle vendor inquiries, refining the compensation claim system, reducing the complexity of vendor-related administrative tasks, and introducing a direct communication between vendors and delivery personnel to improve vendor convenience.
These initiatives were conceived following dialogues with vendor associations that commenced in late March.
Woowa Brothers' annual support could reach up to Won100bn, totalling up to Won300bn over three years, if these were implemented.
In spite of the additional support, Baemin will uphold its present commission rate structure, which ranges from 2% to 7.8% under the current tiered rate plan based on vendors' Baemin1 Plus revenue.
Woowa Brothers CEO Bum Seok Austin Kim said: 'By supporting small orders amid the rise in single-person households, we hope to provide convenience and benefits to consumers, while helping vendors grow the number of orders and reduce cost burdens.'
In 2023, Baemin decided to cease its operations in Vietnam due to intense competition and economic headwinds.
"Woowa Brothers agrees to waive commissions on small orders" was originally created and published by Verdict Food Service, a GlobalData owned brand.

JB Pritzker takes aim at Trump in launching Democratic re-election bid for Illinois governor

Spotlighting his accomplishments and highlighting his pushback against President Donald Trump's sweeping and controversial agenda, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Thursday launched his campaign for a third term as Illinois governor. "I'm ready for the fight ahead," the governor said, announcing his 2026 re-election bid in the blue state. Pritzker is a billionaire and a member of the Pritzker family that owns the Hyatt hotel chain. Pritzker said that "Illinois is standing at the center of the fight: the fight to make life more affordable, the fight to protect our freedoms, the fight for common sense." Pritzker has become one of the Democratic Party's most vocal Trump critics during the opening months of the president's second tour in the White House. Pointing to Trump and the Republicans who control Congress, Pritzker argued that "in Washington, all they're offering is chaos and craziness. Their tariffs are hurting farmers and small businesses, stripping away health care from seniors and working families and proposing even bigger deficits than before, all to give big tax breaks to the wealthy." "Donald Trump has made clear that he'll stop at nothing to get his way," the governor charged. "I'm not about to stand by and let him tear down all we're building in Illinois." Pritzker, who started several of his own venture capital and investment startups before running for office, touted that "we don't just talk about problems. In Illinois, we solve them." In another jab at Trump, Pritzker said, "We know government ought to stand up for working families and be a force for good, not a weapon of revenge." In his video, the governor touted that during his two terms in office, "we've balanced seven straight budgets and got nine credit upgrades. We raised the minimum wage, capped the cost of insulin, banned assault weapons, protected abortion rights, and eliminated the state grocery tax, lowered prescription drug costs and added tens of thousands of jobs." However, the Republican Governors Association (RGA) does not see it that way. "People are fleeing Illinois by the hundreds of thousands and Illinois families continue to suffer the consequences of JB Pritzker's abject record of failure at home while he spends his time on a national vanity project trying to further his own political career," RGA Rapid Response Director Kollin Crompton said in a statement to Fox News. Crompton also charged that "opportunities for working Illinois families are in the garbage, criminal illegal immigrants are protected over law-abiding citizens, and Pritzker's tax hikes are destroying family budgets." Illinois, which is the nation's sixth most populous state, does not have term limits for statewide officials. However, there has not been a three-term governor in the state in more than three decades, since GOP Gov. Jim Thompson won four terms as governor in the 1970s and 1980s. Pritzker is seen as a potential contender for the Democrats' 2028 presidential nomination – and the launch of his 2026 gubernatorial re-election campaign is not expected to derail him from potentially running for the White House. He was a high-profile campaign surrogate in the 2024 cycle on behalf of former President Joe Biden, as well as former Vice President Kamala Harris after she replaced Biden as the Democratic Party's nominee last summer. Those efforts brought Pritzker to Nevada, a general election battleground state and an early-voting Democratic presidential primary state, and New Hampshire, which for a century has held the first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Additionally, Pritzker's return to New Hampshire this spring to headline a major state Democratic Party fundraising dinner sparked more speculation about a possible 2028 presidential run.

CNBC's Joe Kernen says NYC may become crime-ridden ‘Gotham' after Zohran Mamdani win: ‘Class warfare'

CNBC anchor Joe Kernen said New York City risks becoming the crime-ridden Gotham of 'The Dark Knight' Batman trilogy following democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani's shocking victory in the city's Democratic mayoral primary. Kernen, speaking on 'Squawk Box' on Wednesday, joked that co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin should challenge Mamdani in the general election. 'I mean, you've got a platform that's similar to his that you ran on, that you said free things,' Kernen said before launching into a pointed analogy. 3 CNBC anchor Joe Kernen likened New York City to the crime-ridden Gotham of 'The Dark Knight' trilogy on Wednesday. CNBC 'I don't wanna go here, but Gotham,' Kernen said. 'Have you seen what Batman is up against in Gotham, and what the guy running for mayor is up against? That's what it reminds me of. They're taking Wall Streeters and making them walk out onto the ice in the East River and hope– and then they fall through. I mean, there is a class warfare that's going on.' Kernen's remarks reflect growing unease in financial and political circles over Mamdani's platform, which includes rent freezes, tax hikes on the wealthy, free public transportation and city-run grocery stores. 3 Zohran Mamdani shocked observers by winning Tuesday's Democratic primary in the New York City mayoral race. Stephen Yang Mamdani's win, which was propelled by young and progressive voters, has rattled New York's political establishment. Newspapers sympathetic to the Democratic Party such as the New York Times and Chicago Tribune lobbied against Mamdani's candidacy, citing an agenda that critics have said is unrealistic. Mamdani's platform has also raised concerns it could drive businesses out of the city and burden taxpayers. His call to raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030 has drawn particular criticism from small business groups. Mamdani has also drawn backlash over his views on Israel and Jewish identity. He has referred to Israel's campaign in Gaza as 'genocide' and said he believes Israel should exist 'as a state with equal rights' rather than as a Jewish state. Jewish groups, including the Anti-Defamation League and US Holocaust Memorial Museum, condemned his refusal to disavow the slogan 'globalize the intifada,' which they say incites violence against Jews. 3 'The Dark Knight' tells the story of a fictional superhero Batman who fights rampant crime in Gotham City. Warner Brothers Establishment Democrats have distanced themselves, calling Mamdani 'too extreme.' His critics argue that the city lacks the infrastructure to implement sweeping reforms like public grocery stores, given the longstanding dysfunction at agencies like NYCHA. The Post has sought comment from Mamdani.
