Bursa closes slightly higher, improved sentiment fuelled interest in industrial stocks

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended slightly higher on Friday, supported by gains in industrial stocks as investor sentiment improved amid renewed optimism over global trade talks.
At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 0.24 per cent, or 3.76 points, to close at 1,546.50, up from Thursday's close of 1,542.74.
The broader market saw an even match, with 453 gainers and 453 losers, while 524 counters were unchanged.
UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said market sentiment was lifted by a positive lead from Wall Street.
This was driven by reduced trade tension concerns, especially after US President Donald Trump announced a proposed trade agreement with the United Kingdom, which encouraged a risk-on mood among investors.
"Locally, Malaysia continues to attract strategic interest from multinational investors. The European Union (EU) has signalled clear intent to elevate its economic ties with Asean, with Malaysia positioned as a key partner.
"According to the EU ambassador to Malaysia, Rafael Daerr, the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement is expected to serve as a critical instrument to strengthen bilateral trade and investment linkages," he said.
Sedek said this comes at a time when global markets remain vulnerable to protectionist shifts and policy uncertainty.
"Looking ahead, we maintain a positive view on the FBM KLCI's near-term trajectory, with the recent relief rally likely to continue.
"The benchmark index appears set to challenge the 1,555 resistance level - a threshold last tested in early March during a period of heightened tariff speculation - and may even extend toward 1,560 if momentum holds," he said.
Sedek said if the upcoming US-China trade discussions in Switzerland over the weekend result in meaningful progress, the FBM KLCI is likely to climb to the 1,565–1,575 range.
"However, if discussions break down or produce ambiguous outcomes, global risk sentiment may reverse, exerting downward pressure on regional markets, including Bursa Malaysia," Sedek adds.

Vietnam celebrates groundbreaking of US$300mil tech hub in Hanoi

Vietnam PM Pham Minh Chinh (centre) and delegates at the groundbreaking ceremony -- Photo: VNA HANOI (Vietnam News/ANN): Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on June 1 attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hanoi CMC Creative Space (CCS Hanoi), a US$300 million technology complex hailed as a key part of Vietnam's push for innovation and digital transformation. The project, led by private firm CMC Technology & Solution, located on an 11,000 sq.m site in Hanoi, will feature 23 floors above ground and three basements, with a total floor space exceeding 90,000 sq.m. Following the success of CMC's first creative space in Ho Chi Minh City - CCS Tan Thuan, this second facility will serve as an open artificial intelligence centre, dubbed It aims to house a comprehensive tech ecosystem, including a state-of-the-art data centre, research and development labs, training facilities, and a startup incubation zone, employing over 5,000 engineers. At the heart of the complex is the CMC Data Centre, designed to deploy cutting-edge technologies in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, big data, and next-generation networks. The ecosystem will also integrate 25 core technologies developed by CMC. In his address, PM Chinh praised the project as a testament to the private sector's role in advancing Vietnam's technological ambitions, aligning with the Party's policy of making breakthroughs in sci-tech, innovation, and digital transformation. With Vietnam targeting at least 8% economic growth in 2025 and double-digit expansion thereafter, he called for national unity to drive prosperity, safeguard its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He urged CMC to lead in sci-tech, innovation and digital transformation, inspiring other businesses, educational establishments, and research centres, particularly young people, to contribute to Vietnam's rapid and sustainable development. He expressed his hope that CMC would grow into a major multinational corporation integrated into global value chains while prioritising social welfare and equitable access to technology, especially for remote and vulnerable communities. The Government will always accompany companies, including CMC, and request ministries, agencies, and Hanoi authorities to further support them by promptly removing any obstacles to their growth, he concluded. - Vietnam News/ANN

Company director loses RM137,200 in fake govt tender scam in Kemaman

CHUKAI, June 1 — A company director lost RM137,200 after falling victim to a syndicate offering a fictitious government tender. Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the 52-year-old man was contacted via WhatsApp on May 13 by someone posing as a representative of a public university in Kelantan, offering a tender to supply 20 air-conditioning units and a power generator. 'To gain the victim's trust, the suspect sent four purchase orders allegedly issued by the secretary-general of the Higher Education Ministry, along with contact details of a supposed supplier,' he said in a statement today. The victim believed the offer and made seven bank transfers to an account under the name Gertrude Chee over a five-day period starting May 27. He later discovered the tender was a scam. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Police urge the public to verify any tender offers with the relevant authorities before making financial transactions. — Bernama

Accepting Tengku Zafrul into PKR opens door to uncertainty, says Rafizi

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said the criticisms levelled by Umno leaders against Tengku Zafrul Aziz were valid and deserve the attention of the unity government's leaders. KUALA LUMPUR : Accepting Tengku Zafrul Aziz into PKR will open the door to uncertainty in the cooperation among the unity government's components, says former party deputy president Rafizi Ramli. He said nothing in the draft unity government agreement, drawn up before its formation, forbids its components' leaders from joining other parties. 'This will need to be discussed among unity government components because this is a grey area. '(However, accepting Tengku Zafrul) should be avoided because it opens the door to uncertainty. 'Where do you draw the line when Umno leaders criticise (the move)?' he told reporters in Ampang today. When asked if PKR should also be open to its leaders moving to other parties, should it accept Tengku Zafrul into its ranks, Rafizi said the party's top leaders should come forward to explain the party's stance. He said the criticisms levelled by Umno leaders against Tengku Zafrul were valid and deserve the attention of the unity government's leaders. Earlier, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said it is 'very inappropriate for any party in the unity government to arbitrarily accept members from other allied parties'. 'This is to prevent causing disharmony among the parties in the unity government. This could lead to continuous prejudice and suspicion among grassroots members about the level of loyalty, sincerity and honesty that we have,' he said. Umno's legal bureau has also been asked to look into the implications of Tengku Zafrul's exit from the party in terms of the party hopping law and on his status as senator. The party's information chief, Azalina Othman Said, said while Umno respects a person's right to make political choices, Cabinet appointments are based on the party represented instead of one's individual capacity. She said while the prime minister chairs the national unity council, Cabinet ministers are appointed as the party's representatives. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul said he had submitted his resignation as an Umno member as well as from all party posts. He said he had informed PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh of his intention to join PKR.
