You get the feeling this was the kind of leaderboard organizers of LIV Golf envisioned from the beginning.
As the 2025 LIV campaign is winding to a close, some of the top names originally lured to the now-four-year-old circuit put on a show at Bolingbrook Golf Club near Chicago as Dustin Johnson — remember him? — and Sergio Garcia each sit atop the leaderboard after shooting rounds of 67.
And the big names just keep coming as you scan down the board: Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm are among a group that sits just one stroke behind the leaders.
For Johnson, who finished the most recent LIV Golf UK event in dead last at 9 over, this wasn't a matter of major strides, but simple tweaks.
"I feel like I'm always close, and it only takes a couple shots here or there where my game just clicks back and I start playing good again," he said. "Got off to a little bit of a shaky start today but then started hitting some quality shots and rolled in a couple putts and kind of turned it around and finished off with a nice solid day today.
"To be honest, even in the UK, I did not play nearly as bad as my score. I know my score was horrible, but I actually hit a lot of good shots. I felt like every time I hit a good shot it was a foot off from being really good and ends up in a bad spot. Obviously those greens and that golf course is pretty tricky. Just scored horribly."
While Johnson has struggled, finishing outside the top 25 in six of 11 starts in the 48-team league, the same can't be said for Mickelson, who is in position to post his best LIV season finish. On Friday, Mickelson was 5 under heading into the final two holes of the day and was atop the leaderboard. He made a pair of bogeys coming home, but he's still in a great spot as the weekend approaches.
"I really want to finish the year off right. I've played well this year, played consistent, and have had almost, with one or two exceptions, I've been in the top 24 each week, so I've played consistent," he said. "At 55, I think that's a cool accomplishment, and I would love to finish this year off right, move back up the list, and have two more solid finishes before we go to the Team Championship.
"That's more of just a personal goal of mine that I think to play against competition like this, Rahm and Bryson and Brooks and DJ and Cam Smith and Joaco and these guys, and to be able to hang, I think that would mean a lot to me."

Alex Weir's EDGA agony ends with dramatic Amateur Tournament win at the Kahkwa Club

EDGA president Dave Hewett announced Alex Weir's unprecedented achievement during the Aug. 10 awards ceremony for its Amateur Tournament. Weir became the first golfer in the competition's 105-year history who placed in the top three for five straight years. That would have been agonizing for the former Kahkwa Club employee to hear if he hadn't been holding its championship trophy for the first time. Weir, who also lost the EDGA's 2021 and 2022 Match Play finals, finally prevailed in one of its majors. He survived a dramatic dual, one that wasn't determined until the tournament's last shot. Garcia, who was four strokes out of first place at the start of the round, rallied to tie Weir at 7-under as they approached the par-4 18th hole. Each were on that green in two, but Garcia's three-putt bogey all but ended the possibility of a playoff. Weir, 36, ended his four-year run of near-misses when converted an easy par chance. The celebration began seconds later when three-year-old Carson and two-year-old Austin ran onto the course and hugged their father. Amy Weir also was in the gallery for her husband's victory, which he ranked first for his golf career. 'It's always hard to win the first one of these (EDGA tournaments),' Alex Weir said, 'and then there were all those (former) second-place finishes. And then Mike played especially well on the back nine. I was playing well, but he had all the momentum. Yeah, I started to wonder then if (an EDGA win) was ever going to happen. 'That's why this one is up there.' Weir closed with an even-par 72 for a 54-hole total of 209. Garcia, also a Kahkwa member, was the Amateur's silver medalist despite red numbers each round. His 6-under 210 consisted of 70-71-69. Matt Barto, the EDGA's 2022 Match Play victor, was third at 2-under 214. Former Cathedral Prep golfers Evan Rowane and Breckin Taylor tied for fifth at 3-over 219. Rowane was the tournament's 2024 winner. Taylor, thanks to June's Match Play win at Lake Shore Country Club, sought a sweep of the EDGA's 2025 majors. Mike Tomlin confirms he knew Packers legend Aaron Rodgers was signing with Steelers pre-NFL Draft

Mike Tomlin confirms he knew Packers legend Aaron Rodgers was signing with Steelers pre-NFL Draft originally appeared on The Sporting News The Pittsburgh Steelers have built their roster to make a serious run at the Super Bowl in what is widely believed to be Aaron Rodgers' final NFL season. Rodgers has been putting in work at training camp, and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark believes the veteran is starting to look like his former Super Bowl-winning self. 'I can confirm it AaronRodgers can still really throw the football… it's crazy in person! 2010-11 Super Bowl Flashbacks,' Clark posted. The Steelers' decision to wait until the offseason to sign Rodgers may have actually benefited the franchise, as it resulted in a lighter primetime schedule than if he had signed earlier. 'The Steelers not having a QB yet — and the uncertainty around Aaron Rodgers — may have worked in their favor. They got just 4 primetime games. If Rodgers had signed, they likely would've had 6+ and some holiday slots like the Jets had the last two years, which would've made for a much more unbalanced schedule,' Ari Meirov said. Pittsburgh showed notable patience throughout the process, and it's believed Rodgers gave them some kind of verbal commitment. 'I just think verbally, behind the scenes, not that he guaranteed it, but he's told [the Steelers], 'Listen, I'm gonna play for you. I just don't want to go there and then miss part of mandatory minicamp because of my personal issues. I'm pretty sure they're gonna be solved by the end of May, at least in my satisfaction where I can give you my all,'' Ian O'Connor said. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp On The Pivot Podcast, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that he knew Rodgers was coming, which is why the team didn't aggressively pursue a quarterback in the draft. 'Everything that we talked about through our conversations in the spring, I'm watching him live out right now in this training camp setting. I believed him when he said it, but it's fun to watch play out,' Tomlin said. 'And you're right I knew something.' Clark had asked him if he knew something was going to happen as to why they waited so long in the draft, to which Tomlin admitted he knew. This inside knowledge explains the team's calm demeanor throughout the lengthy negotiation process. It also sheds light on why the Steelers waited until later in the draft to select Will Howard. While fans and analysts were panicking, the organization knew something big was in the works.

'She Took Care Of Business': Himika Kicks Clear In Sorrento

'She Took Care Of Business': Himika Kicks Clear In Sorrento originally appeared on Paulick Report. Baoma Corp's Himika, the 1-5 favorite in a field of six fillies, overcame some tight quarters on the backside in the six-furlong Sorrento (G3) at Del Mar, but then drew clear late to click by 4 1/4 lengths in the Sunday feature. The bay daughter of Curlin won her second race in her second start and earned a first prize of $90,000 from the $150,500 purse. She now sports earnings of $126,000. Himika paid $2.40 to her backers in the sun-splashed crowd after covering the distance in 1:10.61. Juan Hernandez rode the juvenile miss for trainer Bob Baffert. It was the rider's third score in the Sorrento and the trainer's ninth. Finishing second in the sprint was Mo'Em Down, who had 3 1/4 lengths on Thank You third. Himika was bred in Kentucky by Klaravich Stables Inc. from the Into Mischief mare Motivated Seller. She was a $900,000 purchase in April at the OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where she was consigned by De Meric Sales. SORRENTO QUOTES JUAN HERNANDEZ (Himika, winner) – 'She broke just a bit slow and I saw that outside filly (My Kat) going fast, so I didn't want to have to start chasing. I sent my filly up between horses and she was comfortable with it. There was space there and it worked out fine. At the five-eighths (pole) she wanted to go, but I got her to wait. She took care of business in the stretch.' BOB BAFFERT (Himika, winner) – 'You always worry about the one hole. I think it was oh-fer-18 going six until Balboa (Race 1 winner) today. He had a hold of her since she stumbled there and she got behind a little bit. She's young, second out and all, but Juan rode her with a lot of confidence. He put her in the right spot and he had a lot of horse the whole way. When she got to the quarter pole, I felt pretty good about it.'
