7 Reasons to Buy Amazon Stock Like There's No Tomorrow

7 Reasons to Buy Amazon Stock Like There's No Tomorrow

Globe and Mail6 hours ago

Any negative Nellie can find things to dislike about Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). The stock remains down by a double-digit percentage below its previous high. The company could face a bumpy road if the Trump administration's steep tariffs remain in place. The Federal Trade Commission and 17 state attorneys general are going after Amazon in court for alleged monopolistic practices.
However, I think Amazon's positive Pollys have a stronger case than the negative Nellies. The e-commerce and cloud services giant's overall future remains bright, in my view. Here are seven reasons to buy Amazon stock like there's no tomorrow.
1. AI is only in its early innings
While artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted the world tremendously already, the technology is still only in its early innings. This bodes well for Amazon. Why? It's the world's largest cloud services provider, and AI will run primarily in the cloud.
I think Amazon is well-positioned to be a big winner as agentic AI hits its stride. The company should also profit hugely if and when artificial general intelligence (AGI) is ready, especially if Anthropic (an AI pioneer in which Amazon has invested heavily) emerges as an AGI leader.
2. E-commerce still has massive growth potential
Amazon generates most of its revenue from e-commerce. Although e-commerce isn't as big a growth driver for the company as its cloud business, it still has massive growth potential.
How much could Amazon's e-commerce business grow? CEO Andy Jassy noted in the company's October 2024 quarterly update that Amazon's share of the global retail market is only around 1%. Between 80% and 85% of that retail market is still in brick-and-mortar stores, with e-commerce making up the rest. Jassy predicted that this "equation is going to flip in the next 10 to 20 years." If he's right, Amazon should be one of the biggest beneficiaries.
3. Multiple other growth opportunities
AI and e-commerce aren't Amazon's only growth opportunities. The company has multiple "other bets" (to borrow a phrase from another giant AI leader) that could drive long-term growth.
Healthcare ranks as one of Amazon's most important areas for growth, thanks to its expansion into the online pharmacy and healthcare provider markets. The company's Project Kuiper satellite network could begin providing internet service later this year. I think Zoox, Amazon's autonomous ride-hailing business, could also move the needle over the long term.
4. An impressive financial pedigree
It takes money to make money. And Amazon has a lot of money. The company's cash stockpile tops $94 billion. Amazon's revenue continues to grow. Its profits are growing even more quickly, soaring 64% year over year in the latest quarter. Amazon is well-positioned to invest in future growth.
5. A culture of innovation
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos instilled a start-up mindset among employees that remains in place today, even though the company is now valued at around $2.2 trillion. He referred to this as a "Day One" culture. Amazon continues to look for new ways to innovate and new opportunities to grow.
Jassy expanded on this "Day One" perspective in his latest letter to shareholders. He wrote that Amazon also has a "why culture." Jassy explained that the company's employees "have to constantly question everything around us." He said that asking "why" has led to the major innovations that have led to Amazon's growth, from shifting from selling only books to selling all types of products to launching Amazon Web Services.
I think Amazon's culture of innovation, based upon thinking like a start-up and continually asking why, will lead to more game-changing products and services in the future.
6. A historically attractive valuation
At least at first glance, Amazon stock doesn't look like much of a bargain. The company's shares trade at nearly 34 times trailing 12-month earnings and more than 32 times forward earnings.
However, Amazon's valuation looks attractive compared to its historical levels. The stock is cheaper now than it's been since early 2009, when the U.S. economy began recovering from the Great Recession.

7. There is a tomorrow
Probably the best reason to buy Amazon stock like there's no tomorrow is that there is a tomorrow. Any challenges that the company faces from tariffs and macroeconomic uncertainty will be only temporary. Amazon has proven to be remarkably resilient in the past. It will almost certainly continue to be resilient in the future. If you're a positive Polly about Amazon, I suspect you'll make plenty of money over the long term.

Walmart's Push Into High-Margin Ventures: A Blueprint for Growth?

Walmart Inc. WMT is reshaping its growth strategy by doubling down on high-margin revenue streams — namely, advertising, memberships and marketplace expansion. This strategic shift is boosting profitability and reinforcing the company's leadership in the global retail landscape. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Walmart saw meaningful gains from its evolving business mix. Higher-margin categories like advertising and memberships were major contributors to profitability. The company's advertising revenues rallied 50% year over year, fueled in part by its December 2024 acquisition of VIZIO. This move brought VIZIO's SmartCast Operating System under the Walmart umbrella, enhancing Walmart Connect's ability to deliver personalized, scalable advertising solutions. Walmart Connect posted 31% growth in the United States, while Sam's Club advertising grew 21%. Internationally, ad revenues rose 20%, led by strong performance from Flipkart. Membership income also played a vital role. Overall membership fees rose nearly 15% year over year in the fiscal first quarter. Sam's Club U.S. saw solid gains in member growth, renewal rates and an increase in Plus memberships, driving a 9.6% rise in membership income. Walmart+ delivered double-digit income growth, while Sam's Club China membership income soared over 40%, driven by rising member adoption. Walmart is also scaling its third major growth pillar: marketplace and store-fulfilled delivery. This integrated ecosystem enhances operational efficiency and supports omnichannel retail engagement. By expanding these high-margin verticals, Walmart is positioning itself for sustainable earnings growth and improved shareholder value in a rapidly evolving retail environment. How WMT's Competitors Are Building New Profit Engines Some of WMT's competitors in the retail space are The Kroger Co. KR and Target TGT. The Kroger Co.'s alternative profit businesses, including retail media and health & wellness, continue to contribute to profitability. These businesses generated $1.35 billion in operating profit in fiscal 2024, supported by a 17% increase in retail media revenues. Kroger Precision Marketing ('KPM') is expanding rapidly, with increasing commitments from agencies, reinforcing its position as a high-margin growth driver. As digital engagement grows, Kroger remains focused on leveraging data-driven insights to enhance advertising effectiveness and drive sustained profitability in this segment. Target is accelerating its shift toward high-margin, non-merchandise revenue streams by scaling digital advertising and marketplace services. Roundel, Target's retail ad business, continues to benefit by driving higher engagement, performance and campaign success. Meanwhile, Target Plus — the company's third-party digital marketplace — also delivered double-digit growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. WMT's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of Walmart have gained 7.9% year to date compared with the industry 's growth of 8.1%. From a valuation standpoint, WMT trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 36.09X, above the industry's average of 33.08X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for WMT's fiscal 2026 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 3.2%, whereas its fiscal 2027 earnings estimate suggests a year-over-year uptick of 11.6%. Amazon to spend $20B on data centres in Pennsylvania

Photo by Ted Shaffrey / AP HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Amazon said Monday that it will spend $20 billion on two data center complexes in Pennsylvania, including one it is building alongside a nuclear power plant that has drawn federal scrutiny over an arrangement to essentially plug right into the power plant. Create Account Kevin Miller, vice president of global data centers at Amazon's cloud computing subsidiary, Amazon Web Services, told The Associated Press that the company will build another data center complex just north of Philadelphia. One data center is being built next to northeastern Pennsylvania's Susquehanna nuclear power plant. The other will be in Fairless Hills at a logistics campus, the Keystone Trade Center, on what was once a U.S. Steel mill. In a statement, Gov. Josh Shapiro called it the largest capital investment in Pennsylvania's history. The announcements add to the billions of dollars in Big Tech's data center cash already flowing into the state. Since 2024 started, Amazon has committed to about $10 billion apiece to data center projects in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina as it ramps up its investment in infrastructure to compete with other tech giants to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence products. The rapid growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has fueled demand for data centers that need power to run servers, storage systems, networking equipment and cooling systems. The majority owner of the Susquehanna nuclear power plant, Talen Energy, announced last year that it had sold its data center to Amazon for $650 million in a deal to eventually provide 960 megawatts. That's 40% of the output of one of the nation's largest nuclear power plants, or enough to power more than a half-million homes. However, the arrangement between Talen and Amazon — called a 'behind the meter' connection — has been held up by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the first such case to come before the agency. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. It has raised questions over whether diverting power to higher-paying customers will leave enough for others and whether it's fair to excuse big power users from paying for the grid. For Big Tech, plugging energy-hungry data centers directly into a power plant can take years off their development timelines and is a much faster route to procuring power than having to connect to the congested electricity grid. It's not clear when FERC, which blocked the deal on a procedural grounds, will decide the matter, leaving in limbo regulatory treatment of the deal and others that likely would follow. Already in Pennsylvania, Microsoft announced a deal with the owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant to restart the reactor under a 20-year agreement to supply its data centers in four states with energy. Meanwhile, the owners of what was once Pennsylvania's biggest coal-fired power plant say they will turn it into a $10 billion natural gas-powered data center campus.
