Rio Says Trump Tariffs Added $300 Million in Aluminum Costs

Yahoo12 hours ago
(Bloomberg) — Mining giant Rio Tinto Group (RIO) said US tariffs on its Canada-made aluminum (ALI=F) generated gross costs of more than $300 million in the first half, in another sign of how President Donald Trump's trade agenda is shaking up metals supply chains.

The world's second-biggest miner is also Canada's largest aluminum producer, and sells the vast bulk of the metal in the US. Rio said Wednesday it incurred gross costs of $321 million associated with US tariffs on aluminum, but added that a 'substantial part' has been clawed back from higher premiums on US sales.
Metals industries are adjusting to the trade tumult unleashed by Trump this year. He slapped blanket 25% import fees on steel and aluminum in March, before raising those to 50% in June. A planned 50% tariff on copper triggered market mayhem, and the administration is probing potential measures on other metals.
Rio said premiums in the US market — paid on top of exchange prices — rapidly adapted to the initial 25% tariff, but were not fully compensating for the 50% level by the end of the second quarter. The company shipped about 723,000 tons of aluminum to the US in the first half — equivalent to about three-quarters of its output from Canada.
Futures tracking aluminum prices in the US have pointed to higher costs for American buyers, and industry executives have warned the tariffs risk crushing American demand. Earlier this month, beverage maker Constellation Brands Inc. said it expects aluminum tariffs to cost the company about $20 million over the remainder of its fiscal year.
Contracts linked to the premium on the metal delivered to the Midwest have almost tripled this year to reach a record near 66 cents a pound.
'The impact of tariffs is still feeding through to inflation and sentiment,' Rio said in an overview of the US economy in its first-half production report.

Carney confirms possibility of lumber quotas in trade deal with the United States

HAMILTON — Prime Minister Mark Carney says any future trade deal with the United States could include "some element of managed trade," including quotas, on softwood lumber exports. Carney's comments come after B.C. Premier David Eby told Bloomberg News that the federal government has been speaking with the provinces about quotas to resolve the softwood lumber dispute. The prime minister says he's been in close contact with Eby about the softwood file, adding that resolving the conflict is a "top priority" as the United States prepares to double various duties to 34.45 per cent. Canada and the United States have been without a softwood lumber agreement since 2015, and Eby has previously said that resolving the dispute could "build momentum" for a larger, more comprehensive trade deal. U.S. President Donald Trump's latest threat is to impose 35 per cent tariffs by Aug. 1 on Canadian goods currently not compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Carney says he agrees with Eby's idea of resolving the softwood lumber dispute as part of a larger trade deal, but notes that both issues are unfolding along different times lines. — with files from David Baxter This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 16, 2025. Why Nvidia's China Comeback Could Propel Its Stock To New Heights

Needham analyst N. Quinn Bolton maintained a Buy rating on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and raised the price forecast from $160 to $200 on Wednesday. Nvidia is preparing to resume shipments of its H20 GPUs to China after the U.S. government approved export license filings, according to CEO Jensen Huang, Bolton noted. The green light comes after April's export controls blocked $2.5 billion in H20 shipments during fiscal first-quarter 2026 and halted another $8 billion in scheduled deliveries for fiscal second-quarter 2026, the analyst had already generated $4.6 billion in H20 revenue before the license requirement took effect and recorded a $4.5 billion charge for H20 inventory and purchase obligations in first-quarter, he told. Bolton responded by sharply raising his financial forecasts. He now conservatively projects $3 billion in H20 shipments per quarter over the coming quarters and estimates that previously written-down H20 inventory could generate nearly 100% gross margin when sold. Bolton also sees additional upside from Nvidia's expected launch of Blackwell GPU variants tailored for the Chinese market—B30 and B40/RTX 6000D—with performance estimated at ~75% of the H20. These variants, priced between $6,500 and $8,000 (versus $10,000–$12,000 for H20), are reportedly in high demand, with over $1 billion in orders already placed, he noted. Volume shipments could begin as early as August or September, he said. Reflecting these developments, Bolton increased his fiscal third-quarter and fourth-quarter 2026 revenue estimates by $4 billion each, fiscal 2027 revenue estimate to $265.0 billion and EPS to $6.20 (from $250.0 billion and $5.80), fiscal 2026 revenue to $202.6 billion and EPS to $4.42 (from $194.6 billion and $4.17). Bolton introduced fiscal 2028 estimates with $315.0 billion in revenue and EPS of $7.25, including $20 billion from China data center GPU sales Bolton noted Nvidia is well-positioned to recapture lost sales and gain further traction in China, even under export restrictions, thanks to rapid product adaptation and sustained demand from Chinese tech firms.
