Pope Leo XIV sends message of hope to Chicago and U.S. during White Sox broadcast
In his first words directed specifically to Americans, Pope Leo XIV told young people on Saturday how to find hope and meaning in their lives through God and in service to others.
'So many people who suffer from different experiences of depression or sadness — they can discover that the love of God is truly healing, that it brings hope,' the first American pope said in a video broadcast on the giant screen at Rate Field, the White Sox baseball stadium on Chicago's South Side.
The event — set in Leo's hometown and at the home stadium of his favorite major league team — was organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago in honor of his recent election as pope. Leo seized the opportunity to speak directly to young people, tying his message to the Roman Catholic Church's ongoing Jubilee year of hope that was declared by Pope Francis.
In Saturday's message, Leo urged those listening in the stadium and online to be beacons of hope capable of inspiring others.
'To share that message of hope with one another — in outreach, in service, in looking for ways to make our world a better place — gives true life to all of us, and is a sign of hope for the whole world,' he said.
The afternoon program, emceed by Chicago Bulls announcer Chuck Swirsky, highlighted Leo's roots, including music by the city's Leo Catholic High School Choir and a musician from Peru, where Leo lived and worked for years. There was also a discussion featuring a former teacher of the future pope as well as a high school classmate and fellow Augustinian.
The event also celebrated the mixing of Catholicism and baseball, including a special invitation from the team for Leo to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a future White Sox game.
Leo, formerly Robert Prevost, was elected May 8, becoming the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the church.
Leo, 69, spent his career serving as an Augustinian missionary and ministering in Peru before taking over the Vatican's powerful office of bishops. He succeeded Pope Francis, who died April 21.
'When I see each and every one of you, when I see how people gather together to celebrate their faith, I discover myself how much hope there is in the world,' Leo said in the video message.
The program was followed by a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago who was part of the conclave that elected Leo.

USMNT draw underwhelming crowd in Gold Cup opener amid recent string of controversies
Summary: T Suffice it to say the U.S. men's national soccer team was not a Father's Day draw. While the Americans easily handled Trinidad and Tobago en route to a 5-0 Gold Cup win that snapped their rare four-match losing streak, an announced crowd of 12,610 showed up to watch at 18,000-capacity PayPal Park. Far from the ringing endorsement the program could have hoped for on home soil with less than a year to go till the World Cup, such a turnout served as just another footnote amidst a recent string of USMNT turmoil. Star midfielder Christian Pulisic decided he would sit out the Gold Cup, then went podcasting to tell his side of the story after the backlash from fans and former players. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino subsequently offered a stern clarification of why Pulisic's special request to join the team for last week's friendly matches was promptly denied. A little more than two months after the USWNT sold out PayPal Park in a friendly loss to Brazil, the USMNT dominated a CONCACAF Gold Cup opener that at times felt more like an open scrimmage. Malik Tillman scored two goals with three others, including Patrick Agyemang, Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright, adding one apiece. Goalkeeper Matt Freese spent as much or more time near midfield as he did in his own box. It was no surprise to see the No. 16-ranked team, per FIFA, overwhelm the No. 100-ranked team. But the fact that the USMNT failed to fill up a small stadium fresh off of a record year in terms of home attendance overshadowed the details of their on-field performance Sunday. Across a dozen home matches in 2024, the USMNT averaged 37,925 fans, its highest average home attendance since 2015. The team's three Copa América matches certainly helped boost that figure. But even its lowest home attendance that year was a Toyota Field record of 9,191 fans. Seating fewer than three-quarters of PayPal Park reflected what's been a frustrating 2025 for the USMNT. Saturday's pre-Gold Cup press conference between Pochettino and 21-year-old midfielder Diego Luna lasted more than 30 minutes, with the first 23 exclusively featuring questions for Pochettino, who was frequently asked about Pulisic. The first time Luna spoke, he acknowledged the national team's need to play with more passion. 'The pride and the hungriness that we need to show, and the fight, is the biggest thing that I can say we're lacking right now,' said Luna, who subsequently recorded two assists as one of the bright spots for an especially young and unproven USMNT sans Pulisic. Pochettino, who was a September hire, recently said in a Fox Sports interview that soccer in the U.S. has only ever been 'a nice game to play' despite its resemblance to a 'sport war' internationally. He has said he aims to instill the fútbol culture he grew up with in the states. Sunday in San Jose, if anything, was a reminder of how challenging that will be to pull off.

US ends 4-game losing streak, routs Trinidad 5-0 in Gold Cup opener as Malik Tillman scores twice
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Malik Tillman scored twice as the United States built a three-goal, first-half lead and ended a four-game losing streak by routing Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 on Sunday in a CONCACAF God Cup opener. Tillman scored in the 16th and 41st minutes for his first two international goals, both following giveaways by Alvin Jones, and Patrick Agyemang scored his fourth international goal in the 44th. Brenden Aaronson added his ninth goal in the 82nd and Haji Wright his fifth just 1 minute, 13 seconds later as the 16th-ranked Americans overwhelmed the No. 100 Soca Warriors and ended their longest losing streak since 2007. Victory in the Group D opener came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic's desire to rest during the Gold Cup and coach Mauricio Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in. The U.S. had 70.5% possession and a 21-3 advantage in shots against the Soca Warriors, whose 2-1 home win against the Americans in 2017 ended a streak of seven straight World Cup appearances by the U.S. The Americans have won their group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, along with a second-place finish behind Panama in 2011, and improved their group stage record to 41 wins, one loss and five draws. They play invited guest Saudi Arabia on Thursday at Austin, Texas, then close group play on June 22 against Haiti at Arlington, Texas. Matt Freese was in goal in place Matt Turner, who had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 dating to the 2022 World Cup. The lone exception was a Gold Cup group stage game against St. Kitts and Nevis in 2023. Missing Pulisic , Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams , Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest , the U.S. starting lineup averaged 14.8 international appearances. That was the second-fewest for the Americans in a Gold Cup opener behind 9.8 against Bermuda in 2009, according to Opta. Adams (turf toe), Johnny Cardoso and Damion Downs (both illness) didn't dress. Defender Tim Ream started, extending his Gold Cup span for the U.S. to 14 years and surpassing DaMarcus Beasley (2002-15) for the American high. Trinidad, coached by former star Dwight Yorke, has lost four of its last five games. ___ AP soccer:

USA routs Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in Gold Cup opener, snaps four-game losing streak
The U.S. men's national team dominated Trinidad and Tobago in its opening Gold Cup match on Sunday, cruising to a decisive 5-0 win. Malik Tillman and Patrick Agyemang combined for three goals before halftime, while Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright came off the bench to add two more in the second. The strong and relentless performance by a young American squad was a complete 180-degree turn from the way the group looked over the last week in consecutive losses to Turkiye and Switzerland, which drew mounds of public criticism. While Trinidad and Tobago wasn't exactly the same caliber opponent, this is exactly how the U.S. wanted to begin tournament play. Here are takeaways from the match: McGlynn, Luna making early World Cup cases Jack McGlynn and Diego Luna, two midfielders who have already been bright spots for this team so far this calendar year, are certainly endearing themselves further to Pochettino and his staff. Sunday, Luna had two assists and should have scored in the first half. On the second goal in the 41st minute, Luna found himself alone streaking down the left wing. Rather than take a shot himself, he slipped a pinpoint pass to a streaking Tillman, who nailed the ball into the back of the net. On the third goal, Luna's shot deflected off Agyemang and bounced past goalkeeper Marvin Phillip. McGlynn, meanwhile, continually found himself in dangerous areas and was creative in the final third. Leading up to this match – and dating back to the Concacaf Nations League Finals in March – the USMNT struggled to finish. That wasn't an issue on Sunday, like on this opening goal in the first 15 minutes when McGlynn chipped the ball across the mouth of the goal to Tillman. Solid performance in goal by Freese Pochettino opted to play Matt Freese in goal over Matt Turner in the USMNT's first Gold Cup match. The manager had said he trusted Turner, but wanted to give Freese, who had one cap entering this game, more experience. While Trinidad and Tobago didn't threaten often – the USMNT out shot its opponent 21-3, 11-2 in shots on goal – Freese needed to spring into action a few times and was successful. Like on this early chance in the second half. Can we expect Pochettino to rotate goalkeepers throughout the Gold Cup? We'll see who he starts later this week when the U.S. faces Saudi Arabia in its second match. What's next for the USMNT? The Americans will travel to Austin where they'll face Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19 (9:15 p.m. ET on FOX) at Q2 Stadium. The Saudis, who are in the middle of 2026 World Cup qualifying, could prove to be a stiffer test for the U.S. than Trinidad and Tobago turned out to be. The team is led by manager Herve Renard, who was the squad's coach at the 2022 World Cup when it pulled off a massive group stage upset over eventual champion Argentina. The last time these nations met was the USMNT's final tune-up match before the 2022 World Cup and they tied 0-0 in Murica, Spain.
