Montgomery homers and drives in 5 to rally White Sox past Rays 11-9

TAMPA, Fla. — Colson Montgomery hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run double in the eighth, rallying the Chicago White Sox to an 11-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. Kyle Teel launched his first major league homer for the White Sox, who trailed 4-0 after the first and 7-5 through seven. He finished with four hits and scored three times. Chicago (37-66) took two of three games from the Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field to complete a 5-1 trip. Tampa Bay (53-50) has lost 11 of 16. Montgomery, a rookie shortstop called up to the majors on July 4, connected off starter Taj Bradley for his second big league homer and set a career high with five RBIs. Tampa Bay opened the bottom of the first with four straight hits off Jonathan Cannon, including two-run homers by Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero. Handed a 4-0 lead, however, Bradley gave up four runs in the second and didn't get through the inning. He was optioned to Triple-A Durham after the game. Chicago trailed 7-5 before scoring six times in the eighth. Teel singled home a run and Montgomery smacked a go-ahead double off the center-field wall. A throwing error by second baseman José Caballero allowed another run to score, and RBI singles by Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth capped the outburst. Jordan Leasure (3-5) worked a scoreless seventh for the win. Dan Altavilla got three outs for his third major league save and second this season. Rays reliever Kevin Kelly (0-2) entered with a two-run lead and got only one out. He was charged with six runs, five earned, four hits and two walks. Cannon regrouped to strike out a career-high nine over 4 1/3 innings, but was tagged for six runs — five earned — and seven hits. ... Díaz's home run pushed him past 400 career RBIs. The White Sox host the crosstown-rival Chicago Cubs on Friday night, with Adrian Houser (5-2, 1.89 ERA) on the mound. Zack Littell (8-7, 3.52) starts Friday for the Rays in Cincinnati. ___ AP MLB:

Rays option Taj Bradley to Triple-a Durham after poor start

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-hander Taj Bradley to Triple-A Durham following his poor start in Wednesday night's 11-9 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Once a top pitching prospect, the 24-year-old Bradley was handed a 4-0 lead after the first inning against the last-place White Sox (37-66), but he couldn't get through the second, allowing four runs, four hits, and three walks. White Sox rookie Colson Montgomery tied the score with a three-run homer off Bradley. 'Tough decision certainly, but felt like it's best for him to get down there right now,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'He's got to get to work... It's probably a better environment for him to work rather than compete every single pitch. We know that Taj Bradley is massive to our success, and we need to get him back to the form that we know he's capable of.' The move, described by team officials as a strategic reset rather than a disciplinary action, comes as Bradley's performance at the major league level has been inconsistent. Through 21 starts this season, he is 6–6 with a 4.61 ERA, raising concerns about his command and mental approach. In the minors, Bradley will work to regain command of his secondary pitches, such as his changeup and slider. Meanwhile, the Rays plan to rely more heavily on pitchers such as Joe Boyle and Mason Englert to stabilize the rotation.

Colson Montgomery drives in five as White Sox overtake Rays

July 24 - Rookie Colson Montgomery hit a three-run homer and a go-ahead, two-run double, helping the Chicago White Sox rally for an 11-9 win against the host Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Reliever Jordan Leasure (3-5) tossed a scoreless seventh for the White Sox, who took two of three in the series and have won five of six. Tampa Bay fell for the third time in four games. Trailing 7-5 in the eighth, Chicago rallied for six runs against reliever Kevin Kelly (0-2). Kyle Teel's RBI single made it 7-6, and a bases-loaded double from Montgomery drove in two more to put the White Sox in front 8-7. A throwing error by second baseman Jose Caballero allowed Luis Robert Jr. to cross the plate before Mike Tauchman singled home Montgomery. After Ian Seymour took over on the mound, Chase Meidroth connected for an RBI single to make it 11-7. The Rays narrowed the deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Tyler Gilbert issued a bases-loaded walk to Jonathan Aranda before Junior Caminero's RBI groundout cut the margin to 11-9. White Sox starting pitcher Jonathan Cannon settled down after giving up four runs in the first. However, he got into trouble again in the fifth, and Tampa Bay took advantage. With two on and one out, Cannon plunked Caminero in the back with a pitch to load the bases, ending his outing. Josh Lowe greeted reliever Brandon Eisert with an RBI single to put the Rays ahead 5-4, and Tampa Bay added another run when White Sox left fielder Brooks Baldwin failed to catch Jake Mangum's fly ball. Caminero appeared to add another when he was ruled safe as the ball got away on a strikeout. However, the White Sox challenged and the call was overturned to an out at the plate. Teel's first major league home run in the top of the sixth narrowed the gap to 6-5, but Caballero singled to drive in Taylor Walls in the bottom of the inning, making it 7-5. The Rays opened the scoring in the first with a pair of two-run homers. Yandy Diaz put a sinker over the right field wall, and Caminero sent one to right-center for a 4-0 lead. Chicago responded in the second. Miguel Vargas scored on Robert's single, and Montgomery's three-run shot tied it 4-4. Cannon allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk while logging a career-high nine strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Rays starter Taj Bradley was tagged for four runs on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. He didn't strike out a batter. --Field Level Media
