Temporary bridges washed away, halts traffic on SH-40 for 3 weeks

Koraput: Vehicular movement between Nabarangpur town and Umerkote, around 60km apart, has been disrupted for the past three weeks after temporary bridges were swept away by heavy rainfall in late June.

Traffic on SH-40, the lifeline of Nabarangpur district, has come to a standstill, causing severe hardship to commuters and halting heavy vehicles.
With SH-40 now blocked, buses and smaller vehicles are being forced to take detours of over 20km to bypass a mere 3-km stretch. "This has led to increased travel costs and longer journey times. Passengers are reporting inflated fares and delays in reaching Umerkote," said Nikunja Patnaik, a Nabarangpur-based activist.
"The administration should take immediate steps to ensure the restoration of traffic between Nabarangpur and Umerkote on SH-40," he added.
Officials said the temporary structures near Nangi tiver at Dhodra and Peta Phula nullah near Jatabal were constructed to maintain traffic flow during a road-widening project under the Nabarangpur works division. However, both makeshift bridges collapsed on June 24 following downpour.
"Movement of all heavy vehicles remains suspended, and traffic is being rerouted through Papadahandi-Jambaguda-Manigaon and Maidalpur-Dabugaon-Medena-Jharigaon," said Harekrushna Rout, an engineer of the public works division, Nabarangpur.
The roads built under PMGSY were not designed to handle such high volumes of traffic and are rapidly deteriorating. Rout said that detour routes are developing potholes and even bridge sags near joint sections.

"The situation may worsen if the volume of traffic remains high," he said.
Construction of a high-level bridge at Jatabal at an estimated Rs 6.99 crore is underway. The 80-m-long, 12-m-wide structure has faced delays due to issues with design approvals and the shifting of electric poles.
"If rainfall reduces, the diversion bridge near Jatabal will be completed within three days and traffic flow can resume," Rout assured, noting that construction is going on round the clock

Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune express trains flagged off

In a major boost to inter-state travel, Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune Express trains were flagged off on Sunday. The new services are set to improve connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav flagged off the new services via video conferencing from Bhavnagar and Ujjain, respectively. The launch also marked the commencement of a new Bhavnagar-Ayodhya Express train service. An official release stated that the new services would enhance connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The new trains connecting Jabalpur with Raipur, Rewa with Pune (Hadapsar), and Bhavnagar with Ayodhya mark a significant expansion of the national railway network, it said. Addressing the event, Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Modi shares an emotional bond with the Indian Railways, which is the mainstay of travel for the poor and middle classes. Live Events "The Central government had undertaken a mission to modernise the railway network in the last 10 to 11 years. Introduction of new trains, modern coach manufacturing, and station redevelopment are historic undertakings," he added. He said the new Rewa-Pune link would improve connectivity while the Jabalpur-Raipur train would benefit tribal regions. "Today, Madhya Pradesh is getting direct rail links with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra," Yadav said. He said the launch of Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune Express trains would boost passenger movement, trade, and tourism. "Tourists will find it easier to visit the tiger safari in Rewa and seek blessings at the Sharda Devi temple in Maihar (in the Vindhya area)," he added. Yadav said the new train service would increase footfall in Jabalpur, which houses Bhedaghat, the world's famous rock formation site, and deepen inter-state ties with Chhattisgarh. He stated that Indian Railways had achieved full electrification over the past 11 years. "Under PM Modi's leadership, a budgetary allocation of Rs 2.65 lakh crore had been made for 2025-26 and the railway sector was achieving new milestones under Railway Minister Vaishnaw," he said. Referring to the Bhavnagar-Ayodhya Express, Yadav said it symbolically connects devotees with Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, "through whom India has been known across the world".

Mumbai To Ahmedabad In 2 Hours: Indias First Bullet Train To Start Soon; Check Expected Speed

India's First Bullet Train: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday announced that India's first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will begin operations very soon, reducing travel time between the two cities to just 2 hours and 7 minutes. He was speaking to reporters at the Bhavnagar terminus in Gujarat after virtually flagging off three trains, namely the Ayodhya Express, Rewa Pune Express, and Jabalpur Raipur Express. He further stated that the bullet train project is progressing rapidly. 508-Kilometre Rail Corridor The 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor will connect Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) with key cities in Gujarat, including Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. The trains are expected to run at speeds of up to 320 km/h. Vaishnaw also outlined several upcoming railway projects in Gujarat, including a new Porbandar–Rajkot train, a Rs 135-crore coach maintenance facility at Ranavav station, a railway flyover in Porbandar, two Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and a container terminal at a developing port in Bhavnagar. He highlighted the nation's progress, saying that during the last 11 years, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been installed under the PM Narendra Modi administration, averaging almost 12 km per day. He described the 1,300 railway stations undergoing renovation as an unprecedented endeavour in the history of Indian Railways. PM Modi's Vision Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that India is implementing this change while maintaining train operations and keeping stations operational, which reflects the scope of PM Modi's vision, in contrast to developed nations, where station redevelopment entails completely stopping services. Adding further, he cited the introduction of contemporary trains such as the Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat Express, and the Namo Bharat Express. Eight Amrit Bharat trains with high-class amenities and reasonably priced tickets have been introduced thus far. According to the minister, passengers have responded favorably to these new trains, which were constructed using cutting-edge technology. With the help of double-engine governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, significant railway projects are also progressing in those states, in addition to Gujarat, the minister highlighted.
