Hyena Spotted Near Madhya Pradesh Village Where 6 Died In Attack By Unidentified Animal
Indore: In the wake of death of six persons after being bitten by an unidentified animal in Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district recently, the forest department has intensified its search operation after local residents informed the authorities about sighting a hyena in the area, officials said on Wednesday. Prima facie, the yet-to-be-identified animal that attacked the villagers was infected with rabies virus, although the investigation report is awaited to confirm it, they said. An unidentified animal attacked 17 people in Limbai village and its surrounding areas in the early hours of May 5 when they were asleep outside their homes due to heat. Six of these 17 people died between May 23 and June 2. After being bitten by the animal, all the 17 people had been given anti-rabies vaccines, the officials said. Talking to PTI, Forest Range Officer (Ranger) Vikas Jamre said, "People of Limbai village have informed us that a hyena was spotted in the surrounding areas. Pugmarks suspected to be of the animal have also been found there. After this, we have intensified our search operation." Forty-five personnel of the forest department are involved in the operation to search the hyena within the 15-km radius of Limbai village. The forest boundary is about 4.50 km away from the village, he said. "The suspected pugmarks of the hyena are being investigated. It has not been confirmed yet whether these footprints are of a hyena," Jamre said. Barwani's Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Surekha Jamre said, "A 35-year-old man among those who fell ill after the attack by the unknown animal is admitted in the district hospital and his condition is stable. Remaining others are also fine." The brain tissue of the person who died after being bitten and saliva samples of the surviving patients have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune to confirm whether they were infected with rabies virus or not, she said. Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, dean of Indore-based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, said, "We suspect that six people from Barwani district have died due to rabies. To confirm this, the brain tissue of a deceased person has been sent to a laboratory in Delhi for testing. Its report is awaited." 8 Snakes Rescued From UP House 2 Days After Villagers Kill 52 Serpents
Meerut: Two days after the residents of Samouli village in Meerut district killed 52 snakes that crawled out of the courtyard of a farmer's house, forest officials rescued eight snakes from the same house under the Daurala police station limits, officials said on Wednesday. According to the forest department, the non-venomous snakes were safely removed by a rescue team after they were found at the residence of Mahfooz Saifi on Tuesday night. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajesh Kumar told PTI on Wednesday that the rescued snakes appeared to be of non-venomous species. "It is likely that the snakes laid eggs in the house earlier, which are now hatching in phases," Kumar said. Aditya Tiwari, a herpetologist who runs an NGO, said the snakes likely belonged to the checkered keelback species, a water snake. "This species is non-venomous, and a female can lay up to 40-50 eggs at a time," he said. The recurring incidents have triggered panic in the village, with locals demanding a permanent solution to the issue. The forest department has urged residents not to harm snakes and to report such sightings to the authorities immediately. Officials also reminded people that killing snakes is a punishable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, and strict action will be taken against the violators. On Sunday, the village witnessed a startling sight when more than 100 snakes crawled out of the courtyard of Saifi's house, triggering panic in the area. After the initial shock, the villagers joined Saifi and his family and killed as many as 52 snakes, which they buried in a pit. The DFO told PTI on Monday that a team was dispatched to the spot for investigation after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The snakes turned out to be creatures protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he said.

Normally the dates for a Parliament session are announced a few days in advance. Never have the dates been declared 47 days before a session is due. This has been done solely to run away from the demand being made repeatedly by the Indian National Congress and the INDIA parties… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) June 4, 2025 'This has been done solely to run away from the demand being made repeatedly by the Indian National Congress and the INDIA parties for an immediate special session to discuss the brutal Pahalgam attacks and the failure to bring the terrorists who did the killings themselves to justice, the impacts of Operation Sindoor and its blatant politicisation, the revelations of the CDS in Singapore, the hyphenation of India and Pakistan, the embedding of China in the Pakistan Air Force, the continuous claims of President Trump on mediation, and the numerous failures of our foreign policy and diplomatic engagements,' he said in his post. 'The monsoon session will, however, still be dominated by these issues of supreme national importance. The PM has run away from a special session but will have to answer very tough questions six weeks from now,' the Congress leader said. 'Rajnath Singh's recommendation will be sent to the President for convening the session,' Mr. Rijiju said. The announcement by Mr. Rijiju comes against the backdrop of a demand for a special session by Opposition leaders to discuss Operation Sindoor.
