
Cisco says open to 'opportunistic acquisitions' to achieve vision
SAN DIEGO: The US multinational
Cisco
that it is ready to acquire companies opportunistically, strategically aligning to achieve a broader vision.
"If an acquisition can help accelerate achieving vision, then we won't be shy to apply our knowledge into it," Jeetu Patel, President and Chief Product Officer at
Cisco Systems
, told ET, adding that the company's "acquisition strategy is opportunistic."
In more than 30 years, the US multinational acquired over 200 mid-to-large sized companies.
Cisco is aggressively driving its artificial intelligence (AI)-led portfolio across networking, security and data centres.
Last year, San Jose-based Cisco acquired
Splunk
in a $28 billion deal in a bid to advance
AI-driven portfolio
and future-proof its customers. The merger enabled Cisco to become one of the largest software companies worldwide.
"If something comes up that we think is going to go on further or pause, we won't be shy to deploy our balance sheet, but otherwise we are building, we are going to be great builders first, and we will acquire opportunistically when we want to make sure that we can augment in the building exercise," the top executive said.
Back in 2020, it had also acquired ThousandEyes Inc., a cloud intelligence platform provider to offer customers a visibility into the digital delivery of applications and services over the internet, enabling them to find deficiencies and improve network and application performance across enterprise and cloud networks.
In 2017, Cisco acquired
AppDynamics
which is now a part of the company's Observability portfolio.
The company said that it is reinventing infrastructure for the next wave of AI.
"The success of AI as we go forward is this notion of trust where safety and security are prerequisites for AI taking off," Patel said separately.
"Cisco is the infrastructure provider that's going to work with the ecosystem for AI build-outs and we are going to make sure that we help with the transition to the agentic era for every company of every size whether it's a hyperscaler, neocloud, service provider or an enterprise of any size or scale."
With an array of innovations around feature-proofing workplaces, Cisco said that it has refreshed and simplified its portfolio to make it more user-friendly. These include Agile Service Networking, Unified Nexus Dashboard, Live Protect, Unifying Catalyst and Meraki, Smart Switches, and Cisco Cloud Control.

Rapido's food delivery entry unlikely to dent duopoly, say brokerages
Rapido's foray into food delivery through a pilot in Bengaluru is unlikely to materially disrupt the entrenched duopoly of Zomato and Swiggy, multiple brokerages said in separate notes, citing the operational complexity, capital intensity and customer experience challenges inherent to the business. TOI reported on Monday, Bengaluru-based Rapido is currently preparing to launch its food delivery service with a fundamentally different pricing structure, choosing flat fees over traditional percentage commissions charged to restaurants. The move positioned the ride-hailing firm as a challenger to Zomato and Swiggy at a time when small restaurant owners are increasingly vocal about rising aggregator costs. Rapido plans to charge a fixed Rs 25 on food orders below Rs 400 and Rs 50 for those above. These charges are flat fees deducted from the order value, paid by the restaurant to Rapido. Bernstein's Rahul Malhotra noted that while Rapido plans to leverage its over 3 million rider base and charge lower take rates, 'new entrants have been unsuccessful in the past.' Malhotra cited prior attempts by Amazon, Ola and ONDC that failed to scale due to limited restaurant selection, fragmented supply, and weak customer experience. He added that India's food delivery market, dominated by Zomato and Swiggy with 54 per cent and 46 per cent market shares respectively, has become operationally complex with over 200,000 to 300,000 restaurants, posing high barriers to scale for new players. Elara Capital's Karan Taurani acknowledged Rapido's cross-utilisation model, where its rider network may reduce incremental capital expenditure. However, Taurani warned that 'the absence of a dedicated fleet may compromise the delivery experience, especially with rising sub-30 minute delivery expectations.' Elara's sensitivity analysis suggested that even a moderate impact from Rapido could lead to a 6 per cent cut in the target price of Eternal (Zomato), should revenue growth or valuation multiples weaken due to pricing pressures. HSBC analysts Yogesh Aggarwal, Prateek Maheshwari and Sagar Desai pointed out that while the underlying cost structures of two-wheeler ride-sharing and food delivery are similar, scaling food delivery demands sustained execution. They argued that "customer experience, ability to execute, and achieving scale remain key challenges" for Rapido. The analysts also flagged that long-term industry growth is already moderating, with most of the incremental demand expected to come from higher order frequencies rather than significant customer base expansion. Kotak Institutional Equities, in its sector alert, described Rapido's entry as having 'no immediate impact' on the incumbents. It reiterated that Zomato and Swiggy have built significant operational moats in logistics, customer loyalty, and dense restaurant partnerships, making material share shifts unlikely in the near term.

Govt gives 48-hour ultimatum to MSC Shipmanagement to begin oil extraction from MSC ELSA 3
MUMBAI: The government has given a 48-hour ultimatum to MSC Shipmanagement Ltd to start work on extraction of oil from the sunken ship MSC ELSA 3 off the coast of Kerala or face legal consequences for 'continued inaction and delay representing not only negligence but also a violation of statutory obligations' in the backdrop of imminent environmental and economic threat posed to the Indian coastline and its coastal communities. The oil extraction work was slated to start around June 5 but has not even begun, the Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, wrote in a June 11 notice issued to MSC Shipmanagement, the Cyprus-based ship management unit of Mediterranean Shipping Company, S.A., the world's biggest container shipping line and the operator of MSC ELSA 3. Voicing increasing concern on the progress made in salvage and emergency response operations of the sunken container ship, the D G Shipping said that it was 'grossly inadequate and continues to fall short of the timelines and operational commitments previously provided by the salvors (T&T Salvage) and the owner of the ship'. Despite repeated instructions and coordination meetings, the response from the salvors has been 'consistently delayed and insufficient', the country's maritime regulator said. 'The lack of prompt action has resulted in a continued and serious risk to the marine environment and coastline of India, particularly affecting the coastal regions of Kerala. The region's local communities, which heavily rely on fishing for their livelihoods, have already suffered extensive loss of work and income due to the prolonged presence of the sunken vessel, floating debris, oil sheen, and ongoing pollution risk,' Jagannathan wrote in the notice. The ship was carrying 367.1 metric tonnes of very low sulphur fuel oil and 84.4 metric tonnes of diesel in its tanks when it capsized and sank on May 25. Recalling that salvors were clearly advised to mobilise necessary assets required for diving and oil recovery operations as early as the first day of the incident, the D G Shipping noted that the Diving Support Vessel (DSV) and necessary diving assets were not mobilised until after May 30. 'This initial delay set back the entire timeline for the operation. Even the tug assets hired by the owners arrived on scene only after June 1, with no prior deployment initiated by the salvors,' he told MSC Shipmanagement. While it was abundantly clear considering the depth of the water (51 meters) that saturation diving was required for the extraction of oil from the vessel, the salvors have, to date, been able to conduct only limited air diving operations, which are inadequate for the extraction of oil from the tanks of the sunken vessel. 'The timeline provided for these operations has been grossly violated. Capping of vents, which was scheduled for completion earlier this month, is still being conducted at present. The extraction of oil, originally scheduled to commence around June 5, 2025, has not even begun as of this date,' Jagannathan pointed out. The delay, Jagannathan wrote, is 'even more unacceptable' considering that the western coast of India, including Kerala, is entering its monsoon season - a period during which offshore salvage operations become highly unsafe or entirely unfeasible due to harsh weather conditions. 'The salvage operation was provided a short weather window to conduct these critical activities, and that window has now largely been lost as a direct consequence of the salvors' failure to timely deploy assets and personnel,' he said. The salvors had committed to arrange expert saturation divers and a team for the specialised equipment from 11 countries. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), to assist the salvors, had written directly to the Indian Embassies and High Commissions in these countries to expedite visa clearances. 'Yet, it has come to light that several visa applications were not even filed by the salvors, resulting in continued non-availability of the saturation divers even at this stage,' the D G Shipping stated. 'This consistent inaction and delay represent not only negligence but also a violation of statutory obligations. Should the extraction of oil not commence within the next 48 hours, the government of India shall be left with no alternative but examine all avenues against the shipowners and salvors under applicable Indian legislation for the continuing threat posed to Indian waters and the coastal environment,' the D G Shipping told MSC Shipmanagement. 'Your actions (or lack thereof) may attract prosecution and penalties under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958; Environment (Protection) Act 1986; Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; Disaster Management Act, 2005, and any other applicable provisions under Indian maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster management laws,' Jagannathan wrote in the notice. 'Any further delay beyond the specified period will be treated as wilful and deliberate noncompliance, and the government shall proceed to exercise its full legal rights and remedies without further reference,' he added.

German medical tech firm Brainlab plans Frankfurt IPO in coming weeks
Berlin: German medical technology firm Brainlab is planning an initial public offering on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the coming weeks, the company said on Thursday. The Munich-based company said it will list on the regulated market and aims to raise up to 200 million euros ($230 million) through the issuance of new shares. The firm will use the capital increase to grow its business, with a focus on expanding into additional clinical applications, as well as strengthen its balance sheet. The current owners also plan to place additional secondary shares to ensure significant free float, said the company. Majority shareholder Stefan Vilsmeier , who founded the company 35 years ago and recently announced his retirement from the operational business, is set to continue to support the company as a long-term investor. The initial public offering is being organised by Berenberg, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Jefferies, and UniCredit. Evercore is also advising the company, which has around 2,000 employees. Brainlab's main products include software systems that are used as navigational tools by surgeons, for example during brain and hip surgery, and for spinal implants and fractures.
