On the latest episode of the Daily Mail's Pipeline podcast, reporter Isabelle Stanley examines the chilling theories as to why Paria blocked efforts to rescue four men trapped in an underwater oil pipe.
From compensation plots to international conspiracy, Stanley interviews legal experts and journalists to test the credibility of theories that emerged in the wake of the Caribbean Diving Disaster.
In February 2022, five divers were sucked hundreds of feet into a 30-inch pipe they were repairing off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago.
Despite one of the divers, Christopher Boodram, escaping after an unimaginable three-hour ordeal, rescue attempts for the remaining four were repeatedly blocked, leaving them to die slowly in what became a national scandal.
The pipe was managed by Paria, one arm of Trinidad's state-owned oil company.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Trinidad's then-Energy Minister Stuart Young launched an official enquiry, led by one of the UK's top international criminal barristers, Jerome Lynch KC.
Lynch concluded that the four divers weren't rescued because of a series of mistakes, incompetence and inaction by Paria.
Despite his recommendation that the oil company be charged with corporate manslaughter, police have issued only vague statements that an investigation remains ongoing
Despite his recommendation that the oil company be charged with corporate manslaughter, police have issued only vague statements that an investigation remains ongoing.
This stalemate and lack of closure has created an information vacuum - which residents of Trinidad have filled with hundreds of theories, trying to work out why Paria abandoned the rescue effort.
Rightly or wrongly, the victims' families wonder if there is something more… another reason to explain why their loved ones were left to die - something other than pure negligence or incompetence.
Prakash Ramadhar, a lawyer representing two of the victims' families, told the podcast that he believes the oil giant may have thwarted a rescue to avoid the costs associated with caring for the injured divers if they had been pulled out alive.
He claims any survivors may have suffered life-changing injuries, creating lifelong financial liability for the company.
Mr Ramadhar said: 'I believe that Paria's initial belief was that they all had perished and if they had not perished, they would soon perish.
'As crass as it may sound, there is a belief in the legal fraternity that it may have been cheaper to allow the men to die than it was to rescue them, broken and maimed.
'Ensuring their medical wellbeing and upkeep for their rest of their lives is far more expensive than allowing them to die.'

Chris Robshaw's stalker ‘threatened to call social services' leaving Strictly star ‘terrified he'd lose his kids'

STRICTLY star Chris Robshaw's stalker called in bomb threats and 'threatened reporting him to social services' - with the star 'terrified he'd lose his kids'. The Sun told how Chris had called in police after a terrifying campaign of harassment by a female stalker. 4 4 4 The woman, who The Sun is not naming, now appears on the National Police Wanted List. She is understood to have left the country and is being sought by cops. Those close to Chris previously revealed his ordeal started last July when he attended the same event as the woman. A representative for Chris told The Sun: "This is an ongoing police investigation, and therefore we are unable to comment at this time. "Chris will not be commenting further.' According to Daily Mail, the 'violent' stalker's actions have included threatening to spread lies about Chris and his wife, Opera singer Camilla Kerslake to social services. A source told the publication: "One of the most terrifying things has been the suggestion that her lies could get their kids could be taken away - it's left them shaken to the core." The source also said: "This isn't just someone making empty threats. "According to other victims, this individual has allegedly set fires, made bomb threats, and has even threatened to blow up children at their schools. While a source previously told The Sun: 'It's been absolutely terrible for Chris and Camilla. 'He met this woman twice, very briefly, during work events and then she started telling all sorts of awful lies about him. 'He was never alone with her and they barely spoke so he's got no idea why she targeted him. 'The stuff she was coming up with was farcical. She then started calling companies Chris and Camilla were working with to tell them these made up lies. "She is intent on trying to ruin Chris and Camilla's life. Her other victims are said to have struggled professionally, financially, and mentally. 'Chris warned police the minute his children were put into danger. "This woman posted their address online and made really nasty threats against him and his family.' Those close to Chris - who is set to star in this year's Strictly - said the BBC are aware of the ongoing issues and are supporting him. A friend said: 'Chris almost turned down Strictly because of what this woman has been putting him and his family through. 'She's made some disgusting threats. It has been awful for them. 'Chris and Camilla have been told by the police they're not alone. This woman has form for what she's been doing to them and has done it to other people too. 'Chris and Camilla are just the latest victims in a string of lives she's tried to destroy. 'He only went ahead with Strictly for his son Wilding. 'He told his dad: 'I want mummy to laugh at your dancing'. So Chris bit the bullet and went for it. 'He was honest with the BBC from the start and they've been amazing. 'They are supporting him and are aware of everything that is going on.'

Terrifying moment Reggie the dolphin 'nearly drowns' pair of swimmers by repeatedly pushing them underwater in Dorset bay - as experts warned he could hurt naïve tourists

A group of kayakers have claimed they were forced to rescue swimmers after Reggie the dancing dolphin started to 'nearly drown' two women - days after marine experts warned he could go on the attack. The solitary bottlenose dolphin, believed to be a young male, captured hearts after video emerged of him excitedly playing with a family and asking for belly rubs in Lyme Bay, Dorset, earlier this month. But experts have warned that Reggie could become increasingly aggressive and launch a fatal attack due to the amount of human interaction he is engaging with. The Daily Mail understands that the mammal arrived on its own in Lyme Bay in February, sparking concern from marine experts as dolphins usually travel together in pods. The dolphin has become a frequent sight in Lyme Bay, but in July it suffered a nasty gash which is believed to have been caused by a boat propellor. Footage then emerged of the creature leaping vertically out of the water before swimming in and around Lynda MacDonald, 50, her partner, her son and his girlfriend on August 3. Now kayaker, Rhys Paterson, 32, has revealed how he was forced to intervene, along with another boater, after Reggie began jumping on top of a woman swimming off the beach in Lyme Regis - pushing her head repeatedly under the water. Footage shows the swimmer saying 'It scared me to death! Oh my goodness!' before being pushed under the waves on August 14. Rhys, a development director from Lyme Regis, said the filmed incident was not the only confrontation and the dolphin appeared to be 'targeting women in wetsuits'. 'We saved two swimmers who were fairly deep, where the dolphin kept jumping on them,' he said. 'The dolphin was basically drowning this woman - it kind of jumped on her back four times.' Describing how he and his brother, Gareth, came across the scene, Mr Paterson said: 'We had been following the dolphin for a little bit, because obviously, it's quite a local legend at the minute. 'But when we realised it wasn't playing it was quite a big shock. 'People need to understand that it's not an amusement arcade. It's a wild animal. It can snap all of a sudden if it wants to.' It comes after the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) warned the public to keep away from the lone dolphin. The organisation said human interaction can make dolphins lose their natural wariness, leading to 'injury or death'. Jess Churchill-Bissett, head of marine conservation (wildlife) at MMO, said: 'Repeated human interaction inevitably disrupt their natural behaviours, increasing stress and potentially altering their temperament. 'Once habituated to humans, dolphins can lose their natural wariness, a change that can be fatal. This is something we could already be seeing in Lyme Bay. 'They are also known to have become aggressive in cases and have attacked and injured people.' Liz Sandeman, co-founder of the Marine Connection Charity, warned: 'This is the worst case of a dolphin becoming rapidly habituated to close human interaction in 20 years in the UK, with risks to the safety of the dolphin and people in the water with him likely increasing over time.' The tourists have ignored warnings to stay away from the bottlenose dolphin, who could harm or even kill someone It comes after footage has emerged over the weekend showing ignorant tourists paddling next to Reggie - with young children seen in the water while adults sit on their boards. Crowds of holidaymakers have flocked to the waters in recent weeks for a chance to get close to the dancing dolphin. The new video, posted on Facebook, was captured on Friday evening and shows the animal circling around and swimming dangerously close to humans. One commenter on the video warned the dolphin is probably showing an increased interest in people due to hunger. 'When animals become interested in us it normally means they are hungry and malnourished and in search of food,' they wrote. Another person, who witnessed the tourists crowding around Reggie, wrote: 'We went down last night and watched from the shore. We were shocked to see so many paddleboarders out there (around 20) and they were all following the dolphin and not leaving him alone. 'Yes it's magical for everyone to be up close but seriously have a word with yourselves.' Marine Management Organisation shared concerns for the safety of the sea creatures and urged tourists to stay away from the animals in a recent Facebook post The playful dolphin appeared to dance in the water as it performed for its awestruck audience The dolphin is believed to have arrived in February but from May, the MMO directly observed people intentionally approaching the mammal too closely. Experts and cetacean charities agreed collectively to name the dolphin Reggie, the Mail previously revealed. Bottlenose dolphins are native to Britain and there are estimated to be 700 around the coast, usually swimming in pods. They reach up to 13ft in length and can weigh up to 650kg. Dolphins, along with whales and other porpoises, are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and approaching or recklessly disturbing a dolphin can result in up to six months in prison as well as an unlimited fine. Lucy Babey, director of programmes for UK marine conservation charity ORCA, told the Mail that although dolphins may elicit fun and excitement on the surface, they pose a big risk to humans. She said: 'They are powerful marine mammals and have been known to seriously injure people, even if unintentionally through a thrash of the tail or butting people with their beak. 'In some case the dolphins behaviour has escalated, become erratic and more serious injuries have occurred. There have been incidents around the world where the dolphin's behaviour has escalated to harassment and people have unfortunately been killed. 'Unfortunately these dolphins can become habituated through prolonged human interactions which increases the risk of injury and brings about welfare concerns for the animal. There are several cases where the dolphins sought out boats, associating them with humans, but sadly resulting in propellor injuries and death.'

My relaxing massage left me feeling violated and abused - and what the male masseuse did next will horrify you

A woman who booked a relaxing massage to treat herself says she was violated while on the treatment table, and has now reported her masseuse to police. Rae, from Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, booked a 75-minute Chinese massage at a suburban shopping mall on Saturday when the appointment turned sinister. She said that while she was half-naked, covered in oil and blindfolded by a warm towel, the masseuse began to rub her breasts. He then stunned her by asking her out to dinner while she lay paralysed with fear on the massage table. 'I'm still shaken up,' Rae told the Daily Mail, who didn't want her surname published over concerns for her safety. 'I was physically fine when I left, but mentally I was horrified and disgusted with myself, that my fight response hadn't kicked in. 'I've always thought of myself as a strong woman, and I really struggled with that for the first couple of days after it happened, questioning myself.' Rae initially made her booking after experiencing what she described as 'the best massage I have ever had' at the massage centre two weeks earlier. As she sat in her car minutes later she made a video detailing her ordeal As a bit of a 'luxury', she said she decided to book a second session on Saturday evening but things soon became uncomfortable during her return visit. As she sat in her car minutes later, she made a video detailing her ordeal which she then shared to her TikTok account. 'I just had a massage with a guy that I had a massage with a couple of weeks ago. I am shaking,' she said in the now viral clip. 'This time he didn't tuck the towel around me. And he used a lot more oil. 'At one point his boss left and he said, "My boss has left I can do longer now".' The masseuse then began to remove her underwear, she said. 'Even my undies,' she said. 'They normally roll them down a bit but this time, he rolled them down so my entire butt was out. 'And he just poured so much f***ing oil on me.' Rae said the man also slid his hands much further onto her breasts than he had during the first appointment. 'And before I know it, the towel is down, I'm covered in oil and he is rubbing the oil,' she said. 'He has got a warm towel on my face so I can't see anything. I am pretty much frozen - and at this point he asks me out. 'He said, "Are you going home after this?" and I said, "Yeah" and he goes, "Will you come to dinner with me?" while he is just rubbing [my breasts],' she said. 'And I said, "No!" and he says, "Why not?" and I said, "Actually I'm not comfortable with this". 'So I grabbed the towel and got out of there as quickly as I could.' Rae said she felt vulnerable in the situation. 'I didn't just jump up and bolt which I should have done,' she added. '[But] I'm naked, other than undies, I'm naked and I have to play nice.' She eventually dressed, paid and tried to leave, but said the man attempted to smooth things over with a so-called 'discount'. 'After I got dressed and I paid, I gave him $90 and he gave me like $10 back, said it was a discount and I thought "what, so I don't tell anyone?" 'Then he gave me his mobile number and told me, next time to contact him so he can do me a half-price massage. 'And right now I'm feeling really violated.' The video, which racked up 732,000 views and thousands of comments, saw many urging her to go to the police. 'You have every right to feel violated. You have been sexually assaulted and you should report this to the police if you feel ready,' one user insisted. But others were far less sympathetic, brushing off her ordeal. 'Oh babe, you should be flattered - seriously, that was just a normal massage, you've got nothing to worry about,' one tried to insist. 'Um, you could have said stop,' said another. But Rae says the vile backlash has spurred her on to take the matter further. 'I think that's where I want this to go now,' she said. 'Yes, I want him off the streets, obviously, but more than that I want to create a safe space. 'I want people to understand that you can talk about this, that you didn't ask for it, no matter what my comment section might say.'
