Ahmedabad Rural police seize ambergris worth ₹2.97 crore, two arrested
Acting on a tip-off, the SOG intercepted two suspects near Gibpura village under Sanand police station limits and recovered 2.976 kg of ambergris, said Om Prakash Jat, Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural.
The seized material, confirmed by forest officials and forensic experts, is estimated to be worth ₹2.97 crore in the international market, he said. Along with the ambergris, two mobile phones and ₹700 in cash were also confiscated from the accused.
The arrested men were identified as Yogeshbhai Tulshibhai Makwana (30), a resident of Bhavnagar, and Pantukumaar Bharatbhai Patel (37), a resident of Ahmedabad.
During interrogation, they revealed that the ambergris had been supplied by one Bharatbhai Vallabhbhai Sarvaiya of Bhavnagar and they were looking for buyers due to its high market demand, Mr. Jat said.
'Ambergris trade is banned in India as the sperm whale is a Schedule I species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). This seizure reflects our commitment to curbing illegal wildlife trade,' Mr. Jat said.
The accused have been handed over to the Forest Department, Sanand, which has initiated legal proceedings under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Ambergris, a rare substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, is highly sought after in the international market for its use in perfumes and traditional medicine, despite the global ban on its trade.

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) seized 2.976 kg of ambergris (sperm whale vomit) valued at Rs 2.97 crore in an operation near Sarkhej-Sanand Highway on Saturday. Two suspects were arrested. Police said the action followed a tip-off and was carried out near Gibpura village under Sanand police station limits. The suspects were found carrying ambergris, also known as "floating gold," along with two mobiles worth Rs 2,000 and Rs 700 in cash. The total seizure is valued at Rs 2,97,62,700. Mired in many controversies, Elvish Yadav continues to enjoy immense popularity
Siddharth Elvish Yadav, a popular YouTuber in the Hindi-speaking region of the county who boasts of 1.57 crore subscribers, was again in headlines on Sunday as more than a dozen shots were fired outside his home in Gurgaon's Sector 56. While Bhau gang claimed responsibility for the incident, accusing the YouTuber of promoting betting platforms, an FIR has been launched and the probe in the matter is ongoing, said police. The 27-year-old has been mired in several legal battles in the past, and has even drawn public criticism over many incidents. However, the YouTuber, who won the Season 2 of Bigg Boss OTT 2 in 2023, continues to be immensely popular. The YouTuber has been accused of supplying snake venom for recreational use at rave parties in Noida. Following a complaint by nonprofit People for Animals (PFA), the Noida Police raided a Sector 51 banquet hall on November 3, 2023, seizing nine venomous snakes, including five cobras, and 20 ml of venom. Forensic tests confirmed that cobra and krait venom was found during the searches. Yadav was named in the FIR. He was issued a notice under Section 41 of the CrPC on November 7, 2023. He was arrested on March 17, 2024, under the Wildlife Protection Act, NDPS Act, and IPC Section 120B (criminal conspiracy). He spent 14 days in judicial custody before securing bail. The Enforcement Directorate initiated a money laundering probe against the YouTuber in May 2024. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court stayed trial court proceedings after Yadav's counsel argued that no snakes or narcotics were recovered from him. The case remains pending, with animal activist Saurabh Gupta alleging death threats from Yadav's associates. Yadav was booked by the Gurugram Police in March 2024 for assaulting YouTuber Sagar Thakur (Maxtern) at a shopping mall. A viral video purportedly showed Yadav attacking Thakur who alleged that Yadav tried to 'break his spine' and issued death threats. Yadav claimed Thakur provoked him with threats to 'burn his parents alive' and suggested the incident was staged. An FIR was filed for rioting and criminal intimidation, but Thakur later withdrew the complaint after reconciliation. Last February, a purported video, which was widely shared on social media, captured Yadav slapping a man at a Jaipur restaurant allegedly over derogatory remarks about his family. Yadav justified his actions in an audio clip, claiming provocation. No legal action was reported following the incident. During a podcast with Rajat Dalal earlier this year in February, Yadav made remarks about Bigg Boss 18 finalist Chum Darang, and was accused of mocking her name, ethnicity, and role in Bollywood movie 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'. The comments sparked outrage, with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women condemning him. The National Commission for Women summoned Yadav on April 22. He issued an apology, removed the offensive segment, and claimed his remarks were misconstrued. Yadav posted a vlog in February, claiming that the Rajasthan Police provided him a convoy during a Jaipur visit, showing police vehicles trailing his car. The video, featuring former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas's son, led to allegations of police favouritism. BJP leaders to be questioned regarding Suresh Gopi's suspected leopard tooth pendant
At least two BJP leaders, who were seen accompanying Union Minister Suresh Gopi at Thrissur on the day he wore a chain with a pendant made of a suspected leopard tooth, will be summoned for interrogation. The Pattikkad Range Forest Officer is likely to issue notices to the party leaders to record their statements this week on a complaint filed by a Congress worker A.A. Mohamed Hashim. Mr. Hashim had complained that the act of wearing a leopard tooth, a wildlife trophy, was an offence punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The Forest department had recorded the statements of Mr. Hashim in this regard last month. Mr. Hashim, who shared the news video clips of Mr. Gopi walking along the Swaraj Round wearing the suspected wildlife trophy, had identified one of the accompanying persons as K.K. Aneeshkumar, the Thrissur district president of BJP. Though unable to name the other one, the complainant had said he was an identifiable person. In Kannur too He had indicated that the Minister was seen wearing the ornament made out of suspected leopard tooth at a public function in Kannur too. Mr. Hashim, while giving his statement to the department, wanted the suspected ornament to be seized and its period of manufacture ascertained. Information will be sought from the persons who were seen walking along with Mr. Gopi, on whether they had any idea that he was wearing the ornament made of a wildlife trophy. The possible existence of videos or pictures that would give clues on the material constituting the ornament will be explored, since the videos shared by the complainant are insufficient to prove the allegations, sources said. The investigating officer will decide on questioning Mr. Gopi after looking into the statements of the witnesses and the evidence, they said. Meanwhile, the Pattikkad Range Forest officer recently booked a wildlife crime against a person arrested by the Thrissur police for allegedly possessing suspected narcotic substances the other day. A suspected leopard tooth, ivory and a few strands of elephant tail hair were also recovered from the accused. The suspected wildlife trophies would be sent for analysis to ascertain their genuineness. If confirmed, the accused would be prosecuted under the Wildlife Protection Act, sources said.
