Wydad appoint Benhachem as coach ahead of the Club World Cup
May 24 (Reuters) - Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca announced Mohamed Amine Benhachem as their new coach on Saturday ahead of next month's Club World Cup.
Wydad, who finished third in the most recent season of the Moroccan top flight, will compete in the revamped tournament, which will be held in the United States from June 14 to July 13, in Group G alongside Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain.
Former Wydad player Benhachem, 49, expressed his emotional connection to the club in an interview on the club's YouTube channel.
"My goal is to return to the CAF Champions League and compete for the title. The club's project includes several objectives, the most important of which is competing for titles, and this is what we will strive to achieve in the Club World Cup as well," Benhachem said.
Wydad Casablanca begin their Club World Cup campaign against Man City on June 18.

This is the never-ending season but Chelsea show no sign of wanting to slow down. They intend to embrace Fifa's newly revamped Club World Cup – a potential £97m prize pot for the eventual winners is quite the draw in an age of intense financial scrutiny, after all – and have travelled to the US knowing that the tournament gives them an opportunity to find out more about a squad that has evolved in the short space of time since Enzo Maresca's side beat Real Betis in the Uefa Conference League final on 28 May. There has been little time to pause for breath before Chelsea get up and running in Group D by facing the Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC in Atlanta on Monday. Some players have had a 10-day break, others have been away on international duty and there has been no sign of anyone in the recruitment department taking a bit of annual leave. The sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, have been busy assessing possible ins and outs. Joe Shields, the co-director recruitment of talent, has made his presence felt in the arrival of Liam Delap from Ipswich and the pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The pace is relentless. It speaks volumes that nobody raised an eyebrow at João Félix, who joined from Atlético Madrid for £45m less than a year ego, being left out of Chelsea's 28-man squad last week. The evolution is constant. Chelsea have shown decisiveness in their hunt for a new striker, moving swiftly to land Delap for the bargain price of £30m, while they have been clinical in other areas. They were right not to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent basis, even though sending the winger back to Manchester United triggered a £5m penalty. Refusing to pay over the odds for Gittens and the Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan before the registration deadline for the group stages of the Club World Cup was also encouraging, especially as doing so was always going to be seen by more impatient supporters on social media as some kind of major negotiating fail. It is not as if the business has been limited to Delap. Space has been found in the travelling party for other newcomers – the 19‑year‑old goalkeeper Mike Penders, the 20-year-old centre‑back Mamadou Sarr, the 20-year-old midfielder Dário Essugo and the 21-year-old Brazilian prospect Andrey Santos, who developed well during a year on loan at Strasbourg, Chelsea's partner club. Meanwhile there will be eyes on Palmeiras's progress in Group A given that their 18-year-old winger, Estêvão, is joining Chelsea after the tournament and is seen by many observers as a future Ballon d'Or winner. A late call has also been made for Kendry Páez, the Ecuadorian prospect, to travel to the US to train with his new clubmates before joining Strasbourg on loan. This is a chance for Maresca to finesse patterns, improve old on-pitch relationships and develop some new ones. It is not ideal that Chelsea's Premier League campaign will be compromised if they go all the way in the US – the final is less than a month before the start of the domestic season – but there is no point grumbling about fatigue. The reality is that Chelsea, whose endurance will also be tested by participation in the Champions League, are where they want to be. The club's American owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, are hardly going to complain about involvement in a month-long Stateside marketing extravaganza. Can Chelsea go all the way? Formidable opponents await them in the latter stages but they should make it through Group D with something to spare. LAFC offer the familiarity of the former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and the former Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud but both are past their best. Chelsea surely just need the right attitude. Further games against Espérance and Flamengo in Philadelphia look inviting enough. Yet the limited nature of the opposition will not stop Maresca from learning more about his players. There is scrutiny on the goalkeeping position following the move for Maignan, which did little to quell the impression that Chelsea will listen to offers for Robert Sánchez and Filip Jörgensen. Djordje Petrovic, meanwhile, is certain to leave after asking to be omitted from the squad. The Serbian goalkeeper impressed on loan at Strasbourg last season and wants regular football. Sánchez retains the support of Ben Roberts, the global head of goalkeeping, and did well at the end of last season but whether Maresca fully trusts him is less clear. Chelsea have options. There is a lot of excitement about Penders, who will probably start as the third choice after Marcus Bettinelli's move to Manchester City. The pressure to perform is clear. There is a battle for supremacy in attack. Delap, who scored 12 goals for Ipswich last season, has taken the No 9 shirt and will try to usurp Nicolas Jackson up front. How will Jackson respond? Talk of Chelsea looking to sign another striker raises questions over the Senegal international's future. There are few untouchables at Stamford Bridge. The list of players who can leave is extensive. There are the expensive castoffs who have been left behind and have no future at the club – players such as Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Ben Chilwell and João Félix – and then there are those such as Noni Madueke. The winger was important for Maresca last season but some have misgivings over his development. Estêvão, who plays in Madueke's position, is coming. Geovany Quenda joins from Sporting Lisbon next year. This is the reality at Chelsea. They just keep going; the challenge is to keep up.

Real Madrid have signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool this summer and are now reportedly looking to line up a move for one of his former teammates next summer Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a swoop for another Liverpool star after signing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England international joined Madrid after running down his contract at Anfield, with the LaLiga giants paying £10million to release him from his deal early so he could feature at the Club World Cup. Madrid have signed a number of players in similar situations to Alexander-Arnold in recent years, which has allowed them to avoid shelling out huge transfer fees. The report claims that Konate has 'already started the countdown on his contract' and has rejected Liverpool's latest offer of a new deal, with club chiefs fearing a repeat of the Alexander-Arnold saga. Konate spoke out about his future after Liverpool's final Premier League game last month, admitting he is unsure what will happen. "You know, I just want to say one thing: Everything you saw on social media is completely fake," he said. "I didn't even ask for something from the club. They made me an offer, and I replied to them with something, that is it. The rest (speculation) that I want to wait until the end...I want this, all of it is completely fake. "And even the big journalists said in November I am very close to signing the deal. I was like: 'Ah, they have more information than me!?' Because it was not true at that moment and that is why I was a little bit mad because it was not true at this moment. "I knew at one moment people would think I didn't want to sign the contract but I was never close to signing it. We will see what will happen. First thing, I am very happy because we have won the Premier League trophy and we lifted it today. "We have to enjoy it, have a rest and hopefully next season will be better than this. I didn't expect the [contract] question this way! (laughs) But you are smart, you're smart. To be fair, to win a trophy, even when I won my first trophy with Liverpool, the FA Cup, was just amazing. "And today, to win the Premier League, I know I have a lot of objectives with this club: to become a leader, to win everything. I am very happy here to be fair, you know. But I know where you want to go with this question and this is another conversation with the club and my agent, we will see what will happen in the next few weeks or I don't know when but we will see, let me say that. Enzo Maresca left with huge Chelsea calls ahead of Club World Cup opportunity
Chelsea will represent the Premier League in the FIFA Club World Cup off the back of winning the Europa Conference League and there is plenty of intrigue surrounding Enzo Maresca's side Enzo Maresca has already won a European trophy and booked a place in next season's Champions League. But in reality, Maresca is still only on par. While no-one would admit it publicly, it would have been a failure if Chelsea had not lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and getting back on European football's biggest stage was always the target. And yet the Club World Cup offers not just the incentive of a £97m jackpot for the winners but also a huge opportunity for Chelsea. This could be the tournament which puts them back among the elite and, almost as importantly, gives them a chance to start shaping their future. This is also about what Chelsea can get out of this tournament as a squad. When appointing Maresca last year, the club made it clear they viewed the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons almost as two years rolled into one. Why? The unique nature of the Club World Cup threw up a new challenge but also a big opportunity. They have spent big ahead of the tournament in the United States, adding Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo and Liam Delap and putting them straight into their 28 man squad for the Club World Cup. They spent £30m on Delap and now comes the question over whether he can challenge Nicolas Jackson to be the club's first choice No9. Jackson can be rash, unreliable and temperamental as getting sent off at Newcastle in the run-in proved. But he is also strong, improving and, for Senegal against England, he has shown big potential. Now comes Delap who was sought-after by a string of clubs and it now remains to be seen whether he is good enough to win his place as first choice or provide the sort of competition which Jackson needs to focus his mind. The line-ups in the United States - starting against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta on Monday - should be very revealing about that striker dynamic. Equally, the keeper issue is yet to be resolved. They were so adamant that Robert Sanchez was going to stay No1, had the club's full backing - and yet then went for AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan. They could not get a deal done but may yet revisit it but stressed it was an opportunity which popped up. However, it still reveals that there are doubts over the keeper issue and they do have a young gem in Mike Penders who has been out on loan but is highly-regarded. Chelsea's Filip Jörgensen played the Conference League final but there can be no doubt that a convincing No1 would really improve the whole team and give the team more confidence. What happens in the United States should be really revealing on that front. Quite how far Chelsea go will also shape their plans for next season because they want to give players a break and yet the Premier League starts just five weeks after the Club World Cup final on July 13. That is a dilemma for a lot of clubs and managers. But the worry for Chelsea is that there is an acceptance they have still got ground to make up on Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. But starting as a disadvantage while giving their main rivals a head start is exactly what Chelsea do not need. They must get the balance right between wanting to win but also being recharged and ready for next season. The other fascinating dynamic is that arguably Chelsea's most exciting young signing is playing at the Club World Cup - just not for them. They paid £29m for Estevao Willian who was courted by every big club in Europe. Chelsea landed him but allowed him to stay at Palmeiras for another year and the Brazilian club are in Group A. There will be a lot of excitement about this 18-year-old and it could catch light in the United States. He is so skilful, such a terrific dribbler and is hugely entertaining.
