Union fears high costs delaying farmers' rural broadband
Farmers are being left behind because of the high cost of installing full fibre broadband in rural areas, according to a National Farmers' Union (NFU) representative in Critchlow, the NFU's county advisor, said having a fast and reliable internet connection was increasingly important for farmers but there were pockets of farmers who struggled to get latest figures from the NFU, revealed 34% of its members had full fibre broadband - compared to 57% of properties nationally - in a 2023 said 339,000 homes now already had this form of broadband in Derbyshire and it was working with the government and the county council to reach more properties. Full fibre broadband is where fibre optic cables are used rather than traditional copper phone lines, which means providers need to dig trenches to install them individually to each home or business Critchlow said the cost of this meant some remote properties were missing out."The cost is higher for them (telecoms companies), so installing into one property is no where near as cost effective as when they are doing multiple properties and I think that's why they (remote properties) get dropped off in these schemes," he Locker, 66, who has a farm in Boylestone, near Ashbourne, said he can go an entire day without getting a proper internet connection and believes his access has got worse over the past three years. "I think full fibre is the only option."If they could come and put some full fibre cabling into the farm from the top of the lane and connect the house I will be very happy," he Locker said the amount of online administration work in farming had grown over the years and added he had looked into getting the internet via a satellite but this was too expensive. Understand frustration An Openreach spokesperson said: "Openreach is building full fibre to millions of homes and businesses across the UK, and has already reached more than 339,000 across Derbyshire. "We know there is more work to do, and we understand it's frustrating that this property is not yet included in our build plans. "We continue to work closely with Digital Derbyshire (the council led programme) and UK government on reaching more areas."Across the country, there is a move to get more homes onto full fibre Ofcom spokesperson said the industry was in the process of replacing the traditional telephone network as part of a broader initiative to modernise the UK's telecoms infrastructure and expected all landline calls to be delivered over a broadband connection by January 2027.

PFF picks 'perfect' free agent target for Rams It's hard to see the Los Angeles Rams not come out of the offseason without adding a cornerback. Ahkello Witherspoon is an impending free agent who the Rams will "definitely" talk to about a return and there are a lot of uncertainties around the rest of the group of Darious Williams, Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. Los Angeles has a No. 26 pick in the first-round — a ripe location for a rookie cornerback — or could target a few external free agents to shore up the secondary. One player that Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker believes would be a "perfect" match for the Rams is New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones. The 31-year-old has played all nine of his seasons with the Patriots but is coming off back-to-back years without an interception. Regardless, Locker writes that the Rams could use Jones as a key secondary depth piece in 2025 at a relatively low price because of his experience in Cover 3. In defensive coordinator Chris Shula's first year calling defensive plays, Los Angeles utilized Cover 3 on 30.6% of coverage snaps, exactly double that of the second-highest concept," Locker wrote. "Over the past two seasons, Jones' 77.6 PFF coverage grade on Cover 3-family plays ranks 14th among qualified cornerbacks. "While Jones' 2024 metrics took a hit, he still turned out a 73.5 PFF coverage grade or better in seven games, revealing that there's still potential for him to play at the lofty level he did in 2023. Inking the former Patriot could give the Rams depth and a quick starter as they pursue additional, younger options in the draft." Jones has 11 interceptions, 57 defended passes and 436 combined tackles in 132 career games. He would be an experienced veteran presence in an otherwise young secondary if the Rams don't retain Witherspoon and/or draft a rookie in April.

Cleckheaton firm helps out with new installation for 60,000 love locks
A Cleckheaton-based online retailer has contributed materials for a new installation housing 60,000 love locks. The Metal Store supplied galvanised steel tubes and clamps which were used to build the so-called Love Locker structure at Thornbridge Hall, Derbyshire. The love locks were previously attached to Weir Bridge in Bakewell (which became known as Love Lock Bridge), but were removed by Derbyshire County Council when the bridge needed repairs and maintenance. The council also changed the bridge's design so that no further locks could be added. The 'Save the Love Locks at Bakewell' campaign group asked Thornbridge Hall to relocate the locks to the venue. Emma Harrison, owner of Thornbridge Hall, said: "The Metal Store has excelled in bringing my vision for the Love Locker to life, from supplying the materials to supporting me with any necessary guidance and advice. "The love locks from Weir Bridge in Bakewell mean so much to so many people. "It's fantastic to be able to display these at Thornbridge Hall and allows visitors to either come take a look at their old locks or create new memories by adding one to the display."
