PFF picks 'perfect' free agent target for Rams
It's hard to see the Los Angeles Rams not come out of the offseason without adding a cornerback.
Ahkello Witherspoon is an impending free agent who the Rams will "definitely" talk to about a return and there are a lot of uncertainties around the rest of the group of Darious Williams, Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. Los Angeles has a No. 26 pick in the first-round — a ripe location for a rookie cornerback — or could target a few external free agents to shore up the secondary.
One player that Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker believes would be a "perfect" match for the Rams is New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones. The 31-year-old has played all nine of his seasons with the Patriots but is coming off back-to-back years without an interception. Regardless, Locker writes that the Rams could use Jones as a key secondary depth piece in 2025 at a relatively low price because of his experience in Cover 3.
In defensive coordinator Chris Shula's first year calling defensive plays, Los Angeles utilized Cover 3 on 30.6% of coverage snaps, exactly double that of the second-highest concept," Locker wrote. "Over the past two seasons, Jones' 77.6 PFF coverage grade on Cover 3-family plays ranks 14th among qualified cornerbacks.
"While Jones' 2024 metrics took a hit, he still turned out a 73.5 PFF coverage grade or better in seven games, revealing that there's still potential for him to play at the lofty level he did in 2023. Inking the former Patriot could give the Rams depth and a quick starter as they pursue additional, younger options in the draft."
Jones has 11 interceptions, 57 defended passes and 436 combined tackles in 132 career games. He would be an experienced veteran presence in an otherwise young secondary if the Rams don't retain Witherspoon and/or draft a rookie in April.

Should the Rams have drafted this edge rusher instead in 2011?

Should the Rams have drafted this edge rusher instead in 2011? The Los Angeles Rams drafted edge rusher Robert Quinn with the No. 14 overall pick in 2011. And while he enjoyed a solid seven years with the team before playing his final five years elsewhere, Quinn wasn't the best player the Rams could have taken at that point in the draft. Pro Football Focus recently re-drafted the 2011 draft to determine which players should have gone where. For the Rams, they picked edge rusher Justin Houston with the No. 14. Houston ended up going 56 picks later to the Kansas City Chiefs., "Quinn was certainly a worthy selection here and will hear his name called very soon in this redraft, but Houston enjoyed a slightly better career," PFF wrote. "The four-time Pro Bowler boasted a career 91.0 PFF overall grade, and his 22 sacks in 2014 are tied for the fourth most in NFL history." Quinn went with the next pick to the Miami Dolphins. So while the decision to add Quinn wasn't a bad one, Houston objectively had a better career than him. Quinn finished his NFL career with 102 sacks, 62.5 of which were with the Rams. He also made three Pro Bowls and one All-Pro. Houston, meanwhile, tallied 112 sacks and made four Pro Bowls and one All-Pro. Sadly, Quinn was the only good player from that class for the Rams. The only other picks who lasted more than a season were tight ends Lance Kendricks and receivers Austin Pettis and Greg Salas. While Kendricks had a OK career with the team, none of them really panned out.

Jacksonville Jaguars sign P Logan Cooke to four-year contract extension

Jacksonville Jaguars sign P Logan Cooke to four-year contract extension The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Monday that they've signed punter Logan Cooke to an extension. Ahead of minicamp starting on Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Monday that they've signed punter Logan Cooke to an extension. On Cooke's original deal, he was entering the final year of his contract and was set to be a free agent in 2026. The team announced that this is a four-year extension, which will keep Cooke in Jacksonville through the 2029 season. Cooke is coming off a 2024 season where he was named to his first Pro Bowl, along with being named a second-team All-Pro. On the year, Cooke averaged almost 50 yards per punt attempt, and his net average of 44.8 yards per punt was the second-best in the NFL. By PFF's tracking data, Cooke was also in the top five in punts downed inside the 20-yard line and had just three touchbacks the entire year. Cooke was 12th among punters in return rate as well, with he and the Jaguars' punt coverage unit as a whole limiting opportunities for opponents. Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw takes issue with Cardinals' pregame antics before start

Los Angeles Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw hurled a gem against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday as the team picked up a 7-3 victory. The veteran pitcher went five innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven. He only threw 82 pitches and picked up the first winning decision of the year. Kershaw expressed after the game he was a bit upset with the Cardinals going into the matchup. The Cardinals played Matt Adams' clutch home run off Kershaw in the 2014 National League Division Series on a loop before the game began at Busch Stadium. It wasn't Kershaw's finest moment for the Dodgers but the team playing the moment from more than 10 years ago appeared to irk the pitcher. "I think it's a little bush league, but I don't expect anything less from these guys. So, it's no worries," he told Kershaw was the National League MVP and Cy Young Award winner during the 2014 season. More than 10 years later, he's still going strong for the Dodgers though the expectations are a bit different. He's started five games this season for the Dodgers and has a 4.35 ERA with 15 strikeouts. He was last an All-Star in 2023. He missed most of the 2024 season with various injuries. Los Angeles improved to 39-27 with the win over St. Louis. The defending World Series champions a game ahead of the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants in the National League West division.
