Free music festival at St James Quarter this August

St James Quarter Sessions
is coming back for the third time from 15 to 24 August.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe at St James Quarter includes more than 60 acts performing in the canopied development, including the Level 6 rooftop, which has panoramic views of the city, on one of the most unique festival stages.
Hot on the heels of the band's 30th anniversary tour, 90s icons The Brand New Heavies, will be bringing acid-jazz hits such as 'You Are The Universe' and 'Midnight At The Oasis' to Edinburgh. Fans can expect a stacked set of classic tunes, heavy bass lines and hypnotic rhythms from one of the band's that helped to establish acid-jazz in popular culture in the 90s.
Winner of the Scottish Music Awards' Sound of Scotland award and previously BBC Introducing's Scottish Act of the Year, Glasgow rapper Bemz will begin this year's main event with a Friday night performance on the Level 6 Castle View stage. Having toured with the likes of The Snuts, Bemz has been building a reputation as a leading light in Scotland's hip-hop scene.
Fresh from making her Glastonbury debut this year, Cortney Dixon is poised to set the rooftop on fire with a set of indie-pop anthems. Expect fuzz laden guitars and a raucous performance from the North East's latest hot property.

Grassroots music body Wide Days will be taking over the Castle View stage with their New From Scotland series, showcasing Scotland's hottest new talent. Festival-goers can enjoy the industry's top picks of future Scottish stars on Friday 22 August before they reach the masses.
Scheduled to appear on the Level 3 Yellow Stage and hailing from Cromarty, critically acclaimed Highlands singer songwriter, Tamzene will bring her unique sound to Sessions. She will deliver an intimate set of R&B‑tinged pop ballads set to mesmerise festival goers with candid lyricism and haunting melodies that draw on a nuanced mix of Irish, Jamaican and Highland roots.
Nigerian-born and Edinburgh-raised, James Emmanuel will also be performing his soulful sounds on the Yellow Stage on Level 3 of the Galleria. Raised as the son of a preacher, he first found his voice in gospel choirs, a grounding that shaped his soulful sound from the beginning. Now backed by BBC Introducing, James draws inspiration from legends like Marvin Gaye and Bobby 'Blue' Bland, James brings a timeless quality to stories that feel deeply personal and human.
After their first headline tour since releasing their debut album in 2024, Scottish duo The Laurettes will be bringing their unique take on Celtic-folk to the Sessions stage, supported by their all-female band.
The Laurettes
Elsewhere on the bill Dara Dubh, Beth Miller, Ant Thomaz, Indoor Foxes, Dictator, Justine Beverley and more home‑grown talent will perform on other stages throughout St James Quarter.

Festival-goers can sign up for free tickets, set times and stage information by downloading the St James Quarter App, which allows everyone to stay updated with events happening throughout the destination for Sessions and beyond.
Susan Hewlett, Festival Creator at St James Quarter, said: 'At a time when festival ticket prices have never been higher and independent venues are closing across the country, we're not only putting on this incredible line-up for free, but also giving existing and emerging artists the platform to continue being heard and discovered. We've even got clean toilets, no mud, and food and drink venues on tap – what more could you ask from a free music festival in one of the best cities in the UK.'
The warm-up to this year's St James Quarter Sessions will champion Edinburgh's rich grassroots music scene by offering the next generation of Scottish stars a series of pop-up busking performances appearing throughout the destination.
Running throughout August, musicians can apply for a paid performance slot with applications on www.stjamesquarter.com

Donald Trump opens new golf course at Aberdeenshire resort

The US president teed off at the New Course in Menie in front of a crowd including golfers, the Scottish First Minister and the Scottish Labour leader. Trump also made reference to late James Bond actor Sir Sean Connery's reported support for his golf resort – even attempting to recreate the actor's voice. Just before hitting the first ball at the New Course, the US president told those gathered on a grandstand: 'We started with a beautiful piece of land, but we made it much more beautiful. 'The area has really welcomed us. If you remember at the beginning there wasn't quite a welcome, but it wasn't bad. 'But with time they liked us more and more, now they love us and we love them.' Trump added: 'I look forward to playing it today. 'We'll play it very quickly and then I go back to DC and we put out fires all over the world.' At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the president thanked his son Eric for his role in creating the new 18-hole course, adding: 'This has been an unbelievable development. 'The land, they said it couldn't get zoned, it was an impossibility. 'And Sean Connery said, 'Let the bloody bloke build his golf course'. 'Once he said that everything came into line. (First Minister) John (Swinney) and I were talking about that last night.' Construction of the new course in Menie began in 2023, with Trump and his son Eric breaking ground on the project. Trump International Scotland claims the two courses will be the 'greatest 36 holes in golf'. Critics say the Trump developments in Scotland have not delivered as many jobs as promised and work at the Menie site has caused environmental damage. Members of the media watched the opening ceremony from a grandstand, with music played beforehand including Roxanne, Thriller, and Surfin' USA, plus music by the Script and Elvis. The president has already played several rounds of golf during his Scottish trip, teeing off at his other resort in Turnberry, South Ayrshire, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Lewis Capaldi says drummer was in ‘floods of tears' at secret Glastonbury set

The 28-year-old performed a 35-minute surprise performance on the Pyramid stage, having taken a two-year break from performing after his last appearance at the Somerset festival, and revealed he had to leak his own secret set after he was worried people would not turn up. Capaldi said: 'I'm not great at keeping secrets, I wanted it to be a surprise, but we had to start leaking it out a couple of weeks before because it would have been strange to come out to an empty field. 'By that weekend it was the worst-kept secret. It was genuinely the best day of my life, I loved every moment of it. 'Almost immediately, I was overcome with emotion and I started to well up, so I was like, 'get it together', but then I turned around and looked at my drummer, and he was in floods of tears. 'It was weird, I knew it was going to be fine this time around. I had nerves and butterflies, but it wasn't the same as 2023 when I was so stressed and I knew something bad was going to happen. It was spectacular.' Capaldi was speaking as part of the launch of Apple Music's Music That Soothes Me series of curated playlists, with the singer himself putting together a track list including the likes of Fontaines DC, Lana Del Rey and The 1975. The series, which features music intended to help listeners relax and unwind, also features playlists curated by Renee Rapp and Bring Me The Horizon. Speaking about how he relaxes, the Scottish singer said: 'I use music in meditation a lot – ambient music, not what I usually listen to. But when I'm going to bed, I'll listen to a lot of green noise and rain noises, especially when I'm trying to get to sleep, to soothe me. 'Slowing down and being outside helps, I like meditation, and I also go to therapy, which has really helped me with stress. 'I'm not someone who enjoys going for long walks or spending a ton of time outside, but I force myself to do it these days because the effect it has on my mood and my stress levels is just mind-blowing. 'I think for a long time I was either working or going to the pub, and these days I spend a lot more time with friends in a way that isn't just going out. 'Doing wholesome things with friends is always a nice change. Get outside, go to therapy, do some meditation and hang out with people.' The singer says he plays the 'older' work of rapper Eminem and his own demos to relax, joking that the latter 'really knocks me out'. Capaldi recently said he had the 'most incredible, surreal feeling' after his 17-date UK and Ireland comeback tour sold out. During the 2025 Glastonbury show, Capaldi performed his new track Survive, which has since gone to number one on the singles chart, and ended his performance with Someone You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled with his Tourette symptoms in 2023. Tourette syndrome causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure, treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website. Prior to the festival slot, the Glaswegian star performed a number of secret gigs and guest appearances, saying in an interview with online therapy platform BetterHelp that he felt a 'rush of adrenaline' before managing to calm himself before his first warm-up gig in Edinburgh. Capaldi has had six UK number one singles, including Before You Go, Pointless and Wish You The Best. He has also seen both of his studio albums reach number one in the UK albums chart.
