BSF constable guns down senior after argument in Murshidabad

Behrampore: A BSF constable fatally shot his senior following a heated argument at their camp in Murshidabad's Dhuliyan municipality on Saturday night. Around 10.30pm, constable Shubham Kumar Mishra fired 13 rounds from his service rifle at head constable Ratan Singh Shekhawat (56). The two were stationed at a mango orchard in Paharghati, under Shamsherganj police station, as part of 119 Battalion, following clashes in April. According to BSF sources, the altercation began when Shekhawat allegedly raised issues about Mishra's family. The situation escalated, leading Mishra to put his INSAS rifle in burst mode and fire repeatedly at his senior. BSF officers rushed Shekhawat to Anupnagar block primary health centre, from where he was referred to Jangipur Super Speciality Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Shekhawat, who joined BSF in 1989 and hailed from Jaipur, is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. Mishra, a resident of Chhattisgarh, was immediately apprehended and his weapon seized. On Sunday morning, BSF authorities handed him over to the local police. Jangipur SP Amit Kumar Shaw said they were seeking police remand of the accused for further investigation. BSF constable shot dead by colleague during quarrel in Bengal's Murshidabad

Berhampore: A 55-year-old border security force (BSF) constable was shot dead by a 29-year-old colleague during a quarrel late on Saturday night at Samserganj in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. The accused was taken into custody, police said. The deceased, identified as Ratan Lal Singh, was a resident of Rajasthan. He was declared dead on arrival at the Jangipur sub-divisional hospital, where he was shifted after doctors at a local hospital failed to stop the bleeding. The police said that the accused, Shivam Kumar Mishra from Chhattisgarh, fired 13 rounds from his service rifle. Several of the bullets hit Singh in the abdominal area. The BSF informed the police, and Mishra was taken into custody by the Samserganj police station in the early hours of Sunday. 'The accused and the deceased were on duty when the incident happened. Other information will be provided by the Samserganj police station,' BSF's South Bengal Frontier spokesperson N. K. Pandey said, refusing to comment on the incident any further. The police said that Mishra, who joined the BSF four years ago, used to report to Singh. 'BSF personnel from the 119th battalion were patrolling the Paharghati area. Investigation shows that Singh and Mishra had a quarrel over the latter being refused leave to visit his pregnant wife. Mishra flicked the burst mode lever of his rifle and opened fire,' an officer from the Jangipur police division said. Based on a complaint lodged by the BSF authorities against Mishra, an FIR was registered under charges of murder of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). 'Mishra was produced before the Jangipur court on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody,' the officer said. Samserganj is one of the areas under the Jangipur police division where violence broke out in April during protests against the newly enforced Waqf (Amendment) Act. Central paramilitary forces, including the BSF's 119th battalion, who were deployed after three people were killed in the violence, are still patrolling various parts of Jangipur under orders from the Calcutta high court.

Tej Pratap Yadav faces probe for entering Kashi Vishwanath temple's restricted ‘Red Zone'

Tej Pratap Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad's son, has courted controversy over a visit to the Kashi Vishwanath temple Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, where he allegedly stepped inside the restricted 'Red Zone'. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple administration has ordered an investigation over a video circulating on social media purportedly showing the former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple's restricted 'Red Zone', according to a news agency PTI report. The red zone, where mobile phones are not permitted, refers to the area within the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor that also includes the temple premises. The video showing Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple premises is doing rounds on social media since Thursday, officials said. Kashi Vishwanath CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said that the temple administration recently got to know of the video through social media platforms and various newspapers. The temple administration said information has been shared with the CRPF and the local police, which are responsible for the temple's security. "Information has been sent to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take action against the responsible personnel of the concerned agency," PTI quoted Mishra. "Both agencies have been requested to ensure strict adherence to the prescribed rules and guidelines within the temple premises. Their investigation will also verify the authenticity of the content circulated on social media and identify any personnel found to be at fault. If any violation of rules is found at any level, appropriate legal action against the concerned individuals, " Mishra added. Tej Pratap had hit headlines a few weeks ago as well when RJD president expelled him from the party, besides declaring that he "shall have nothing to do with the family", after a photo of him with a woman went viral. The move came on May 25, a day after Tej Pratap Yadav's Facebook post announced that he was "in a relationship for 12 years" with a woman, despite being married and his divorce petition still pending before a family court here. He, however, deleted the post a few hours later, claiming on X that his Facebook page was "hacked."
