NHTSA Issues Urgent Brake Failure Warning for Certain Volvo EVs and PHEVs, Crash Video Illustrates

Yahoo17-07-2025
Volvo issued a recall about a month ago for 11,469 vehicles that could experience a complete brake failure due to a brake module software defect. Today, the NHTSA released an 'urgent brake failure warning' to those with affected vehicles.
Of the 11,469 Volvo vehicles included, the NHTSA says approximately 1000 still need the recall work completed. Thankfully, said 'work' is as simple as downloading an over-the-air update to the vehicle. A wide range of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles make up the models impacted:
2023 C40
2025 EC40
2025-2026 EX40
2023-2024 XC40 EV
2023-2025 S60 PHEV
2025 S90 PHEV
2024-2025 V60 PHEV
2022-2026 XC60 PHEV
2020-2026 XC90 PHEV
The recall documents state that if an EV is in one-pedal drive mode, or a PHEV is in 'B' mode, coasting downhill for at least 1 minute and 40 seconds could result in a total loss of braking functionality. An owner captured the problem occurring on a dashcam, and the NHTSA posted the video. You'll notice the vehicle quickly begin to gain speed moving downhill at about the 1:35 mark. The driver was on a narrow, downhill road, and they eventually gained enough speed that it carried them up onto a steep shoulder. The car then crashed into a berm and finally came to a stop on the road.
For those who haven't downloaded the recall update yet, NHTSA advises you turn off one-pedal drive in EVs and 'B' mode in PHEVs. Volvo says to refrain from driving the vehicle until the update is complete. You should be able to download the update via the infotainment system, but Volvo says to contact your local dealership should you have any questions or require further assistance.

BYD's July production falls 0.9% y/y as expansion spree slows

BEIJING (Reuters) -BYD's vehicle production fell 0.9% in July from a year earlier, ending a 16-month growth streak that has catapulted the Chinese automaker into the world's largest electric vehicle maker. BYD made 317,892 EVs and plug-in hybrids globally last month, down 0.9% in its first decline in more than a year, while sales edged up 0.6% to 344,296 vehicles, slowing sharply from a 12% increase in June, according to a monthly filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange. The company last saw shrinking production in February 2024, in line with an industry-wide fall due to the timing of China's Lunar New Year holiday which fell in February versus January in the prior year. Sales contracted in February 2024 as well. BYD, which is the biggest Chinese rival to Tesla, saw both production and sales hit record highs in the fourth quarter of 2024 before trending down this year. With electric car sales accounting for 41% of its more than 4 million vehicle sales last year, BYD has overtaken the U.S. EV specialist as the world's top EV seller. BYD, engaged in a bruising price war in the world's largest auto market, has slowed its production pace in recent months by reducing shifts at some factories in China and delayed plans to add new production lines, Reuters reported in June.

Android Auto now plays nicely with your phone's color scheme

Adamya Sharma / Android Authority TL;DR Google is fixing the previous issues with wallpaper-based theming on Android Auto. With this update, base palettes in Android Auto sync more seamlessly with your phone. The update is currently in beta, but some people have also started seeing it in the stable version, suggesting a gradual rollout. Since the official launch of Android 16's stable version, Google has been refreshing many apps with its new 'Expressive' design language. Meanwhile, Android Auto, the app that receives far fewer glimpses, and mostly brief ones, is now adopting Google's older and more prevalent theming style with Material You. With this update, the colors in the Android Auto interface on your car's head unit will now match the wallpaper on your Android phone. While Google first started testing Material You theming for Android Auto last year, there were some issues with color consistency, and it supported only limited colors. However, 9to5Google recently noted that these limitations appear to have been fixed with the latest 14.9 beta update of Android Auto, allowing the interface to sync correctly with the colors on your Android device. The colors now apply consistently to different elements, and are most evident on the Settings app when you access them from within the car. The colors automatically also refresh when you change the wallpaper, aligning with the color scheme on your phone. While 9to5Google spotted these changes on the latest beta version, a few people also reported seeing the splash of colors on their cars' units with the stable version, suggesting Google may have begun rolling it out.
