Two teenagers arrested after manhunt over fatal hit and run in Leeds

Metro17-05-2025
A 19-year-old pedestrian is dead, and two other teenagers have been arrested after a hit-and-run in Leeds.
Around 10 pm yesterday evening, a red Ford Focus turned onto the ring road in Beeston Park when it struck a man who was walking near Leeds Urban Bike Path.
The suspects fled from the scene. Emergency services attended, but the teenager passed away at the roadside.
West Yorkshire Police have now arrested two males aged 15 and 19 on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The Ford Focus involved has been recovered by officers as the investigation into the accident continues.
The Major Collision and Enquiry Team (MCET) are seeking witnesses to the incident and would like to speak to anyone who saw or has dashcam footage.
Officer James Entwistle said: 'A substantial number of enquiries remain ongoing today into this very serious collision, which has tragically resulted in the death of a young male.
'We are supporting his family and continue to hold two males in custody following their arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
'We are actively appealing for information and footage to assist the investigation and would like to speak to anyone who has CCTV, dashcam or phone footage of the collision, or of the car involved, just before it took place.' More Trending
Earlier this year, a similar hit-and-run saw two other teenagers arrested for the death of a woman near a school in north London.
The pair, aged 18 and 19, were detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.
The woman in her 60s was knocked down on Grahame Park Way in Colindale by a car that police said had been trying to evade officers.
The crash was witnessed by children and parents heading to and from the nearby primary and secondary schools during pick-up time.

Illegal cigarettes and vapes worth £67K seized in Huddersfield

Illegal cigarettes and vapes worth more than £67,000 have been seized by officers in Huddersfield. A joint operation saw West Yorkshire Police and Trading Standards visit seven stores in the area on Tuesday. They included two retailers in Ashbrow, three in the town centre and two elsewhere in Huddersfield. According to the force, 2,050 packets of cigarettes, 168 packets of 50g tobacco, 2,030 oversize vapes and 604 unlicensed single use vapes were seized in total. The operation was part of a series of initiatives to tackle sources of finance for organised crime in Huddersfield and prosecute people involved in activity such as drug September 2024 and July 2025, officers have made 85 arrests, executed 15 warrants, and seized an estimated £230,000 worth of Class A and B drugs, the force said. Ch Insp Rebecca Calpin said: "A substantial amount of work has been ongoing across Kirklees this year to combat organised crime, and these latest warrants are just one part of that work."It is proven that money raised from illegal vape and tobacco sales can be used to fund organised crime and these illegal products can also be more harmful to public health."The vapes can contain higher nicotine content and are not regulated or tested, making them potentially hazardous, especially to young people."She added it was important these sources of money were taken away from those "who create misery in our communities".
